It was nice. Nice editing. Very nice location, what a sight. I would like to know what the low-light situation is like when recording at 30 vs 60 fps in 1080p/4K? From experience there can be quite a big difference in light/brightness of the footage.
As someone who went to school for Digital Filmmaking I think what annoys me about these "cinema quality" phones is that it makes people think filmmaking and photography is not a skill. I've actually had a client ask me why I couldn't just shoot her engagement photos on her phone that way she didn't have to pay me as much... They also tend to think that a good camera makes a good photographer/videographer and disregard the art of lighting, color grading, sound design composition ect. Just my 2 cents. Great review as always Chris!
Going back between the real pro camera and the iPhone, makes you realize that phone camera quality still has a lot to go. I would love to see a ProRes clip color graded properly from the iPhone.
The limitation isn’t really the phone camera itself, it’s the lens. There’s just no way to get true pro quality images with these tiny lenses. They can be REALLY good, but it’s still not pro level thanks to the tiny lenses. The glass alone on my Sony weighs more than my whole phone. The glass matters a lot.
It is crazy how good these devices are. As a professional photographer, I am having to competing with these phones more and more often. Social media pros and customers do not care about what I do as much as the actual content they upload. It is the true reality of technology.
I was conflicted upgrading considering I already had the 12 Pro and honestly it utterly and absolutely kicks ass at shooting in all conditions and I was hesitant that the 13 is better enough to warrant investing in less than one year in a new iPhone, but just as you said, it’s your main camera I feel looking back on photos 20 years from now, I’ll appreciate having the best possible quality I can get. Even if it is minor.
Chris, this is one of the best iPhone reviews I’ve seen. Super practical and fun! And I agree with your price justification. People forget just how much an iPhone does. It’s a supercomputer and an amazing stills and video camera in your pocket!
The pigeon slow mo was awesome! Way to improvise and show off how good that looked. I’ve been using my 13 Pro Max since yesterday and I’m loving this phone. Pro Motion is amazing and the camera is really good. For someone who is an amateur photographer using a Canon R5, the quality that comes out of this phone is really quite impressive and it’s good to know when I don’t have my gear with me I can still get great quality photos. Extremely happy with my purchase.
I had some trouble getting set-up with the iPhone, so I was without a phone for about an hour -- it really made me realize how reliant we are on those devices; I couldn't pre-order food to pick-up, I couldn't breeze through the grocery store checkout with Apple Pay, and I didn't have access to Maps driving a relatively new route (traveled further to pickup the iPhone). That makes it worth the price of the technology; having condensed so many productivity tools into one device.
Using the quote "The best camera is the one you have on you" to justify buying the newest iphone because it has a better camera is kinda missing the point of that quote.
I appreciate that you clearly marked what footage was captured by the iPhone, unlike some other reviewers who mix footage from the device (iPhone) they are reviewing with the footage they are using to capture the video, which falsely affects the viewer's perception of the iPhone.
The quality of the iPhone video in your TH-cam video was actually really underwhelming. I don't know if compression or what but it didn't look good on my 4k screen. What all your iPhone video testing shot in 1080p? Would have been great if you shot the entire review with an iPhone since you had so many of them. Thanks for the video. Always enjoy your energy.
You can definitely see the digital bokeh on the front facing camera but wow this phone is very impressive. I wonder if one day all major cameras will just be phones. Great review!
What I don't hear from reviews that they don't mention is that one minute of 4K HDR 10-bit ProRes video shot on an iPhone 13 Pro or 13 Pro Max will take up 6GB of storage. Assuming most cinematographers will start shooting with it. Then again most consumer mobile filmmakers also don't have storage so mostly they will opt to a lower resolution. For consumers, this is not a camera replacement, you're better off with the mini or the regular and get a proper camera. For people who are filmmakers that can afford the Pro and Pro Max, it's only additional gear not a replacement, the sensors on real cameras and the lens blur on real cameras can't compare to computational photography. Mobile filmmaking still has a lot to go. With advancement of computational photography, it's also not far off to be implemented in more cameras as well not just smartphones. I'm just waiting on the day that either Apple or Android will release their own line of cameras mixed with their OS to compete with mirrorless and DSLRs. But for now stick to gear with what you have and don't always think of replacement gear but rather think if you need additional gear.
tbf i think everyone understands the Pro lineup is just marketing/branding. Pro just means better looking materials and extra features, not a "just for the professional" phone. a real "pro" phone would probably be a hard plastic back and side, very bulky with a huge battery.
@@thechrishau I have a little bit of an idea lol. Filming is the least time consuming. Pre and Post work takes all the time! I enjoy your videos man. Hope all is well
In my opinion it's not necessary to upgrade a phone every year. It is okay if you buy Iphone 13 if your phone right now is iphone 9 or below but if it's over that the price is way too high. Iphone 13 costs between 700 and 1600$ so i dont think it really makes such a big difference. For that money you could get soo much more than just a phone.
From all the Camera tests I've seen, this one has the best video quality from the phone. For some reason the other camera tests I've seen had very compressed-like low quality image, like a low quality GIF/JPEG.
Amazing Stuff. Thank you Chris. This review is very enlightening. I will def' check out square circle. I want to suggest you send them the video of them joggling so they can have it on their IG. From the looks of things, I am not sure they planned to film themselves. Great Stuff.
Hey. I had to wait till this month (technically I didn’t have an upgrade till next month but I paid it off) to upgrade. I am glad I did. I upgraded from iPhone XR to iPhone 13 pro in alpine green. I love the cameras on this thing. I enjoyed the video. Thanks for the content and hard work.
“Why does it cost as much as a Macbook?” Well, it basically IS a Macbook plus a compact camera smooshed together and squeezed into a tiny package. Then they put some crazy software features and a cellular chip on top. Based on the number of things you can do with it, if you can get a notebook or a smartphone for the same price, then the smartphone might be the better deal.
Hey Chris, I wanted to join to your newsletter but when I write my mail down it says: "An error occurred when submitting. Please try again later." It's been a week but I cannot do it...
Funny question, within the time you shot this in cinematic mode. Is that the actual quality after the shot or is that color graded already. Asking for a friend lol.
Chris, did you notice if they got rid of the ghost lights that happen? I am wondering if the larger bumps have helped eliminate that. Great content as always!
There is no midnight black colour option in the pro lineup...I think you meant graphite. Would have been nice to have a more in depth review of night mode
People have been talking about iPhone being the king when it comes to videos, but a look at Chris' footage at 5:14, I kind of feel that any Samsung flagships over the past 4 years could do better than that. And since Chris is himself a professional filmmaker, it's not about the skills, it's about the phone, which seems to be inferior, not superior, than Android flagships.
If you care about storage options, camera updates, 120hz and new battery then you could buy it but other than that save your money for the 14 or 15 lol
Hey Chris, considering you guys roll with the Sony line up of cameras, have you ever considered ever playing with the Sony phones? I'm currently on the new Sony Xperia 1iii and it's a beast!
He didn't tested it, but yes, it's included. It starts automatically when you are 14cm close to the subject and you can go all the way to 2cm. The down side of it is that, that you don't have any control over it....
Please use 2 sec overlays for comments. LOL, I love them so much, super fun and funny… but had to go back and pause to read them. Please, just one more second… they stay on the screen 🤩
Theres still something about iphone footage that looks like the clarity is cranked down. I prefer Samsung for video but Im to invested in the apple ecosystem 😅
I’m rocking a iPhone 11 product red 😬! The ASMR was better than the real ting……hehehehe cracks me up how you chuck you bag around with a 05 Honda worth of stuff 😂
Watching on an 8K TV and not impressed with camera quality. I think is good though for social media. Nothing beats Blackmagic RED and cinema cameras. I will stick with my 12 and Galaxy Flip 3. Hopefully next year will be a notchless design.
I would assume the reason why the 13 pro max is at $1100 is probably because the power of the cpu and the latest and greatest software that was implemented into the camera quality. That's just my guess.
Great video.. I pick up my pro Sunday but there is no justifying price. When they go to $2000 for a iphone with the same specs that only cost $400 to make I think most will still find a way to justify it. It’s over priced period, but they have enough of us willing to pay that. They justify why they get 300%profit we should not imo. Again Great vid!
today I bought the iphone 13 mini and I have a big problem with the main camera (wide). It has green flare all over the place ... does it happen to someone? help :(
What phone is everyone rocking right now!? How was my ASMR impression? Rate me.
It was nice. Nice editing. Very nice location, what a sight.

iPhone 7 Plus lol but ordered an iPhone 13 pro max with 1T
Every time you throw that bag it hurts my feelings

Chris Hau, throwing bags, making kids juggle, moving barricades to ponds, and scaring pigeons. Love this guy.

There is no 4K ProRes in iPhones. Just HD.
Well, actually there is no ProRes at all yet. It will come as an update.
Announcing "SLOW MOTION TEST" as you do it was brilliant hahaha!
Unique iPhone perspective, Chris -- Also, the "SLOW MOTION" Pigeon test was great, especially the shout 😂

Should I buy the dji pocket 2 or the iPhone 13 for vlogging?
The Pocket 2 will look better, but the advantage with the iPhone is that you will always have it on you and thus be able to capture more
That purple case on pro max is original apple case ? I want that color.

Cinematic mode would probably look better when toned down (less blur).

How much quality dose the videos loose once it’s uploaded to TH-cam
