Thanks for watching! We are glad you enjoyed this video. For an easy way to get the zipper pulls on the tape, we recommend the Zipper Jig. You can find it here: sallietomato.com/products/gypsy-quilter-zipper-jig
Not all brands do come with the ends with out coils to help get started. But it's still possible. I've been doing it for over 40 years now. And so obsessed with the wonderful colors of tapes and coils both available not to mention matching colored pulls too. I find often as not if I press the two tapes down on a hard surface like a table top and use one finger to hold them together and tight to the surface the pull is easier to pull on. This works if there's no start end like shown here too or that it's been cut off by you too in haste to make a zipper forgetting you need to move the pulls to the other end and then cut off your zipper sized for your project. There are tools that may or may not always help and videos on TH-cam to make tools out of old forks and towel holders. Todate I have such items and have never used these tools. I always seem to get it done fine. I'm also amazed at people who repeatedly cut off the tape to size and sew individual sides of the zipper to their project and voila like magic I see them pull the zipper pull on and all is aligned perfectly edges of fabric to edges of fabric and zipper too? I have never tried that but always plan to just haven't. Don't panic and don't get too frustrated when you first try zipper by the yard. It's a kind of knack that develops I believe with time. And since the tapes vary in quality and pulls might too some tapes are easy like Sallie Tomato's and others a little more challenging. I love zippers by the yard.

What happens if I put the pulls in the opposite direction? I actually want the bottom of my coat to be able to open while the top remains closed. I think it should work. Have you tried this?
The zipper pulls would both come off the bottom of the tape whenever you took the coat off, since you would have to zip them off the ends in order to make that work. That is a neat brain puzzle to try and figure out, though! I think I had a coat that could do that when I was a kid, but I can't remember what the bottom of the zipper looked like.
If you didn't mind the look, you could probably get a separating zipper (with the plastic or metal pieces at the ends that you thread the pulls onto) and simply turn it upside down. Then you would be able to have the neck always closed and be able to remove it from the bottom.
Great video!!!!!! Unfortunately I don't have the first part of the zipper doesn't have fabric tapes on both ends?

very helpful, ive always bought these double zippers online, i didnt realise how easy they were to make yourself
I put all my pulls on first before cutting any of them. It is so easy with the thread on the end.

Thank you for this video. What foot do you have on your machine in this video? It looks like one I need. Very slim!!
It is a very narrow foot that we sell.
