  • The Stewartstown Railroad is unique. It still operates under its original charter from 1884. It runs from Stewartstown, Pennsylvania to New Freedom, Pennsylvania on 7.4 miles of track.
    The railroad has had its troubles, but it has never been bought, merged, sold, or bankrupt. That's quite a story in today's world.
    Poppins and I take a ride with its crew in the cab of the locomotive to explore this unique piece of American history.

    Have lived near Stewartstown for years and remember a lot of the disrepair and neglect throughout the 2000s
    Glad to see where things are now!! I actually now live about 0.1 miles up the road now. I hear them all the time diring summer and had been considering volunteering. Will definitely have to look into it!!

    It would have been alot more cooler if they had the original steam train pulling the passenger train cars It would make it more arigional from when it was first built

    Can they ship freight?

    • @RestlessViking
      @RestlessViking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe they can as a common carrier. However, the track is isolated these days without a connection to the mainline.

    • @wavesnbikes
      @wavesnbikes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RestlessViking what shippers did they used to have?

    • @RestlessViking
      @RestlessViking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wavesnbikes I don't know. I do know that in the 1960s, they lost all of their shippers because the connecting line of another railroad (from New Freedom) was destroyed and abandoned. Before then, agricultural products was their main product along with a couple of manufacturers.

    Actually there was another station on another leg of the wye. It was wood and looked like the present station. It was still there in 1972.
