    I love The Spyderco Vallotton for it's built quality and drop dead gorgeous look. In my very large hands the liner lock and thumb studs are helping me to open and close the knife efficiently. Unfortunately this is not a EDC knife for me because the handle is slippery and every metal edge that you can find is sharp to the touch. Still this knife has a special place in my collection, despite the blade being thicker than a concrete milkshake!

      I love mine, it was my first Spyderco. I stoned the sharp edges very lightly, now it's butter smooth.

      Same here. I have many Spyderco knives and the looks of this one is my favorite. Is it my EDC? no, I carry other Spydies for that. This one is my carry knife for when I feel like carying a unique-looking blade. That works well for what it is.

  • @justforfunFL
    @justforfunFL ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It is a fighting knife and as an ex combat vet, you need a thick blade due to bones guarding critical parts of a human and thick clothes. Plus good for prying and other heavy duty tasks. Not everyone carries knives to cut paper or an apple. This knife is a serious knife for serious knife hard use people.

      Your eyes must be brown my friend. The only thing you are expert of is bullshitting. I agree with Eric that this knife is probably more of a tactical knife. You could put this one on your night stand. For me, Spyerco's best EDC knife is the Delica. The Delica is light weight, a great slicer, and will do most anything you need it to do.

  • @gregorywalker4997

    wonderful review from THE go-to reviewer. not all knives have to be light weight for me, or slicey like the chapparal. i'll admit, i'm somewhat of a style freak who looks for unusual knives that i might never carry. for pure utility, i'll gladly carry the rat 2 in aus8 and sharpen with glee until the blade disappears...

  • @jeremysuggs8345
    @jeremysuggs8345 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I had no real love for this knife whatsoever....then I actually laid hands on one. I would love to have this knife in my collection. So unique and well made. I'm realizing lately that I have no idea what I actually think of a knife until I handle it. Another example: Rockjumper. Wasn't interested,then I handled one and love that knife now too. It's like a pm3 lw with a big ass warncliff blade on it and I like it. Example 3 was the pm3 light weight. Love it now too!!

    • @krislong9338
      @krislong9338 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been very happy with the action on the PM3 LW models I've used. smooth, almost broken in out of the box, and it surprises me because they're so light I don't expect the inertia of the blade to pull it open on flicking. I wish it were a little bigger but I guess I don't have a PM2 LW to compare yet.
      Totally agree about putting hands on a knife. I see interesting looking knives at all kinds of different prices. Over the 50-100 dollar range I really want to hold one or have experience with a knife they are regularly compared to, perderably actually handling them. Getting up into higher prices, I'm more adamant about handling them. I have a pretty good idea of how most Spydjes act and feel so I might let them slide a little bit but any other brand going over about 200 bucks, it's hard to pull the trigger until I know it is exceptional in hand/use.

  • @plumtiger1
    @plumtiger1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This knife is gorgeous! Well made and well finished. I personally love the thumb studs. They give me more leverage on the heavy blade. The Valloton is built like a tank because its meant for stabbing. The designer is known for his Italian stiletto designs. No its not for EDC, but for dates and dress up occasions, and even for home defense. That blade aint closing with that ridiculously thick liner!

    Spyderco (and Kizer and a couple of others) stop ruining perfectly good knives with all the mounting holes for pocket clips already. For crying out loud make right left specific models. Nothing worse than seeing a great looking knife ruined by having tiny holes drilled all over it (especially around the pivot). Anybody out there carry a decent knife tip down anymore? Why? Stop it................................Okay, all out of hole hate for the moment.

    • @propanedaddy5577
      @propanedaddy5577 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually think the little holes on mine look cool. If I had a complaint about the appearance of the knife (which I really don't I've carried one for like 4 years) it would be to get rid of the spidey hole and have a flipper.

    • @propanedaddy5577
      @propanedaddy5577 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And that's barely an actually complaint because the hole makes it so much fun to open and close.

      I carry tip-down. It started with my first Spyderco stainless POLICE model. Been carrying that way ever since. I can draw and open this way faster than when I carry my Autonomy 2, which is only set up for tip-up carry.

  • @ZechsAznable
    @ZechsAznable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    **Insert obligatory witticism about being early to comment**
    I never really understood the overly thick blade on this knife. It’s supposed to be an homage to Italian stiletto type knives and I feel like typically those have thinner blades? Also, it doesn’t really seem like a “working knife” so why include a thick blade? I’d really like to hear Butch’s rationale behind that decision (if he’s the one that made that decision to begin with).

    • @propanedaddy5577
      @propanedaddy5577 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When you stab things it makes kind of a triangular shaped hole which would be harder to stitch. Just make sure you have a firm grip so you don't cut your fingers if you hit a bone **giggles like a psycho and runs off** Oh and it's extremely durable. I've carried and used this knife for several years and there is basically no wear and tear.

    Looking at the mini... that spider hole takes up a ton of real estate, saw a video on it and it looked like it had a recurved blade (Spyderco shot show preview) but pics from bladehq make it look like it doesn’t, and s30v on a $200... kinda still want one.

    I’m pretty new to collecting knives. I’ve bought a good amount of them the past year though. This strongly caught my eye, I’m extremely tempted to get it, but I’m finding that the big heavy knives I bought, I’m never carrying, they just sit in my office for me to fidget with once in a while. I think I should probably focus more on knives that I plan on carrying

    I was going to comment on the video skipping between the Bad and the Ugly, but I see it was edited out intentionally for the disassembly voiding the warranty no longer being true, which I appreciate, although it was jarring while watching it. If this is going to be an issue for future reviews (no idea how many more Spyderco reviews you have left with this) I might suggest shooting a quick filler explanation instead and splicing that in.

    Really like the looks of this knife and like that it's built like a tank. I Didn't think it was that big of a knife until I saw it next to the 0452cf. I also don't care for the weird zero grind near the tip, and the blade could be thinner, however, I do own a few thick blades that actually do slice fairly well because of how they did their grind. Overall a pass for me but it still looks nice.

    • @HikikomoriZone
      @HikikomoriZone 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that's a zero grind, just another bevel. Zero grind would refer to a blade with no microbevel.

    • @cameronutt6383
      @cameronutt6383 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lance Leon I didn't really know what to call it, I've seen that grind on WE knives and didn't really like sharpening them (just an unnecessary complication). They're vaguely reminiscent of like a double sided Scandi but kinda half assed (which in hindsight is probably what I meant to say but it's early so Zero grind is what I typed). That grind does make for a good cutter, just not the best for sharpening on a fixed angle system.

      I tried it on my Stretch 2. It´s better when you put the pocket clip on the other side and carry it in your back pocket. That way you have the knife in reverse grip when you pull it out and your hand is in good position to stab someone right away, which is of course the most important thing for your edc knife. I wouldn´t reccomend whipping it out in the lunchroom to murder an apple. It could be frowned uppon. Although, it will give you (a general you, not you personally) a good reason to see the HR lady that you have a crush on...

    Buying this knife is one of my big regrets. I hate the ergonomics. The handle is unreasonably thick, bulky. The lock bar digs into my finger because it doesn't have the same curvature as the finger choil, making the finger choil pointless. I also can't comprehend why Spyderco decided to drill holes on the bolsters. Nobody will put the pocket clip there. Even if 1 of 100000 prefers it that way it's just not worth to ruin the aesthetics of a knife like this. Overall this knife is a big fail.

    If this knife didn't have the Spydie-hump it would be one of the best looking knives. Instead it's ugly. I still like it though.

    I think you get this knife to be eccentric over function. I got it because I like thick boiz :D The 452 cf was my previous carry knife as well as the contego and boker kwaiken.

    Kinda reminds me of my Boker Marlowe Squail. A large bolster knife that made for a complex take down. Good looking, but big, heavy & quite muder-ee...never carry it.

      No it's manual. Vallotton also made a custom hidden button" auto version where the scale slides over to deploy. But the normal production version is manual.

    it would be a good looking knife if that ugly thumb hole was gone. make it a flipper and it would be awesome.

    Interesting how polarizing this knife is. I find it absolutely hideous. Would look much more fluid without the spydie hole.
