They are about the same size and horn growth is similar. The Painted Desert registry allows a person to see the pedigree of the sheep he's getting so he can be sure of the genetics. I also believe there is a bigger market since the colors make them more popular as a small acreage animal and you don't rely on raising rams for high fence.
I started with just a couple ewes, when I made the switch to Painted Desert I started with 6 Painted Desert and 2 other ewes. Then each year I added to or held back ewe lambs. Of course if you hold back ewe lambs to add to your flock, you will need a second ram.
