You condensed down my drawing class lecture of 2 hours into a simple 3 minute video, thank you so much I finally understand and get the concept! TIme to practice :)
Thank you SOOOO much, i'm an aspie and the other 9+ minutes videos here in YT just wouldn't get a way into my head. Your way of explaining pretty much made it all click in my head, so - for that - i'm really grateful.
this rules, thanks for breaking it down! i've seen so many other tutorials basically say "this is really useful" and then they do it full bore without any real explanation.
Thanks for that- so many tutorials show a locked arm, then transferring to a canvas using an extended & locked arm- great if you have a purpose built studio, or are sitting on the edge of a hill somewhere with a full easel, but for those of us sitting at home with a drawing board on our laps, its a no go! Worse than that, its amazing how many teachers simply can't get this- after all it wasn't like that in The Angel Academy, dahrlings! ;-) Your simple ratio method is loads more usable.
@ Viana Szabo When I do sight measuring with a pencil and comparing width and height. I am having trouble when measurements aren’t in equal parts/fractions. How do I work this out on the pencil?
If you can keep your arm bent at a consistent angle it will work. The reason extending the arm is so effective is because you always have the same distance and your measurements will always be consistent. Hope that helps!
Unfortunately, these measurements usually form absolutely useless ratios like 1:1.2 or something. I can see that the pitches is slightly higher than it is wider by simply looking at it. Measurement is not really helping me achieve anything practical. Sadly there's no other reliable way than drawing into the bin for few thousand hours. Then you don't really need any methods anymore.

How would I apply this technique if the object is near me? I can't extend my arm fully :/
