Congo Political Turmoil: Who Was Christian Malanga, the Man at the Center of the Uprising?

Christian Malanga, an eccentric opposition figure, led a group of three Americans in a brazen attack on Congo's presidential palace, resulting in six deaths, including his own, and numerous arrests. Malanga, originally a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, worked as a car dealer and had eight children. Despite facing legal issues in the US, including assault and domestic violence charges, some of which were dismissed, Malanga's experiences fueled his political ambitions. He returned to the DRC, founding the United Congolese Party to combat government corruption and declaring himself the "President of New Zaire." His political career included a failed 2011 parliamentary run, detainment, and an aborted 2017 coup attempt before his death during the palace attack. His 21-year-old son, Marcel Malanga, born in the US and known for his flashy lifestyle on social media, was also arrested in connection with the uprising.
