Everyone knows London. The red double-deckers, the black taxis, the red phone booths, the red brick buildings, the guards with the bearskin fur caps are well known by even those, who have never been to the English capital. Arthur Conan Doyle was NOT English, but Scottish. He was born and brought up in Edinburgh, Scotland, and train to be a doctor at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. After he qualified he took a position as a General Practitioner (GP) in the south of England, during which time he wrote the Holmes stories. Although Holmes was quintessentially English, Conan Doyle himself said that he based Holmes on his medical tutor at the University of Edinburgh - Dr Joseph Bell.
