Double Bass Strings Comparison (Evah Pirazzi vs. D'Addario Helicore Hybrid)

Here's a quick comparison between a set of Pirastro Evah Pirazzi's (Light gauge, approx. 4 months old.....still 'alive') and a brand-new set of D'Addario Helicore Hybrid strings (light).
Evah Pirazzi:
1:21 - Full range, pizzicato
2:00 - 'Perdido', pizzicato performance sample
2:39 - Arco
D'Addario Helicore Hybrid:
3:45 - Full range, pizzicato
5:09 - 'Chi Chi', pizzicato performance sample
5:58 - Arco

I just ordered these strings for my double bass but i got heavy tension for a change, hopfully my bass wont sound tinny anymore

I enjoy them! Especially on my plywood Shen bass. The Eva's didn't have enough tone for my setup, although they felt great on the fingers and under the bow. Best of luck, and thanks for the comment!

Hi Jonathan - thanks for doing this comparison. I have a Shen SB100 with Zyex strings and I find them hard to bow so I was thinking of replacing them, possibly with Helicore hybrids. I've played Helicores and they definitely seem easier to start than the Zyex, but in your recording here I think the Evah Pirazzi's have a little mellower tone. Just curious - which model Shen do you have?

Hi Dave, please forgive the late reply.
I also have an SB100. I'd agree with your assessment. I found the Evah's to be mellower indeed, and also easier to bow. That said, in my experience, the Evah's leave something to be desired from behind the bass. They lack the clarity in pitch that I need to feel confident in my intonation. They sound great recorded, though.

They certainly lose some of that fresh string brightness but they remain pretty bright compared to other strings in my experience.

Thank you! Hm, if I'm happy with the setup, I don't change them very often. I've had some sets of strings on for years, and others for only a few months. Depends on how they sound on my bass. The search never ends lol!
