Tornado Alert, It Actually Works!! Part 2 Review In Action

  • I previously showed you this device called Tornado Alert which detects severe weather, lightning and tornados within itself, without the need for NWS EAS, internet or outside sensors. I mentioned in this original video that in the future I would show it in action to see if it works, and it does. Here is the video before a severe thunderstorm arrived.

    This thing works as advertised. Back on the 18th of this month (June) this thing was saying
    "Tornado" and about 15 to 20 minutes later, the National Weather Service issued a Tornado
    Warning for Butler County here in Ohio and it was moving South East toward me in Warren County. Yes, it does work!

    I can always hear lightning strikes in my state on 75 meters. They make a burst of static. During nets you can tell where the storms are by people who check in early so they can shut down for lightning protection.

    Excellent video with mix of actual storm approaching, the Tornado Alert, iphone ap, and weather radio! The only thing missing was hopping in a tornado chase vehicle lol! Well done indeed!

    Thanks for the update! I have one of these too, having picked it up at Hamcation in February. Mine hasn't yet gone off yet. I'm on the other side of the state, in Apollo Beach. I'm glad to know it works!

    i got this device the day after i seen this second video you did.
    i had a lot of issues with conductive EMI, not the fault of the device, but the inability to use the provided AC wall adapter with 240volt and the interference coming though the grid.
    After finding a low noise adapter for 240volts, using "B1212S-1W" 12V DC-DC Isolated Power Converter & a Ferrite choke; i was able to eliminate the noise.
    I can now say it works well here down under in Australia too, we had a storm come though on the 5th of Feb and the device woke me up, alarming with Severe Storm well before it got here.
    After the storm, on my VicEmergency app; i could see lots of call outs for flood, down trees and storm damage about 30kms away in Rosebud, Victoria.
    Ive also found it runs fine on a 12volt Caravan Battery when camping just fine, so i can say its a good device for no Internet areas, as it dose not use Wifi/4G
    cheers for the heads up

    Spent time with my Ham Buddies this weekend. We were working on my computer and IC 718 to get WSJT-X up and working. It's still not logging correctly but while you were uploading this video, I logged a contact in Hawaii. Thanks for your videos. 10m is NOT dead. Enjoy your rig. 73

    I just got my Tornado Alert. We face Iowa up here in NW Illinois. I was setting it up and after a couple of tries at a good location, it said Lightning! with a couple of bars. Our sky was sunny and clear with a few clouds. I thought the machine was faulty, but it continued with thesame readout. So I looked a bit closer towards the West and just above and along the Western horizon was a line of dark clouds. Sure enough, there was a storm approaching. After checking the radar, there was a good sized storm headed our way. This device gave us plenty of time to scure our radio. If I hadn't seen your videos, I would have never seen this. Thank you. de KD9NGU

    My beagle, who is terrified of a thunder, can tell me 30 minutes to an hour ahead, if a storm is coming. Which is good for us, but the big problem is when the storm is here! She can freak out. Escape the dog pen, tear up stuff trying to get inside the house, etc.
    But, even she has false alarms too!

    That is a great device. I live in NV and at times we do get severe weather. Lot of air to ground lighting. That would a handy device to have. Thanks for sharing the video. 73 Clark KG7LOI

    I ordered one right after your first video. The first time it went off was AFTER the storm had passed and was 4 miles east of me. It has since gone off a couple of times in advance of the storm. I think I need to find a better location in my house for it because it now won't pass the start up test. I haven't given up yet.

    • @HamRadioConcepts
      @HamRadioConcepts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I found that to be tricky, dont position it or try to mask it to get it to pass the test, or the initial noise floor will be way too high to detect lightning. Plasma TVs, radio gear, wifi, things that could cause EMI can throw it off.

    • @wushock92
      @wushock92 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HamRadioConcepts Thanks. Gives me some ideas. There is a Bluetooth speaker near by that doesn't really need to be there. Having an S5 to S7 noise floor doesn't help much either. LOL

      Phillip, I am a dealer of Tornado Alert. This is the only quirk about them....finding the right place. How do I know? I experienced it. I've been involved in weather forecasting a long time, this is the best thing on the market for advanced warning!

    I dig your videos and subscribed cause of your style on how you teach the complexity of the ham in simple ways that the average Joe that just got licensed can understand. My buddy on the east cost also got a baofeng cheapo and we wanna talk to each other. We can connect to our local repeaters .......and now what do we do? We dont have DMR and dont have mentors. Can you please do a video on long long distance communications?

    A couple of my local news weather tv stations have a weather app that includes lightning with distance in miles/feet, had several strikes within 200ft of my base station. There is also a app called “ My Lightning Tracker” that works pretty good.

      Im taking it has some sort of lightening detector and a pressure sensor to notice pressure dropping from a mesocyclone for the tornado alert, can be done with two very simple circuits. I think it appears to be a nice thought they came up with. Have not bought one, but now that I see people are happy with theirs it will get added to the arsenol.
