thanks sooo fuckin much man, I haven't taken your advise to the full extent as I use (prussian, alizaarin, and phalo green) occasionally, but for the most part, mixing earth tones, greys, chromatic blacks and you name it has really developed me so I just wanted to revisit this video to tell you how grateful I am!! I didn;t even notice your tone being loud btw man, keep it up!
I haven't even read the comments because people are a-holes. lol. But I have to say I never thought you sounded like you had any kind of tone except "PASSIONATE" ! This was a quick, informative, and easy refresher for a newbie or those of us getting back into painting after a 20-year hiatus. Thank you. I'm heading to watch and absorb all your passion. :) :) :)
Am a beginner. I was so confuse about all the colors but I feel better now about I can make so many colors with those three primary colors red, blue and yellow. Been painting for only one month, just trying to keep it simple, you r correct 50 r even 100 painting with primary colors makes so many colors.
my comment continues here. I bought myself a color wheel and couldn't get the colors I wanted and with this simple formula I'm getting this once and for all. Thank you so much and God bless you.
I love this video. You say "Make 50 to 100 paintings before adding more colors!". This should be taught at primary school. In fact, I believe that only primary colors should be allowed at school for the first few years so everybody would be able to REALLY understand the power of these three colors. But like in every subject they bombard us with too many detailed facts, so we lose track of the basic knowledge. Having good and stable basics is the key to be able to build a substantial knowledge in maths, physics, chemistry, geography, history, languages, art etc. Because the school system is like it is many people finish school after so many years of learning and can`t point out a certain country on the map. They can`t even determine historical eras. And this video is a wonderful example of how things should be taught!!! Thank you very much!
Neal Lockhart I learned something of great value to me from this presentation. It`s up to me to get it to his level, maybe come to your conclusion and then maybe take it to the next level. I am thankful for every inspiration I get for free. I`m not trying to become a Master of Mixing Colors. We all have different needs. You obviously are on an advanced level when color-mixing is concerned which I am not. I have mainly been working with pencils, black inks and grey tones.
I'm not a painter at all. I came here trying to learn more about color mixing, and I'm so glad I did ! I definitely feel like I have a better understanding of how different tints & hues are achieved ! The rest is up to the individual and their preferences, or "eye" ! Thank you very much for creating this video !
Best Best Best video ever ! I have never written a review nor have I made a comment on anything, until now . I don’t know if you read these but if you do I just wanted to thank you so much for the way you have explained, demonstrated & simplified the color process ! I have been struggling with this whole concept for months! You have made me realize Its not complicated! Not at all !! Not even kinda ! It’s so simple, IF you keep it simple ! I am very new to painting and this is thee BEST and most informative thing I have read / watched. Again, , I just wanted to say thank you for the insight , I am wow’ed !
My daughter loves to paint and she goes to a local paint class that just lets them paint draw and merry which is great but I wanted her to understand the color wheel and mixing colors which i have no clue of!! This is super simple and now we can learn together. She's my Picasso! Thanks for the K.I.S.S method...new subscriber!
Thank you from a 60 year old beginner who knows nothing about colour. Now I do not need to go out and buy loads of different tubes of colour, with time and patience I can learn to make my own colours. My own colours will be part of the fun and enjoyment of the art that I hope to create. Many thanks. Peter
you no what , this is the only time I have really understood why we should only start with a limited pallet . you kept it simple and it makes sense more importantly it works , thanks for your help and time , I will be putting this to good use as I never even knew what a neutral was before this amazing .
That's awesome :) Glad it was helpful for you. I think it makes a lot of sense to start simple and then build upon that foundation. Just like a house. And I think super beginners at painting should start with just black and white - kind of like drawing with paint. Then move to the limited palette with color. Have fun!
I have just started painting in the last 5-6 months, so I am an infant! I just finished watching this video and I really appreciated how easy you made it for me to understand how to mix colors. Very well done...and thanks!!
Been painting 30 years. I do not suggest limiting yourself in terms of pigments but finding out what each pigment is good for. Each fills a need. You may not need a certain pigment for the effect you desire, but keep an open mind about which colors you choose and research them for their effects. And 50 paintings? I should be so rich.
Alexandra A and Decron, I think he said to do so many of them to make sure you get used to actually mixing the various colors, and, to have you mix *other" shades such as aqua and brown. Plus, I feel like he was just exaggerating on the number of paintings - to try and bring a bit of humor in this video so it would help you to relax when you paint. 😊
@@curtriceennis2924 Actually I was wondering how you darken your colors, particularly to get an umber. Do you use black as well as white to darken your colors? LOVED the info, so important for someone who s a determined aspiring artist! I watch other videos where the artists go so fast I can't tell how they got there! Thank you.
This is the first time i have actually seen someone teach from basics. This is very good for beginners. I am going to practice colour mixing everyday before i pick up my brush to paint.
Watching your explanation on color theory and mixing neutrals just gave me a 💡moment. I've been painting for about 5 years, mostly mixed media, and I recently decided to get truly acquainted with my watercolors, sticking with various shades of the color wheel, some earth pigments, and a couple of convenience colors. I've been doing nothing but color mixing, no painting, both watercolors and acrylics. I'm going back to basics. One of my biggest struggle areas is working with light and shadows, which requires lots of various neutrals whether using acrylic or watercolor. I somehow get lost and struggle with which primary to add when I've been mixing a particular neutral. But after watching this I "got it" !!!! ( and I've watched many great tutorials here on TH-cam) I've had milestone "aha" moment. I'm anxious to pull my paints out!!! Thanks for sharing this!!!! 👍🏼🙏🏼
I agree with keeping a simple palette specially if you are a student on a budget. For oil paints however it's a bit more difficult because the colors are made from minerals that often have other colors unlike acrylic which is synthetic more often a pure color. This is why if you dont have good or pure primaries in oil paints you might get muddy colors.
Great video and I appreciate the no bs directive. I’ve worked in digital graphics and printing for 10+ years and I am an idiot when it comes to mixing colors. This is great help.
This may be the best video I've ever seen explaining how to mix colors and values with a basic palette. I think I'll give it a try! Color has always been a problem for me, and an area of my work that I'm sort of afraid to work on, because I'm color blind. I have difficulty telling how warm or cool colors, highlights, and shadows are. Greens and purples especially are the bane of my existence.
thank you thank you. your tutorial was the answer to my constant struggling with the color wheel and i can't thank you enough. when i added your site to my bookmarks i wrote "KEEPER" to remind me not to ever delete. now will watch the #02 video. again, many thanks for your simplification for people like me.
Thank you so very much for simplifying something that I have been struggling with as a senior beginner. I appreciate your comments also about allowing and learning from your mistakes. Basic lessons we teach our children but totally forget ourselves. Saying things in terms that anyone could understand and learn from eg. Start small, don't get bogged to with too many choices of paints and brushes when we haven't learnt how to use the basics. Thank you so much.
Yeah I don't know what some of these people are talking about as a beginner it feels less overwhelming to simply start off with the basics the base structure and work your way up that's how you learn anything else this shouldn't be any different thank you for putting out this video very helpful :)
For the very first time, the colour wheel and the neutrals ALL MADE SENSE TO ME...FINALLY! Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I am literally just starting out in art and I was so confused. The colour theory information was just too intense...some of it made sense but after a while my head started to ache...too much information but not enough simplicity. So once again, thank you so much for your clear information. Finally someone who helped me get it! YAY!
I'm new to painting. And new to color theory and the basics. The color wheel etc. So I am learning how to paint and about colors by watching YT videos. Yours are up there in my favorites. And I have subscribed. I like your style. And I like your artwork. The Landscapes are so natural looking. It's the kind of art I would like to achieve one day. I love nature. Excellent tutorial! I mean, EXCELLENT!!!!! Too bad some people are so biased and closed minded! For those moaners and whiners who claim to have been painting for a thousand years and are SO "perfect," what the hell are you doing here anyways, if you are not a beginner?!?!?!?!?! Oh! I forgot! To bash and insult an artist who is MUCH MORE SKILLED THAN YOU!!!!! I detect a whole lot of jealosy here! Mr. Shaefer, thank you SO VERY MUCH for another SUPERB instructional video! You are a true professional! And although you are a highly skilled artist, you remain so humble and you are always kind enough to share your expertise with all your your eager viewers! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for *all* this information on mixing colors. And, yes this helps A LOT!!! I do appreciate your taking the time to post this video ... It has *really* answered SO many questions for me!!! Thank you, again, and, God Bless You and Yours. 😊
Best color mixing tutorial out there..some reason I always get it with your explanation..like the one and two point perspective..I read books over and over and my brain just couldn't get it..I requested for you to do a video on it and thanks for that..I got it...thanks Brandon for all that you do.
I think having a good grasp, leading towards an expert understanding of colour theory is excellent and the way to start. I think everyone needs to do the scholastic as well as the artistic. The best reason for buying premade colours is not to ignore 5 years of punishment but to make it easier and to give the painter a consistent reliable result.
I really like this video. It takes primaries and mixing to the very basic level. I have been told about neutrals (I'm a new painter) but it was all gobbledygook so having a visual made it all fall into place. Thank you
Fantastic Tutorial! You've instantly taken the mystery out of color mixing for me! Not only that, but saving me tons of money by not buying all of those extra tubes of paint! Again, sensational video!
Thank you for taking the time to explain how to use the primary colors and how to mix. I’m just starting to paint and I will definitely try using only the primary colors it makes sense. Thank you!
I’m experienced with all the colors now but when I started I didn’t know crap and I was overwhelmed by all of the tubes that were in my kit for my painting class in college and I messed up on all of our master studies because I did not know how to mix and what to mix. So I’m glad this is here. This is a good video and I’m definitely going to make 50 paintings with this palette
Great video. Very educational and easy to understand. You have a unique way if presenting information in a "matter-of-fact' style. I am smeone with no art background, who desperately wants to try painting, but I haven't lifted a brush because I don't hae a clue what to d with it or how to even start. I'll definitely watch more of your videos to help me figure it out. Thanks and great job!
This was a very good video in explaining what neutral colors are and how to mix them. I like the way you went over and over the same thing to drum it in which really helped. I played the video at 1.5 speed and that worked well!
I'm studying how to mix color because I repair leather and imitation leather furniture and the toughest part is matching the color. Thanks, I have four years of art, two of painting, and thought I understood how to mix colors until I needed to make a cream color. I found a video that showed me that it is white, with a little yellow and brown mixed in. Your video shows me how to mix brown if I don't have a brown. Thanks for the refresher!
I wish i listen to you the first time I saw this video, then i would learn how this works, instead of strugling with all kind of other colortubes. I see that very clearly now :) I will start again :) I cant draw and hardly paint, but still learning the mystery of painting :) You have many times give me insperation. The best place i can be is in a gallery of paintings, as i was in Berlin on holiday in mai :) Keep up the good job, you are marvelous !
I've been struggling and searching how to make color charts with acrylics....this is fantastic....I have been making it all so difficult....thank you for breaking it down to how simple it really is....nice job.....I am a beginner :)
I am a grandmother who entertains an elementary grandchild. Her art teacher (third grade) doesn't go this far. I bought some washable paints made by crayola and we ran out of yellow and brown. We are painting a turkey and needed brown. You helped me SO MUCH! I bought a new set of ten colors and didn't check the contents. No brown. So, we are now going to make our own brown. Just know how much you just encouraged me! This indeed may make a turning point in enjoying painting for her.
This video was very helpful! I have been painting 4years with oils ! I want to also paint with acrylics! Wished i had this teaching when iI first started! Thanks again!
Kiss! Keep it simple stupid! Wonderful video for beginners like myself. Easy to understand very informative and excellent ideas. I will do 50 paintings as recommended for me to thoroughly absorb and understand and for it to become second nature. Thanks ever so much.
A very insightful video. I got back into scale modelling about a year ago and I love playing with colors. I am a hairy stick painter and at times I used to get confused on how to achieve camouflage colors coz there are thousands of shades of camos. The concept of neutrals and earth tones helped me alot. Made things easier for me. Thanks
Thank you. I’m new at this and have bought every color out there. I find it very frustrating as a new painter with all the colors. This makes so much more sense. I’ve been trying to mix all these other colors together to make colors and getting mud.
I'm a beginning painter. I used to be involved in more "active" arts, such as theatre, etc. Now, disabled, I am limited. I'm attacking drawing and painting. Your videos are so helpful.
Informative and straightforward, though it is worth mentioning that the choice of primary hues is important too. As there are no pure primaries in pigment, I use two each of the primaries, each with a bias towards the other two primaries ...so looking on the colour wheel, Ultramarine, for example, has a red bias and Cerulean has a yellow bias...Cadmium Red = yellow bias, Alizarin Crimson = blue bias and Cadmium yellow = red bias and Lemon yellow = blue bias. And so depending on whether a brighter or a muted neutral is required, the more appropriate primaries can be selected from the outset. i.e. Alizarin crimson and Lemon yellow produces a muted orange, on account of the two pigments having a bias towards blue, which, being the complimentary of orange, would naturally help produce a muted orange. And so with that muted orange mixed, more blue could be added to further neutralise it. By using six primaries and white, a greater range of potential hues can be mixed. But on the subject of this tutorial coming across as being preachy and making uncomfortable viewing...a joke right? Honestly, some people need to get out more. Here's an idea...how about parking all childish insecurities at the door and concentrating on the subject in hand? As my dear old mum used to say, "If you've got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all." A decent watch.
Excellent video and explanation. It's funny how people think red, blue and yellow is a limited pallette when you can make pretty much any colour your want if you try. I'm working on a grid colour chart made with the paints I have ... I know there's more colours available to me .... just haven't found them yet! Although I have way more colours than red, blue and yellow, I appreciate the need to understand colour mixing and how not knowing about colour mixing can lead to disappointing results. Keep up the great work and sharing with us.
This is brilliant information for me as a beginner. I've bought every colour under the sun, and I've been becoming very frustrated at my palette being over crowded. I'll be doing this from now on. Thanks
+Khaos Crazed - Yeah you're right.. learning to mix colors won't help beginners with painting... what a joke. Plus, it's my channel and videos, I'll be demanding if I wish. Read all the comments on this video of how it helped beginners.
+SchaeferArt Ok I am going to stick with your idea and advice about use those colors for 50 paintins. I am a new painter. I want to learn this as much as I can.
This is the first time I’ve been able to really grasp the color wheel, neutrals and mixing! Thank you! I’m going to check out your color theory series 🎉
Brandon, Thank you so very much for this video and all of your tutorials. I disagree, learning to mix colors is VERY helpful to a beginner. Thanks for taking some of the confusion out of mixing and especially stressing the need for practice and not needing to buy every color. Learning to trust my own color eye and allowing myself to create color will be beneficial as I create and paint. I'm only about 1 month in so I am very much a beginner.:) ~Shannon
I did not understand why I could not get mixing colors. I thought I was dumb, and couldn't understand why I couldn't get this, and also shadows. I am a beginner, painting for a year now and I still have difficulty. On top of that I get scared that I'm going to mess up my canvas. Lord I just want to get this, and paint beautiful pictures. And how come I can't think of my own ideas? I must say though I have learned more from TH-cam than I ever did in college. You guys on TH-cam are so good at what you do. Thanks for sharing.
Brendan, I look forward to your videos immensely. This one was different. I really liked how you've grown. Your tone was perfect for this teaching video and for students who are struggling with mixing the primary colours. I am so fortunate to have just retired and can paint every day. I study every day different styles and keep coming back to you. Thank you for all you do. Please come to Canada sometime and paint with me. I would enjoy learning and working with you. Best regards, Linda in Paris Ontario. ( my husband is cool with this). Lol
I get mixed up with colour value , and neutrals so this is very helpfull for me many thanks for taking the time to demonstrate this it will improve my own work now .
wow you made this sound really easy to understand, thank you. I am in the first few months of painting and I've watched two of your videos so far and they're really good and informative.
i learnt soooooo much from this vid!!! i never knew that all the paints i needed was actually white, blue, red, and yellow like wth thanks for this vid
“DUH” how did I not know this? Oh right, I’m a total beginner, got a color wheel but didn’t know how to use it. THANK YOU! I love the simplicity of your presentation. Where do I subscribe to your series?
This is the kind of talk beginners need.... Too many of these channels claim to be for beginners and throw so many techniques at you that I get overwhelmed and quit 🙁
I am glad you tried to help beginners with this. I was hoping for more, but I learned stuff my art teacher TRIED to help me with, but I didn't understand. can you try to tell me what red, blue, and yellow equals anyone? Your channel is very cool and helpful, so when I subscribed, I watched a couple of videos and realized how bad of an artist I am 😂! That means your really good. Do you think that you could make another video with more tips and stuff of how to mix more colors? That would be helpful. Thanks for reading, I hope you can reply and do it.
The reason why you would use magenta, cyan and yellow is because those colors are neutral. So for example cadmium red has a yellow undertone (it is kind of orange-ish) and that‘s why you don‘t get a vibrant purple. The same for ultramarine blue. It has a slight red tone in it and if you mix ultramarine with yellow you will receive a rather muddy green. I bought magenta, cyan and yellow and I‘m super happy with it and my paintings turn out very saturated and vibrant in terms of colors. Hope this is kind of understandable.
Thanks to everyone watching and commenting, I never thought this video would get so many views. I was very passionate when making this video so please excuse the tone I had, haha! Hope you find it useful.

You have a unique way of teaching without overwhelming. Never stop being you. Fantastic1
This is the best color theory video I have seen. Thank you for creating it.....Doug Farrell
Thank you
This was very helpful. After using so many different colors, not knowing really what compliments the other, this has clarified so much. Mahlao
Fantastic Tutorial! You've instantly taken the mystery out of color mixing for me!
Not only that, but saving me tons of money by not buying all of those extra tubes of paint!
Again, sensational video!
From the bottom of my heart, thank you! This is really informative and helps to get a good and uncomplicated for a true beginner like myself
Thank you for taking the time to explain how to use the primary colors and how to mix. I’m just starting to paint and I will definitely try using only the primary colors it makes sense. Thank you!
Excellent video. I've been painting for many years and you certainly presented this well.
This is awesome bc I always worried I would spend big bucks buying all these colors but now I can paint with just a few colors. Helpful
Thank you so much for this excellent lesson. I am 72 and have just started and this really helps a lot. 😊
Glad it helped you in some way :) Any questions moving forward, just let me know. Hope your journey goes well!
This was a very good video in explaining what neutral colors are and how to mix them. I like the way you went over and over the same thing to drum it in which really helped. I played the video at 1.5 speed and that worked well!
Thanks for watching! Glad you found it helpful 😊
as a beginner, the tutorial aspect of this video was very helpful. thank you so much!
As a beginner I appreciate your perspective on color, the power is in the sharing. Thanks.
Thank you, glad you understand.
Glad to hear :) Hope it goes well!
Thank You , I've watch 100 videos, and You just gabe Me the best advice I've gotten yet , Im merging from pencil scetch to acrilic 👍🏼
Glad I could help!
Defining moments of painting come from your tutorials. Thank you for your time.
Awesome video. Just starting out and the color mixing is really difficult, but this is the simplified technique that I needed. Thanks.
Have been painting a long time just for my pleasure. Loved this colour mixing, wished I had seen it years ago. Thank you
Glad to hear :) hope the painting goes well
I've been struggling and searching how to make color charts with acrylics....this is fantastic....I have been making it all so difficult....thank you for breaking it down to how simple it really is....nice job.....I am a beginner :)
Thank you Thank you Thank you
After many years you are the 1st person to explain this to me so I could understand it 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Best video on understanding color theory. I don't think I'll only use those colors, but I think this helps explain color theroy more. Thanks
Man, I am way late to this video, and I've just started painting. This is a great demo; clear, concise and quick. Thanks very much!
I feel like a damn 5th grader right now . I literally said “he just made brown” out loud smh
This was so helpful. Thanks for explaining the versatility of Primary Colours in a very simple way
Good stuff. Love the “rude” tone! Ignore the haters and simpletons. Will take your advice and use a limited pallet. Keep it up.
This is SO helpful for beginners!! Thank you so much. I feel more confident mixing colors after watching your video!
People who can't see the brilliance of these basics that are rarely explained, should just leave the site! This is a Eureka Moment!
Awesome to hear 😊 have fun with it.
Thankyou so much a clear and unfussy way to understand colour mixing. I needed this . looking forward to any other videos .
Glad it was helpful!
This video was very helpful! I have been painting 4years with oils ! I want to also paint with acrylics! Wished i had this teaching when iI first started! Thanks again!
Excellent. Wish I had seen this years ago. Great technique always comes from fundamentals.
+Stephen Rapp Very true! Glad it was helpful to you.
I have been watching many videos, but I keep coming back to yours. Thanks!
I always hear painters talk about being careful or you'll make mud. Didn't really understand how to avoid that issue. But now I do. Thanks!
Glad to hear :) It's simpler than you think.
Thanks
+Sherbir Singh No problem :)
Yeah... I needed to see this... The rusts, the browns, the moss colours... Thank you.. 🎨
One of the best tutorials i´ve seen about colors. Many thanks for creating it! Salutes from Huelva (Spain).
Sorry to hear that, but I hope you find drawing and painting fun :) Enjoy it!
Rookie here, very helpful as I am just beginning to learn...Thanks!
Well said and I agree completely!
GREAT ADVICE!!!! I am brand new to painting and will definitely take your advice! Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks
Its definitely a good starting place :) Slowly add more convenience colors over time - like yellow ochre, etc..
Schaeferart I certainly will. I've subbed man. Really like your no nonsense indtructions.👍🏻👍🏻
SchaeferArt Where I live, the only blues available are ultramarine blue and phthalo blue, so which one should I use?

Very nice demonstration.Logical and easy to follow.
This is the first time I’ve been able to really grasp the color wheel, neutrals and mixing! Thank you! I’m going to check out your color theory series 🎉
Glad to hear. Hope it goes well 😊
I'm new to using Acrylic paints and your lesson on color theory was very helpful.
This video is very helpful! Now I’ll buy the main colors only, As a beginner i understood alot from this thank you!
Brandon,
Thank you so very much for this video and all of your tutorials.
Hey Brandon you're pretty good at this teaching stuff. Wish I had teachers in grade school with your mindset. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words. Hope it goes well 😊 have fun.
Genial and simple color mixing tutorial. Thank you!...and Peace to you too!
Lol
+Linda RUDYK Thanks for the comment :) I would love to eventually!
Great video. Just started painting and this was the best lesson I’ve had. You made it very simple. Thanks!
I get mixed up with colour value , and neutrals so this is very helpfull for me many thanks for taking the time to demonstrate this it will improve my own work now .
This is the only video I learnt something new from.
wow you made this sound really easy to understand, thank you. I am in the first few months of painting and I've watched two of your videos so far and they're really good and informative.
Skys life That was my goal, simplicity. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care.
:)
i learnt soooooo much from this vid!!! i never knew that all the paints i needed was actually white, blue, red, and yellow like wth thanks for this vid
Excellent video. Thank you. Am a beginner and this is the best explanation I have seen. Thank you.
“DUH” how did I not know this? Oh right, I’m a total beginner, got a color wheel but didn’t know how to use it. THANK YOU! I love the simplicity of your presentation. Where do I subscribe to your series?
Great teacher. Thank you for making this so accessible.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is the kind of talk beginners need....
Too many of these channels claim to be for beginners and throw so many techniques at you that I get overwhelmed and quit 🙁
Glad it was helpful :) Don't quit!
Im gonna go paint some olives. Or maybe eat some... (Thank you for this, some three years later)
A WONDERFUL tutorial. This beginner says Thank you.
