the trumpet solo at the 10-minute mark that continues for about 25 seconds
always amazes me - i am waiting for the trumpet player to run out of breath

Haha! Indeed that would be hard. Britten is smarter than that though - cleverly he orchestrated it so it's actually two trumpets passing the line back and forth every other bar swapping on the downbeat so it sounds like one :)

This is a beautifully stark performance of Op.20 reminiscent of Britten's own first recording of it.
Previn is similar with a better recording but this version has a haunting quality, perhaps because Kempe was performing in his native Dresden during a very busy career in the UK, Switzerland, USA and leading world tours with the RPO which he took over from Sir Thomas Beecham.
He died at the young age of 65.

Previn's 1978 version with the Chicago is available and rather better than the LSO one, which suffered from a thin recording.

Can you recommend alternative performances? I'd like to hear your opinion. Or at least throw down a sentence or two of critique?

Cantelli especially favoured this work but his live recording can be hard to find without a lot of digging.
Boxed sets of the tragic young conductors too brief career tend to leave out non-standard repertoire works.

Great piece but such a terrible performance.
