Kaline deserved higher. I'm sure this guy never saw him play. He was impressive, never made a bad throw, perfect technique, explosive cannon for an arm.
A law school prof friend of mine played sandlot ball in Baltimore with Kaline.He found it remarkable that the guy was outplaying grown men when he was barely in middle school-a sprig of a kid,not even 125 lbs-He went straight from those sandlots to Detroit,and a batting title when he was barely out of his teens.
Hank Aaron was my hero when I was growing up. I followed his every move and when I could get a game he played in on my transistor radio I would have it to my ear in bed and listened. Quick story I have which I find funny now. Back in the late '50's a bunch of guys on our street used to make believe we were playing baseball and we would come up to the plate making believe we were baseball stars. Everybody knew Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays, so when I came up to the plate and mentioned that I was Hank Aaron, everybody said; Who?? Who's he??? Well they sure found out. I have a great picture of Hank in my man's room.
You should mention that Frank Robinson was the MVP twice -- once in the National League and once in the American League. The trade to Baltimore should have worked out to be more equal, but it didn't end up that way. Milt Pappas was a terrific pitcher, something the Reds needed -- who knew he would "lay an egg"?

AL Kaline was one of roughly thirty major league ball players who NEVER, EVER, EVER played a single game in the Minor League. There were seasons where he led the AL in RF assists despite having fewer attempted throws than other right fielders because the smarter ball players were tired of getting thrown out attempting to go from first to third on a ball hit to him. They would, however, run on other right fielders.
I'm glad you mentioned Frank Robinson, he was one of the best. Averaged .300 30hr and 100 rbi for the ten years he played with the reds 324 of his 586 hr were with the reds. He had an internal fire that drove him to be the best. Harry heilmann was a good choice. 2660 hits 1551 RBI, .342 lifetime ave. Same as babe Ruth 2 points lower than Ted Williams. He won the batting title 4 times '21-'23 -25'and 1927. All over .390 1923 .403 ave. 1 of only 4 men in baseball to hit over .390 4 times.
It’s a pretty good list… there are a lot of great right fielders…. Didn’t Barry Bonds play right field? Babe Ruth? You forgot Dave Parker! He was a force to be reckoned with…. At 64 I split hairs all the time over this. The best 2 defensive right fielders I have ever seen in their primes were Dave Winfield and Roberto Clemente. Best arms, they covered the most ground. They were the best..

Al Kaline - It's astonishing how similar Kaline and Clemente were. Comparing them is a bushel of fun. 6. Reggie Jackson 7. Mookie Betts - moving up the list 8. Paul Waner 9. Harry Heilman 10. Shoeless joe Jackson. Ehh.. why not? I suspect any number of modern players like Tony Gwynn or Dwight Evans are technically better players than Waner, Heilman, etc. but when I find myself digging into the stats to justify it, I just shrug and go with WAR. Ichiro specifically has a suprisingly empty stat line. That's a fun argument for a different day.
I think Gwynn and Ichiro should be back to back in the top 5. I understand that a top 10 list will always bring critism, and my critism is the lack of emphasis on hits. A top 10 list of best hitters would no doubt include those players. Between longevity for Gwynn and 5 tool dominance for Ichiro. They both were right feilders throughout their lasting careers. Maybe I'm experiencing some recency bias, but great list man!
If am rating right fielders, I would look at error ratios, golden glove awards, strength and accuracy of throwing arm, and consistency in all those areas over a sustained period of time, say 7-10 years. Reggie Jackson, for example, arguably had the most elegant and powerful swing in baseball history, and that argument is worth having regardless of what he did or did not do in right field, very little of which is worthy of memory.
I go back to the days of Mays, Flood, Clemente, etc. Jackson was basically a good power hitter, and also productive at driving in runs. He averaged a strikeout every 4.4 plate appearances. He was an adequate fielder. He also played on winning teams ... and was a Yankee ... which I suppose helps his case.

Reggie Jackson does NOT belong on this list. He was an average fielder at best. The only game he had was homerun power (563) but that was nullified by his strikeouts (2,500+). And Kaline being only 10th? Are you kidding me?! 10 gold gloves and a rifle for an arm that no one would run on without paying the price! Add in all his amazing stats in spite of an injury-plagued career and he's in the top 5 at least. jmo.

The Babe refused to play the sun field as a Yankee. He played mostly LF in the Polo Grounds. He played RF starting 1923 when Yankee Stadium opened at home. He also played RF in Cleveland League Park but was primarily a LF in every other stadium. He played LF in his final year in 1935 for the Boston Braves.

Clemente's bat wasn't up to par with most of the others; just not enough power or walks. Ott, Aaron, Robinson, and Ruth were all easily superior to him.
Roberto Clemente had no peers in right field. 266 assists, 12 Gold Glove Awards, most by any right fielder ever, including Hank Aaron. Clemente and Willie Mays received the award 12 times and no one has matched them since and they left baseball nearly 50 years ago!!! Clemente was the most prolific right fielder of the 1960s: 4 batting titles (1961, 64, 65, 67). He would have won his 5th title in 1969 if Pete Rose didn't bunt single his last turn at bat, beating Clemente by 3 one-hundredths of a point. 3000 hits, 166 triples, 440 doubles. If that doesn't make Clemente the best right fielder of all time, I don't know what would... I think Henry Aaron would tell you that Clemente was the best right fielder he ever saw. I know because I have heard Aaron say it. I don't want to get you ticked off, Mr. Kolyova, but any still living members of the list you created would themselves ask you, Where is Roberto Clemente?

If you want someone that can hit consistently (i.e. high batting average with 95+ RBI) and who can save a game with a catch and just as importantly, a 400-ft throw, Roberto Clemente is your man. Clemente threw runners out at every base, including 1st base. Ask Willie Mays. Threw out Lou Brock who attempted to score from third on a sacrifice fly to right field. Clemente routinely made these plays. In right field, he was untouchable...period...end of story...I'm just saying you cannot ignore Clemente's superior fielding skills when considering the greatest right fielder. On Clemente's fielding attributes alone, I would have him out there over anyone on the list you put together. Why say right fielder, if you mean best hitting right fielder? It appears your list was predicated on which right fielder could hit the most home runs. If that's the case, let us look no further: It's Hank Aaron...Hands down! NR CG Tony Gwynn, Ichiro, and Paul Wagner were on my list. They are not home hitters. I understand your viewpoint, trust me, I really do. It was a tough decision. If I was making a top ten defensive right fielders, then yes, Clemente would be #1. Clemente was a fabulous hitter. Aaron edges him out in that regard. Also, I did compare their dWAR as well, and Clemente beats Aaron by around 16. When it comes to their oWAR, Aaron beats Clemente by around 60. I know Aaron played 5 more seasons than Clemente, but that is a very big difference that can’t be ignored. Again, thanks for the feedback. I love these types of debates. It’s one of the reasons I made these videos.

Dwight Evans may not have had a great lifetime batting average, but he hit almost 400 homers and made one of the greatest plays of all time vs Cincinnati in the 1975 Series. Great and accurate arm, super fielder. Once Walt Hrniak straightened out Dwight’s hitting, he was the best all around right fielder in the game. Surely the equal of, if not better than, Guerrero. And … CLEMENTE #1! Hammerin’ Hank, #2. Not as great in the field as Clemente. Plus, there’s a reason for The Roberto Clemente Award.

I think you are too focused on hitting rather than fielding. In many cases it doesn't change the standing but it does negate the whole point of the field position. For example Ichiro is obviously one of the greatest right fielders to ever play the game just on fielding. Plus he could hit. Reggie Jackson was a great hitter who could field but wasn't a stand out in fielding. He didn't embarrass himself in right fielding either. Point being you are focused on hitting not fielding.

Reggie Jackson was a bit of a liability in the outfield, had a lifetime batting average of 262 and holds the record for a batter with the most strike outs of all time. Shouldn't be on this list. .. Where's the Babe !!!

They couldn't stand one another, so Cobb was put into rightfield for the most of his career. EX: Mantle was a rightfielder, but moved to center after DiMaggio retired. Is Mantle a rightfielder or centerfielder? Maybe we can agree to OUTFIELDER?? Though, Mantle did play some shortstop.

So don’t count offense? RF is one of the least valuable defensive positions, and that’s why I think it’s better to go with an offensive guy.
Also, if we’re going by assists, Aaron does have more lifetime assists.

At 64 I split hairs all the time over this. The best 2 defensive right fielders I have ever seen in their primes were Dave Winfield and Roberto Clemente.

I suspect any number of modern players like Tony Gwynn or Dwight Evans are technically better players than Waner, Heilman, etc. but when I find myself digging into the stats to justify it, I just shrug and go with WAR. Ichiro specifically has a suprisingly empty stat line. That's a fun argument for a different day.
I think Gwynn and Ichiro should be back to back in the top 5. I understand that a top 10 list will always bring critism, and my critism is the lack of emphasis on hits. A top 10 list of best hitters would no doubt include those players. Between longevity for Gwynn and 5 tool dominance for Ichiro. They both were right feilders throughout their lasting careers. Maybe I'm experiencing some recency bias, but great list man!

If am rating right fielders, I would look at error ratios, golden glove awards, strength and accuracy of throwing arm, and consistency in all those areas over a sustained period of time, say 7-10 years.
Reggie Jackson, for example, arguably had the most elegant and powerful swing in baseball history, and that argument is worth having regardless of what he did or did not do in right field, very little of which is worthy of memory.
I go back to the days of Mays, Flood, Clemente, etc. Jackson was basically a good power hitter, and also productive at driving in runs. He averaged a strikeout every 4.4 plate appearances. He was an adequate fielder. He also played on winning teams ... and was a Yankee ... which I suppose helps his case.

Karine was a top 5 hitting 399 Homer's. If they kept better stats he would have come back for #400. One of a handful with 400 Homer's and 3000 hits!
As a Yankee, Babe Ruth played most of his games in right field, around 2/3. He also played a lot of left field so maybe not a “pure” enough right fielder for this list- but surely worth a mention?

Reggie Jackson does NOT belong on this list. He was an average fielder at best. The only game he had was homerun power (563) but that was nullified by his strikeouts (2,500+). And Kaline being only 10th? Are you kidding me?! 10 gold gloves and a rifle for an arm that no one would run on without paying the price! Add in all his amazing stats in spite of an injury-plagued career and he's in the top 5 at least. jmo.

Since this is opinion, one could also include, Willie Keeler, Sam Thompson, Sam Crawford, Sam Rice, Harry Heilmann, Chuck Klein, Kiki Cuyler, Dwight Evans, Tony Oliva, Minnie Minoso, Dave Winfield, Dave Parker, Larry Walker, or multi-position players like Joe Jackson, Stan Musial, Pete Rose and Babe Ruth.

The Babe refused to play the sun field as a Yankee. He played mostly LF in the Polo Grounds. He played RF starting 1923 when Yankee Stadium opened at home. He also played RF in Cleveland League Park but was primarily a LF in every other stadium. He played LF in his final year in 1935 for the Boston Braves.

Clemente's bat wasn't up to par with most of the others; just not enough power or walks. Ott, Aaron, Robinson, and Ruth were all easily superior to him.

Roberto Clemente had no peers in right field. 266 assists, 12 Gold Glove Awards, most by any right fielder ever, including Hank Aaron. Clemente and Willie Mays received the award 12 times and no one has matched them since and they left baseball nearly 50 years ago!!!
Clemente was the most prolific right fielder of the 1960s: 4 batting titles (1961, 64, 65, 67). He would have won his 5th title in 1969 if Pete Rose didn't bunt single his last turn at bat, beating Clemente by 3 one-hundredths of a point. 3000 hits, 166 triples, 440 doubles. If that doesn't make Clemente the best right fielder of all time, I don't know what would... I think Henry Aaron would tell you that Clemente was the best right fielder he ever saw. I know because I have heard Aaron say it.

If you want someone that can hit consistently (i.e. high batting average with 95+ RBI) and who can save a game with a catch and just as importantly, a 400-ft throw, Roberto Clemente is your man. Clemente threw runners out at every base, including 1st base. Ask Willie Mays. Threw out Lou Brock who attempted to score from third on a sacrifice fly to right field. Clemente routinely made these plays. In right field, he was untouchable...period...end of story...I'm just saying you cannot ignore Clemente's superior fielding skills when considering the greatest right fielder. On Clemente's fielding attributes alone, I would have him out there over anyone on the list you put together. Why say right fielder, if you mean best hitting right fielder? It appears your list was predicated on which right fielder could hit the most home runs. If that's the case, let us look no further: It's Hank Aaron...Hands down!

NR CG Tony Gwynn, Ichiro, and Paul Wagner were on my list. They are not home hitters. I understand your viewpoint, trust me, I really do. It was a tough decision. If I was making a top ten defensive right fielders, then yes, Clemente would be #1. Clemente was a fabulous hitter. Aaron edges him out in that regard. Also, I did compare their dWAR as well, and Clemente beats Aaron by around 16. When it comes to their oWAR, Aaron beats Clemente by around 60. I know Aaron played 5 more seasons than Clemente, but that is a very big difference that can’t be ignored. Again, thanks for the feedback. I love these types of debates. It’s one of the reasons I made these videos.

One cannot make any logical defense of the position to not include the finest right fielder of all time on that list. This is past a debate. Debates have logical standpoints of pros and cons. NR CG Clemente is on my list. He’s number 2. I’d take Aaron in every category besides fielding against Clemente. I love Clemente. He’s one of the greatest players to ever set foot on the diamond. If I had to pick Aaron or Clemente, I’d go Aaron with no regrets.

Baseball reference has him listed at 2174 games in RF and 315 in LF. I think that is quite awake. Also, Ruth split time in RF and LF.
Dwight Evans may not have had a great lifetime batting average, but he hit almost 400 homers and made one of the greatest plays of all time vs Cincinnati in the 1975 Series. Great and accurate arm, super fielder. Once Walt Hrniak straightened out Dwight’s hitting, he was the best all around right fielder in the game. Surely the equal of, if not better than, Guerrero. And … CLEMENTE #1! Hammerin’ Hank, #2. Not as great in the field as Clemente. Plus, there’s a reason for The Roberto Clemente Award.
I have Ruth first and Clementine second. Evans was amazing. He said surviving Boston traffic was his best accomplishment.

In all honesty, Ichiro probably shouldn't be on here...just too many options. You have Gwynn, Winfield, Heilmann, and Crawford, all of whom were easily better than Ichiro. Not to mention Ruth of course, who you somehow forgot about lol.

I think you are too focused on hitting rather than fielding. In many cases it doesn't change the standing but it does negate the whole point of the field position. For example Ichiro is obviously one of the greatest right fielders to ever play the game just on fielding. Plus he could hit.
Reggie Jackson was a great hitter who could field but wasn't a stand out in fielding. He didn't embarrass himself in right fielding either. Point being you are focused on hitting not fielding.
For this position, hitting is much more valuable than fielding. RF is one of the least valuable defensive positions. Thanks for the feedback.
Right field is not a spot where you're going to get a ton of defensive value..it's 90% judged based on offense, as it should be.

My contention comes from the history he had with teammate, and HOF member, leftfielder Sam Crawford. They couldn't stand one another, so Cobb was put into rightfield for the most of his career.
