I love the advice here. I have heard so many times "just keep writing...you need to write 100s of bad songs to get to a good song." Personally, I felt like I should be spending time trying to make a song I though was good, great, and not just write a bunch of bad songs, hoping to become better. Its refreshing to hear "spend the time to make the song great."

Yes! It's definitely a balance. Spending way too much time on an idea that will never go the distance is a bad thing as well, so there's definitely a sweet spot.

@@claymillsmusic I like the phrase "idea that will never go the distance" as opposed to a "bad song." Its a much better and concise way of describing something that is not commercially viable.

Funny Marty mentioned it. I worked with a live sound engineer once for a country artist. The artist was constantly complaining about the thinness of her vocal, it was never good enough, never full like she imagined it should be. So we changed the channel, tried different compressors even a back up desk. After night 5 of this, the engineer says to her " look ****, crap in, crap out.

Really appreciate this topic. For the last half year or so I’ve been goin on a daily bike ride where I actively listen to music for an hour or two. I try to listen to each song twice to really hear what they’re doin and how they’re accomplishing it. I had an English teacher in middle school who told me ‘A book isn’t meant to be read, it’s meant to be re-read.’ I feel the same way about songs. And yeah, I’ve found it to be super inspiring in terms of my own writing.
