Weekend Showcase: The Wiz comes to children's theatre in Hopkins

Stages Theatre in Hopkins is coming alive with a new production of a modern classic. Actors will perform in a production of 'The Wiz', which is a modern take on The Wizard of Oz story. "We at Stages have been wanting to do a production of The Wiz for awhile," Artistic Director Sandy Boren-Barrett said.
In the production the characters like Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Wicked Witch of the West are the same.
"It is all of the things that you love about the original Dorothy story, but it's in a more urban and modern setting," said Boren-Barrett. However the production features some new twists. For example, memorable music and dance numbers punctuate the show.
"I think that the tornado is really beautifully done in this in that it's a ballet," said Boren-Barrett. The show also features local talent, who say that the production is fun to be a part of. "It's a very fun journey that they all go through, there's a lot of obstacles in the way, but its overall a fun journey for them," Andrew Moy of Plymouth who plays the Cowardly Lion said.
"The songs are great and the dances are great, the acting is great," said Isabella Huerta who plays Dorothy.
Dorothy and the other characters learn a timeless lesson on their adventure together.
"In the end she really learns about how important her family is to her and how she wants to be back home so badly," Huerta said.
The show runs from July 27th to August 3rd at the Stages Theatre in Hopkins. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children and seniors.
