    The song is an indirect reference to the Parable of the Prodigal Son from the Bible. A couple of members of the band, including Kerry Livgren, the keyboardist and guitar player and composer of this song, were on a spiritual journey, that eventual ended in them converting to Christianity. Dave Hope, the bassist became a priest.

    • @bryanirvine6169
      @bryanirvine6169 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Walsh, the other Keyboardist and lead vocalist, was not on a spiritual journey at that point, and actually objected to the Christian direction the band was taking after Kerry Livgren's conversion to Christianity. It was one of the things that tore the band apart.

    As the mom of a 'wayward son' I can explain it. Young men have to go through a phase where they're a bit insane. The dad is telling his kid that he's okay the way he is. That this is normal. That he needs to expend this energy and gain the experience. He's reassuring his son that it will come to an end. He will find peace in this life. He's just got to this stage. He's also saying that he's been through it. He's remembering what he went through. He's saying that there's still an echo of that inside of him, but that it's okay.

    When I was growing up (I'm ancient) they lyrics were a vital part of the song. It was pure poetry that could actually stand on its own, even without the music. IMHO, that's what we've lost more than anything. The lyrics were part of the journey of the song. The music led your emotions, but the lyrics brought your mind along with your mind. That made a good song an all-consuming thing.
    I haven't hear that in years.

    Yes! And, the part that is popular on Supernatural is the opening. The song only picks up after the first verse. And, there is also a variation that was used in one episode which makes it more of a ballad. It also only featured the first verse of the song, sang by some of the young actresses in that episode.

    Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to
    Red Rocks (Colorado/God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls.
    I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
    I still have this LP./Album.

    Neil Peart used a glockenspiel (tuned metal bars) as part of his drum set. The bearded singer that wasn't playing an instrument, Robby Steinhardt, is an exceptional classically-trained violinist, and also sings lead vocals on some of their songs. In fact, when the band first formed it was intended that he would be the primary singer, but then they added Steve Walsh to play keyboards and discovered that he was an outstanding singer.
    Please react to some "Kansas" songs that include Steinhardt's violin: "Dust in the Wind", "Hold On", "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)", and "Song for America".

    It's the man's soul, God, his higher self, etc.. "Carry on, my wayward son." In other words, "You're on a quest, so keep going." "I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high," is a reference to the myth of Icarus, where he built wings out of wax in order to escape his imprisonment. But in flying beyond the walls he flew too close to the sun, his wings melted, and he fell into the sea.

    A lot of people took this song as an anthem for returning Vietnam Veterans who were readjusting to civilian life when this song/album came out in 1976. Many returning servicemen had been drafted to fight in an unpopular war on the other side of the world, and they didn’t want to go. Some came back broken (PTSD). They fought for their country, but many in their country shunned and scorned them when they returned, calling them baby killers. It was absolutely disgraceful. Listening to the lyrics from that perspective gives the song a lot more weight and relevance for that time. I think the 1977 movie “Heroes” used it as part of it’s soundtrack.
