So inspiring, I've followed Jaime since 2009 and never heard her speak before - I reached out to her once to take our images whilst we were in NYC, but naturally she was busy ;) (pushing my luck!). She influences me enormously with everything I do and I can relate so much to her lifestyle in Provence (we live in rural North Yorkshire in the UK and have a wild flower meadow and I feel very connected to nature in the same way she does). Her Instagram is in a league of it's own and the way she 'influences' is honest, authentic and totally uncontrived. A majestically beautiful bull-shit free zone that pushes me to learn more about photography editing and presenting my own art. She is an absolute inspiration that many other 'influencers' could learn from. Thank you for this James - I've watched it at least six times already.
I adore Jamie's feed and her aesthetic! Her work has a romantic, timeless nuance that is the perfect counterbalance to her media/technique of choice making it modern and heroic. Perfection!
I can't tell you how much this resonated. We are a photography team and freaked out and moved out of NYC after 13 years. The city will eat you alive if you let it. We struggle with the idea of being commercial ('professional' WTF that means) photographers and having this separate life on social media. We get how much the photography industry, especially in NYC, hates social media. It's bull shit. Instagram doesn't reward truly creative, unique people. It's for mass market sameness. If it's basic and popular, you get served more of the same. We are so happy to see creatives like you doing what's interesting and not just jumping on the popularity band wagon. It's refreshing and gives me hope.
She is living my dream, I'm a ordinary Mom of many, now great people who never took a good photograph. Her talent and artistry just moves me, every time!! Thanks for allowing us to love her more!!
I agree about her instastories. I really love seeing how she brings about her final creation. I have learned so much just watching her. Jamie does an excellent job.
Jamie's Insta Stories are the only ones I watch daily and all the way through. Been following her since Tumblr. Hugely inspired by her individuality, romanticism, and storytelling. She is a pre-Raphaelite Cindy Sherman.
Such a wonderful interview! Thanks Jamie and James!! Jamie, I would love to see your photography tutorials. You don’t have to post regularly. Just post when you want to... thank you both again! ~Erin xo
Wonderful interview with one of my favorite photographers! I've followed her since the tumblr days, and was inspired by that work to delve into my own stuff on a deeper level. It's certainly not as artsy as Jamie's beautiful work, but I do find joy in my own creative outlets. And I think that's what is most important. Thanks for the tip on Instagram not showing a picture if you post in too rapid a succession. I didn't realize it was doing that. Instagram is the love-hate story of my life right now.
a) Do you know that this conversation is not also a podcast (well, at least on Apple)? There is a podcast episode titled Episode 76 but it is actually Episode 77 (that's what it says in the details). So there are two episodes 77, and no actual 76 and no Jamie Beck! I'm not saying this to be critical, but because this is SUCH a great episode and anyone who only listens to the podcasts and doesn't watch the videos, would miss it :-( b) I just want to share my little "discovering Jamie Beck" story. A couple years ago I was feeling totally uninspired for a New Year's Resolution so I think I googled "good New Year's Resolutions" (if that's not sad I don't know what is) and her New Year's resolutions for 2017 was in an Ann Street Studios blog post. It. Blew. Me. Away. I couldn't share this thing with enough people. I think the next year I did a blog post for New Years and said like, "People. Listen. Don't even bother trying to come up with something on your own. These are the BEST NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS in the history of man. Just pick one or a couple and go with it. You're not going to come up with anything better." Ha. Plus, there's 31 of them! There is legit something for everyone! Anyway, at the time I didn't know her name or that she was a photographer. Some of the resolutions I didn't even UNDERSTAND: "Study the light of Provence. Break it down into a scientific equation." WTF?!? It sounds so lovely and amazing but what even IS that?? I think one of my resolutions for that year WAS "UNDERSTAND what 'study the light of provence and break it down into scientific equation' MEANS." I failed because I still don't know. But at least I know that it is a THING. c) (sorry for rambling but I'm on vacation this week so have TIME for once) When she said (3:35) "Discovery is one of the best and most powerful things we can share," tears started running down my face. I actually paused the video at the word "discover" and that just FELT so powerful to me. This is a GREAT episode. Anyway, sorry for the long comment(s), I did want to make sure podcast listeners aren't missing this. I don't even know if anyone goes back to read old comments....
