A fundamental thing we all desire is dignity in life. The right to choose to end it on our terms before the ability to choose is gone is naturally a part of that.

My mother had MS. In her last year she suffered and completely lost who she was. She kept having infections that ravaged her body. She begged me not to revive her if she had another infection. I let the doctor know and we let her go. I’m sure had she had the chance, she would’ve had the option to go sooner without the humiliation and loss of dignity. I still have vivid memories of her suffering even in her death.

@@cinhofilms I respectfully disagree. My mother had the best private care possible, we even had a live in nurse for her, and still, she had no dignity. I won’t go into details of what she went through, but her last year was horrific.

From the perspective of someone from Belgium where we allow euthanasia for people with intolerable suffering including children, the fact that even this proposal which relates to assisted dying for people with only six months to live, monitored by two doctors as well as a judge, might not pass is insane and outrageous.

    • @benjones3466

We in the UK generally find it harder to talk about issues around death than our European neighbours. For most of my life a discussion like the one in this video would have been very difficult to have in public. Attitudes have been slowly changing and I believe the majority of people support this bill, but the political class is always slower to catch up to public opinion.

    • @blueknight0604

Belgium takes it way too far. People with suicidal depression are allowed to seek euthanasia. You think you solve one problem, in reality, your enabling a far worse one.

This is a fantastic bit of journalism. All completely rational, throughly researched questions framed in a sincere way. The sensitivity of the topic was handled really well on both sides. And Kim expressed her point incredibly well. I was always in support of this bill but really cleared up some concerns and will undoubtedly give others lots to think about. Excellent interview.

We have assisted dying here in Belgium and it works fine. We had all these conversations years ago and again fear factor was spread around but in the end with strict guidelines we see this as a benefit.

It all sounds wonderful that there will be extra training for doctors and access to psychiatrists and other professionals, but where does this fit in to an already stretched NHS which can't even adequately meet its current obligations?

    • @stuartallenphotos
      @stuartallenphotos วันที่ผ่านมา

You believe the extra training will work? Please tell me you're not that naive? Doctors already have training for DNR's which they ignore. They still set them up behind peoples backs without telling them. They still do not follow the rules. They ignore the rules which means they should be reviewed each time you go into hospital and they lie in the medical notes to cover their back at times.

Re. the burden terminology, I would be inclined to consider turning it round and allow a patient to say "my life is a burden to me, please help me to end it". I have worked in the NHS all my life and am now a retired GP. I have seen many patients for whom that would apply but couldn't offer any help 😢

What she has said about burden in this interview is very disturbing because 54% of people who choose assisted dying in Oregon in 2021, which the British bill is based on, said they felt they were a burden. The Labour MP Rachael Maskel was correct to criticise Kim Leadbeater comments “The subtleties of societal coercion are not grasped in these comments, where someone can believe that not to opt for an assisted death is a selfish act. This is especially so in a society where assisted suicide is normalised, often described as a ‘duty to die’”.

Anybody trying to stop this bill is guilty of projecting their own views on others in a most disgraceful way. In my view it doesn't go nearly far enough but it is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately advancements in medical abilities have gone beyond prolonging life in certain cases and have moved into the realms of prolonging suffering.

Dad needed an Ambulance to take him 1 mile from the hospital to the helipad
a clot in his neck needed to be removed, 8 hours later one arrived by then Dad had gone blind
they told us he would be dead within 4-5 hours, 48 hrs later he was still fighting for every breath
Imagine a fish out of water, The damage to his brain was horrendous. But something was keeping him going the nurses were begging him to let go, We buried him 2 days before Christmas
and owing to the delays with Covid his inquest is taking place just a few days before they break for this christmas, the lasting image is a man vomiting and gas escaping from his mouth,
My condition is now Terminal I have a DNR in place, and EVERY single night we keep going over and over his death, I am lucky if I get 2 hours sleep. Dogs are given more dignity than humans
If a situation arises like my father they deserve better than being allowed to suffer like that,
the 92 page report into the failings that lead to this make for horrific reading.

Allowing people the right to choose to go out on their terms rather than linger through unneccessary suffering, degradation and trauma to their loved ones is caring for each other.
You should not have the right to demand that those you don't know struggle on for however long it takes their illness to finally take them, just for your own comfort of mind. What you're asking for is not love, it's selfishness.
