Good job presenting the car and the model’s history. Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth certainly made the most out of that platform. My dad bought the Chrysler Fifth Avenue variant in the mid 80’s. I remember going to the Dodge dealer in the early 70’s and drooling over all the performance cars. They had a Demon 340 in a bright orange on the showroom floor that was a people magnet

This started life as a six cylinder car with the VIN for the win: L for Dart, L for Low price class, 29 for two door sport hardtop, C for 225 Slant Six with one barrel, aka "Leaning Tower of Power", 2 for 1972 model year, B for Hamtramck, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence.
The Hamtramck, MI plant operated from 1911 to 1980 and today's GM Hamtramck, MI assembly plant is partially on the old Chrysler site. It was a city within a city and was also called "Factory Zero" or "Dodge Main".

While in Vietnam I special ordered a 72 Dodge Demon 340. It was gold leaf metallic with black buckets and the fresh air hood like the one in this video. I had mine with automatic and 3:55 posi and was able to turn 14.4 @ 100 mph at the track bone stock. I could eat GTO's and Chevelles all day long! I wish I still had it.

    71 Demon 340's had the twin scoop hood as a option. The snorkel scoop was available in 72. I owned a new 71 and my buddy had a 72. I currently still own a 71 Demon 340 4speed with 14 300 original miles. I've had 2 Demon 340's and 1 Duster 340, 1971. Always had a 340 Mopar car since 1971.

The Duster and the Demon shared the basic body design but where the Duster was more Valiant - like, the Demon was more Dart - like. They didn't share the front end or even the tail lights, a nice touch that made each of them more distinctive.

I bought a '71 Demon 340/4 speed/3.55 Sure Grip in 1982. It was black with the same white side stripe and a black bucket seat interior. It ran really well. It was all original, but of course it was only 11 years old at the time. There was zero rust on it and for a Missouri car that was rare even way back then. How much did they cost back then? $400. My dad got mad at me and sold it in 1985. I hope it still survives but chances are it was used up and recycled.

I had a new ‘72 chocolate brown Demon with the devil decal when I was in college. Ran great, easy to service and very reliable and quick. It was super but the body had the worst paint job which faded quickly and rusted like crazy. Trunk leaked and had rot in several years. It served its purpose. Nice design and horrendous body quality.

I had a '72 Demon 340/4-speed in like 2004. Fun car! I traded it and a REAL nice old Winchester shotgun and 1,200 bucks for a 327/4-speed '67 Chevy II 2-door post. It wasn't stock, I don't think the Demon was, either, but both would RUN. Both digested most Mustangs and Camaros without problem, the Demon with the A833, the Nova had a Tremec 5-speed (and 4-wheel discs), I have to say the Dodge shifted better. That 4-speed was tough to beat.

back in the day my friend had a 70 demon it was almost all factory stock with a few exceptions. it was butternut yellow with a black interior . 440 magnum with a hemi box 4 speed and a 538 posi rear. he would put a 100 dollar bill on the dash and nobody could grab it as he rowed the gears. if you could grab that benjamin you could keep it!! he was class champion at EVERY track on the west coast five years in a row. i think it had two 4 barrel carbs ( limited production and very rare) He was related to an executive at Chrysler and had more latitude to check off all of the right boxes. Anyways his father died and when his mother was remarried to a southern Baptist minister he was forced to sell it because of the demon decals on his car. the congregation at the Church held a protest in the parking lot when he attended Sunday service!! he was undefeated in that bad boy!!! he put at least 10 car lengths on a blown 454 vette with a 300 shot of nos. Great memories tho. wish he still had it now so he could show his taillights to the new redeye chargers challengers and mustangs!!!!! not to mention the electric cars.

Since my grandpa was a MOPAR salesman from 1946-1979 I remember a couple of them sitting on his lot unsold as we live in Georgia {in the town where Dukes of Hazzard was filmed} & christian conservatives were all in a PMS rage over the name Demon & unfortunately my grandpa was a member of the biggest southern baptist church & he wouldnt even sell them because the congregation gave him so much sh*t about them & threatened to kick him out of the church! I never knew what actually happened to those cars but I sure would have taken both had I been old enough to drive at that time ✌💖☮

    • @markg7030

I bought my '73 Duster from the original buyer a prototypical tech geek who special ordered it in with the following options : Manual front disc brakes, limited slip differential, fold down rear seat, in Pee Yellow. ( I don't believe that was the original Chrysler name for the color) Otherwise all base, 198 six, three on the tree. He wanted factory air but wouldn't pop for what had to be the nominal cost upgrade to the 225 six, which Chrysler wisely required for that option. So to make a long post longer, he had an aftermarket AC installed. You could go 65mph or you could have AC but not both. Eventually I had to have the radiator recored with the thickest core possible at our cherished hippie radiator shop. He looked at my tanks and judged that what we needed was a 3 row core replacement from a '54 DeSoto. I looked at him with a look that said "And just where in the hell are we gonna' find a replacement core for a '54 DeSoto?!" He disappeared into back of his shop for a few minutes and returned with a dusty old cardboard box with a great big smile on his face. I guess he had been wanting that out of his inventory for quite awhile, and I no longer had to drive the car with the heat on full blast on all Summer long.
