Great tutorial -- thank you. I would recommended switching the button display in options to use PKSHD etc instead of gamepad buttons so that your guides can be a little more platform agnostic when looking at the input history on the side of the screen.
Came to comment the same thing. This was a super helpful guide for me learning characters beyond my main. Great video. But platform agnostic button display is much better. Not just because we all play on different platforms but we have our own button layouts. I’ve always got HS on R1 and Dust on Circle for example.
yo this helped me allot, very good explanation of what to look for and what buttens are good in what scenario. Most helpful guide i've seen till now, i have finally fun with the game and don't feel like i have no idea what to do.
Just got the game a few days ago when it was on sale and my goodness, just following your guide on neutral alone got me a good win streak and a better grasp of the game. Still working on consistently implementing advantage, but I can't thank you enough. I'm really enjoying the game now that I can go toe to toe in most online matches. Cheers, man.
Thank you very much for the guide!! Giovanna's playstyle really clicked with me and with the help of the guide I feel very confident and comfortable in getting better. For the first time in the many fighting games I've played I feel like I have a real gameplan with her that I can also execute. Usually there's some discrepancy between what I want to do and what I can do and in panic I often resort to mashing but Gio just works for me!
Thanks! I recently picked her as my first main and turns out she is pretty good actually (i followed the competitive game but never played it) so understanding her gameplay and learning some combos is pretty nice to start 🔥🔥
I main Giovanna. Only play her in fact and you are the best. On top of that, you are motivated and you teach well !! I thank you for making me improve in this realllly good fighting game !
thank you havent played a fighting game since tekken 3 in the cici's pizza on the arcade machines back in the day (im old i know lol) hitbox is coming in today im excited to learn this game
Great video, super informative. Trying to inject some fun into the game after months of strictly playing Millia. Looking forward to getting on and playing some Gio! Dog kicks for days.
Awesome guide! I have a question that I use 5s-2hs-214k-5k-214k combo usually, but I can't block 7frame DPs when I do safe jump setup using 5s-jump-instant air dash. Is there any solution? 5k is not that consistent after the combo I use.
I'm Playing with my friend today he play May and I play Giovanna and he just 60-3 me. I can't reach to him can't even throw and c.s or 5H after his dolphin he always back dash after that follow with dash 5K always lose to him and I can't fight with May in the air. I playing like I can't see the way to win and he just said "You sucks in TH-cam May always getting bullied by Giovanna." but I can't find any matchup that he talk about. And yes I'm still playing it and still losing to my friend all of my friends in discord just wait he to 100-0 me some day. :| Ps.Sorry for my English
May is Giovanna's worst match up after ramlethal. There's nothing she can do. Specials, normals, combos everything May is always a better character. This is coming from a former celestial. You just have to be a better player. If you want to get good at her, i suggest you master her safe jump setup. This alone will make you way better.
Faced the same situation. But I lose on any character to even my zero skill friends. I've practised some missions, played some matches online versus 60lv players. I'm still losing, but this helps. I just want to say, that you're not alone and this is OK. But yeah, kinda tough for first time.
I'm not that good but I do have some potential advice. You've probably figured it out as you've been playing GG longer than me but I've come from other fighting games sooo: 1. Don't try to punish after his H donphin as he's +5 on block. If you know he's going to do it you can 6p him out of the move.(works on reaction too) 2. Since you're losing in the air get into the habbit of pressing back to block while you're in the air so you don't get hit if he does a move (do hold back/block even while you're doing a move and you can still be safe at times) but bear in mind air throws are an option. 3. If you know he's going to back dash after his c.s or 5H you can also dash forward or possibly do a Trovão as even if he blocks it you're pretty much plus. (don't do this too much as he can 6p you out of Trovão). If he's still in range of your 2D that might also be an option and you can cover that with septura (if close enough and quick enough May can punish septura with her 4 frame 5p so pay attention to whether or not he does this consistently) 4. If he's the type of player that mashes buttons while you're doing a block string then leave small Gaps that will result in a counter hit. If he respects your strings then you go for a throw or a dash throw (sometimes you can alternate between a dash throw and dash c.s to be a bit less predictable). 5. If you're still having issues in the air then stop jumping. Gio has a really good anti air (Sol Nascente) and it will hit him if he tries to land on you with a move (unless he does a safe jump setup or something). You can also do this as a wake after he knocks you down but just bear in mind that May can use her Dust in the air to keep herself in the air longer so watch out for that delay 6. Don't run away too much, try to remain close enough that you can bait out attacks with your fast dashes and you can punish with your 5H as it's quick and reaches pretty far. Running away just gives him control of the stage and puts you in the corner 7. Respect his strings. May can loop into her donphin a ton and sometimes it's best to just sit and block then wait for an opportunity instead of mashing buttons and getting counter hit. Use faultless defence to both push her back and avoid chip damage, this might result on you being able to punish sooner as well but be patient. 8. Don't ask him advice or those in your discord as it appears they view you as a punching bag if their response to you saying you don't know what to do is them just saying you suck because they see many Gio's on YT beat May. He doesn't seem to want to help you but since May gets beat a ton on YT you could also watch those videos to see what those people do in the matchup
I'm buying this game today....im not very good at fighting games but the current game I play ranked is gbvs. I main Seox so is Giovanna a good transition character? I've never played a GG game.
@@Akaraien I'm playing through story right now, almost died in the tutorial lmao. I took her into training mode for like 5 min before story and she feels nice and fast. Would it be worth it to do the missions because I'm still trying to figure out what the buttons all do. Seems R1 is multi function for throws and a slam attack
you can google it for a better explanation but it is universal fighting game notation for your moves. each position the joystick can be in is given a number 1-9 like a numpad so 2 would be down + k and 5 k would be neutral (no directional input) + k. k,h,s, and d plus some others are the non-platform specific letters given to your buttons as they have different labels depending on if you're using an xbox, playstation, or fight stick controller. basically the whole system is so that you could tell a player to use 236k and no matter what platform/input they are using they would know what move you mean. :D
Is this guide still relevant after the universal changes to aerial attacks and dash? I am still gonna watch, but just wondering if anything is obsolete now
@@Akaraien I’m still having trouble with option selects tho, like I want to do the big boi counter hit combo on CS but it’s so fast I can’t really confirm into the instant jump HS. The combo I’m referring to isn’t mentioned in this video since it’s only possible post update, but I’m wondering if you know what the optimal solution is. Maybe my reaction speed just isn’t that great and it’s totally possible for most ppl to see the CH and then do jump HS
I think he uses D pad. I don't know anyone who plays GG with analog but play with what you can personally get the most accurate inputs with. (that being said the analogs on modern controllers aren't very durable so if you can avoid using them in certain games then you should)

Happy to help hope your Gio becomes GODLIKE :)
I'm a new player and this guide is amazing. Thank you for explaining her neutral so well, I was struggling with how to safely get close.
Glad it helped!
Exactly. Like I learnt her combos and so whenever I got in my pressure game was fantastic and terrifying. But nuetral was rough. This helped a lot
