    Urghhh if only i found this video sooner! I recently bought 7 set of micron pen (wow ryt?) from notebook therapy which were FAKE. I should have done my research before placing the order but i was so convinced that it was real and the reviews were ALL positive which i would guess were also FAKE. I could've bought these "micron pens" in wish for a CHEAPER price if i wanted to save money.

      Aww, sorry to hear that. The reviews were quite likely genuine, but from people who don't know what a Micron is supposed to be like. They're not bad pens for non-wet work, it's just that they're regular writing pen ink in cheaply made Japanese-style fineliner casings.

      If you're in Europe, and you're looking for a legit art store that takes online orders, I recommend Jackson's. They're in the UK. Certainly not a discount option, but they don't sell fakes, and their shipping it very fair. I'm Canadian, and I'll order from them before I look at American companies because the shipping is better.

    Thank you for bringing this to our attention, Jenna! After watching this I immediately examined each one of my Microns closely. It seems that I did pick up a package of fakes somewhere along the way. I noticed that the ink seems to flow onto the paper more effortlessly with my genuine 03 while I had to apply slightly more pressure with the fake one to get a line. The line was not as smooth and consistent with the fake and the nib seemed more "scratchy" as it went across the paper.

    I bought two bulk boxes of Microns on Amazon back in September (around 12 markers) because I was going to go broke paying almost 3.50 a piece for them at Hobby Lobby. I'm an avid inker and burn through a lot of these babies, and every once in a while I score a golden goose where the ink flow is amazing and the nib lasts a long time and I am able to get three months out of the same pen. Because of all of this, being able to get 12 of these for 20$ seemed too good to be true. The reviews on them were all great, so I ordered the two boxes, they shipped from Japan, and even showed up in a little Micron box... However, every single pen I've used from this box has been absolute trash. Literally after uncapping a brand new one, I could get half a comic page inked before the ink started appearing lighter like it wasn't flowing through the nib right. All the markers would run dry or make very faint markings within a few minutes of use. I've compared them to my authentic ones, but they are 100% identical to the ones I bought in store. I'm still not sure if they're counterfeit or if I just got a bad box. Either way, I'm going back to buying them at Hobby Lobby. It wasn't worth the hassle to save a few bucks lol

    • @JennaGetsCreative
      @JennaGetsCreative  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes! That's unfortunate. I've heard more recently that the counterfeiters are getting far better at matching the text/font than when I bought the fakes in this video, but it's odd that they shipped from Japan if they are indeed fakes. The fakes tend to come from China.

      @@JennaGetsCreative no I didn't mean that.They were apparently fake but there should be another striking difference between the fake and the genuine ones. And it is the boldness of writing "Micron". Thats the one prominent difference between them.

    • @JennaGetsCreative
      @JennaGetsCreative  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apparently the most recent fakes have done a better job with the writing, so that's not reliable anymore. I have heard that, that the writing on the fakes is more bold. I wouldn't say my 2 year old takes here's are more bold but the spacing to the letters is different.

    Very helpful video. I have 2 questions if you can possibly answer them. 1. What is the brush called that you used that has water in it (I'm new to this so learning as I go) to test for waterproof? and 2. I came across another video where someone claimed fake Microns because of the sticker label as opposed to the printed label, would you know if there is any truth to this? In my 2 sets, I noticed the black has a printed label and the rest have sticker labels, all purchased on Amazon. What are your thoughts? I am curious. Thank you for this very informative video.

    • @JennaGetsCreative
      @JennaGetsCreative  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The paint brush with water inside it is called a water brush or a water pen brush.
      It's possible that sticker labels mean nothing, some high end brands have switched to that, but I'm not sure. I haven't seen sticker labels on anything saying its Micron yet. If it shipped through an Amazon warehouse ("fulfilled by Amazon") I would trust it, but if it was sold AND shipped by a third party seller it's possible they're selling fakes and haven't been reported yet.

      Products intended for different countries will always have differences in packaging, so that sounds reasonable. For example, products going to the USA need Spanish translations. The thing with comparing fakes (it's on most videos of people out there who comparing copies)
    The viewers might not have the real one in the first place. So probably next time you should position yourself as one who might not have the real one
    The feel of the pen
    The ink dryness or wetness/opacity chart
    Physical build (not just how the text looks)

    • @JennaGetsCreative
      @JennaGetsCreative  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know what to recommend because I don't know where you are (for shipping options). Any Micron listing on Amazon that is fulfilled by Amazon, or the seller has the word "Sakura" in the name is going to be the real thing. Any reputable art stores will stock the real thing. If shipping from the USA is the best option for you, blick.com or jerrysartarama.com have excellent prices. If shipping from the UK is the best option for you (it's actually better for me in Canada than the American companies for small items!) then jacksonsart.com is a great option as well. Any art stores local to you that carry Microns probably have the real thing, and they'd be able to tell you for sure if you ask. If you've got Walmart or Michaels near you, they both carry real Microns as well.

    Not to be contrary, but the "extra words" you mention on the "fake" Micron pens is "Conforms to ASTM D 4236" and is "ASTM D-4236 is the standard practice of labeling art materials for chronic health hazards. The designation “conforms to ASTM D-4236” means all of the potentially hazardous components of the art product have been clearly labeled on the product packaging."
    Specific to North American Markets I believe

    • @JennaGetsCreative
      @JennaGetsCreative  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wasn't implying that the ASTM labelling itself is a marker of anything being fake; I was pointing out that the fake ones have a longer segment of text in the ASTM section. That said, newer fakes have the exact same text as legitimate ones now, so that point is void now anyway.

    @wolfboy2406 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, idk if the ones i bought are fake because i bought them from the actual sellers (Sakura) on amazon but they ran out of ink super fast and some of the text on the pen is crooked, another thing is when i erase sketches over the pen, the pen lines lighten too, are they fake?
    also, here is the link to where i bought it from: www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0008G8G8Y?ref_=pe_2361882_295287342_301_E_DDE_di_1

    • @JennaGetsCreative
      @JennaGetsCreative  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most Amazon sellers are legit, particularly if Amazon's warehouses are involved in the shipping. That's unfortunate that they ran out fast, though. I wonder if they'd been sitting around in a warehouse too long. I find the brush nib ones in particular die fast.

    If I purchase from ebay do they sell counterfeit Sakura Pigma Micron?

    • @JennaGetsCreative
      @JennaGetsCreative  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the seller. EBay is just a market place website and doesn't actually sell or distribute anything themselves like Amazon does. If they're coming from China or nearby countries other than Japan and the price is too good to be true, I would be wary.
      I should add though that the counterfeits are usually still good as fineliners in general. If you only work in ink (as in the pens), or use your fineliners *after* any watercolour or markers, then it doesn't matter that they're not the legitimate ink.
