    *Guide below*
Hi folks! Seeing so many people having problems with this scenario I thought I would replay it on Hardest for the current patch and I would do some testing on lower difficulties to understand better your issues. For the replay on Hardest difficulty on the latest patch I can confirm that the strategy that I followed on the video still works. Regarding the tests on lower difficulties, I can confirm what you have been mentioning that the lower difficulties feel too-hard. Not only that, I could not see any difference (at least regarding the first 5min of gameplay) between Hardest and any of the other difficulties, which emphasizes how bad the difficulty level adjustment for this level is, at the moment. Therefore, I thought I would share with you some tips on how to beat this scenario. Unfortunately I have issues with my computer and I am unable to record in a quality that I feel would be appropriate for the channel at the moment, which is why I am going to write the tips here instead of making a video. Here we go:
    1. It is extremely important that as soon as the scenario starts you start moving your priest North until you encounter the river crossing, at which point you'll move East towards the "yellow" village. Pay attention while moving your priest and look for some "yellow" hunter half-way to "yellow's" town center and start the conversion immediately. Depending on the angle that you approach, you might be able to lay your priest behind a small group of trees or berries which will serve as a barrier between your priest and the enemy villager, in case it decides to come towards your priest to try to kill it.
    2. If there happen to be several villagers in the area where the villager you are trying to convert is, they will sometimes (surprisingly not always) all rally at your priest and try to kill it. Once you have started the conversion and the villagers are coming towards you there is no going back. If you are lucky, you will convert the villager fast enough to be able to move your monk away from the incoming villagers and you might be able to get away. If you are not lucky I am afraid they will kill your priest and the best thing to do at this point is to restart the scenario since it will be really challenging to continue with a single villager.
    3. As soon as you convert your first villager, build your Town Center nearby in a resource rich area (for example the one that I used at the video) and once the Town Center is built make sure you can keep training villagers continuously from it. You will need around 25 villagers between converted and trained in order to advance to the next age at a decent speed without handicapping your late game.
    4. Make sure to use your priest in the most efficient way possible. Pay attention to the conversion cool-down and get ready to convert the next unit before the cool-down ends so that there is no idle time. By the time that you will have converted around 5 villagers from "yellow" it is very likely that "red" will pay you a visit with some axemen and/or slingers. Build your base around your Town Center so that the buildings can be used as barriers which will difficult the pathing of enemy units trying to attack your priest. Your priest can convert from behind those "barriers" so make use of that. Always convert the most dangerous unit. Axemen are usually the priority but if from the enemy group of units attacking there is a scout, focus that one so that your priest can survive. Otherwise, it is likely to die. You will get the most value from your priest during the first 18min of the game. Afterwards, the value will drop substantially since "red" will train only chariots and priests, which are very difficult to convert (you cannot convert priests).
    5. Your priority is to reach the Tools Age by min 15, with a Granary ready and hopefully already gathering stone. If you have idle military units during that time, use them to attack "yellow" villagers so that it is unable to develop into a threat.
    6. Once you have reached the Tools Age, you need to rush to the river crossing and build a wall and several towers (just like in the video). Make sure to research the necessary technologies at the Granuary and to gather the necessary stone for it. Start with the wall then build the towers.
    7. IMPORTANT: By minute 18, "Red" will have reached the Bronze Age and the Chariot and Priest spam will begin. If you have not managed to wall and build towers on the river crossing as mentioned on tip 6 you will be in for a very rough ride. You might be able to survive the first few waves but you will suffer greatly if "Red" has free access to your economy and gathering points. Do not let that happen!
    8. After walling and fortifying the river crossing focus on booming your economy and taking "yellow" out of the game. Use any Axemen you may have converted or, if you have not converted any, train one or two, and harass "yellow" villagers until "yellow" decides to resign. Do not waste time attacking houses or the town center, it is not necessary to destroy them for "yellow" to resign and it will be much faster to kill the villagers. Keep improving your economy with the upgrades on the Market and try to reach the Bronze Age when you can.
    9. Once you have reached the Bronze Age, improve your towers at the Granary and increase their range by researching the second Axe upgrade at the Market. This will allow your towers to reach the enemy Chariot Archers that were able to out-range you until now. Continue to work on your economy and build towards ensuring a big supply of wood and food and towards improving your own Chariots. Research the armor and attack upgrades at the Storage Pit and research Nobility at the Government Center.
    10. Build several Stables and Archery Ranges near the river crossing and once you have at least 8 of these buildings, build a wall enclosing the entire space so that no enemy units can have access to your economy. You might want to wall the gold on the south to prevent "red" villagers from gathering it.
    11. Reach your population limit by training mostly Chariots and a few Chariot Archers. Make sure that they are fully upgraded. When ready, delete a wall segment from the crossing to allow your units to march into "red"'s territory and start the raiding. At this point I recommend giving all your Stables a control group so you can quickly manage them and continuously train new Chariots as the other die in battle. Defeat the units coming towards the crossing but avoid dispersing your units. You want to clean them up fast and then move to the enemy's economy. Do not waste time at this point in destroying towers, focus on villagers and enemy units and try to stay away from the towers range when possible. This phase will last for several tens of minutes, might be even 30min before you manage to make any progression but you will be weakening "red"'s economy substantially.
    12. When possible, move into "red"'s side of the crossing and build many stables there so that your reinforcements take less time to join the battle. Keep focusing on the enemy's economy and kill any priests that show up to convert your chariots. You should notice that the enemy is unable to produce as many units as before and this will give you a clear sign of progress. At this point you can focus on destroying "red"'s Town Centers to prevent it from rebuilding its economy or training new villagers. After the Town Centers, focus on the Unit Production facilities (Stables, Archery Ranges, and Temple) if there are still units being trained from them.
    13. Once the enemy is unable to produce almost anything, you can build a Siege Workshop and train one or two Stone Throwers to deal with the towers. Or simply continue massing your charriots and destroying the towers with them. By this time it will very soon be GG!
I hope all of these tips are helpful for you. Good luck!

I can never convert a solitary yellow villager without a million more appearing out of the unexplored to kill my priest.
Edit: Finally managed to do it using your strats! :D I managed to convert three villagers, which was enough to get the ball rolling. After that, it went just like the video showed. It was a bit touch and go once I attacked the Sumerians, because no matter how many calvary archers I used, I just couldn’t break through their lines of sentry towers that turned my calvary into Swiss cheese. Didn’t help that their priests kept converting my units. My wood resources were starting to run dry, but the Sumerians were too. Then, I came up with an idea to make a horde of Axemen, since they were cheap and pretty strong, that all Zerg-rushed the towers and brought each one down in seconds. Power in numbers, as they say. Soon, the Sumerians were completely overrun and I won not long after. The entire map took 4 hours 10 minutes, but I got there in the end :)

After watching this video I am now truly convinces there is a bug in my game and I unfortunately can not complete this quest. I try to convert the yellow guys and a swarm of villagers attack my monk with bones. Every convert leads to my monks almost instant death. When I can manage to get one villager, of course either the red soldiers or the yellow villagers kill my monk, but when I do get one and try to build, with in 5 minutes I get attacked by a swarm of red guys and 3 minutes after that another swarm and I have nothing. I have tried this 19x now and easy mode does not help because easy mode makes it harder than standard, I made it further on standard.
I do not understand why your monk is not getting instanta killed and mine is.

Hello UTC7513 UTR7513, and welcome to the channel. I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the scenario. The truth is I had to replay it many times before I could get a decent enough start (the first 3 min are very important in this one) to actually play it all the way through. The developers have tweaked the AI so much that the difficulty levels do not seem to be what they should be. It is very important that the first conversion that you get it is without your priest being injured. After that, try converting from behind a forest or a building to block the enemy villager or units path. If some unit is coming to attack your priest and you attack it with something else, like a villager of yours, it is very likely that unit will switch target from the priest to the other unit attacking. Use that to your advantage. Also, build your houses and other buildings like a wall around your town center for easy defence and make sure you wall the river crossing before min 15 because, at least at hardest difficulty, that's when red reaches bronze age and will start the chariot spam. I hope that helps! Good luck

    • @taylorhutchings4612

I had the same thing on a couple tries. I just got lucky and beat it in a 2 hour marathon though by bumrushing the yellow village and converting about 6 villagers. Then I spammed food gathering until I could get 6 club guys and was able to take out the village with them. To beat red I had to get 3 stables and an archery range and just crank out upgraded chariots as fast as possible because they only require food and wood. I thought I was going to lose a bunch of times but once red runs out of gold and stone deposits he will waste all his resources trying to get villagers to your side so if you have all your military bases sending new units to the land bridge you can wittle down all his villagers. Don't get any infantry other than the initial guys to take out yellow because red's chariot archers will just kite them. Every time I hit max pop I sent all my chariots to wreak havoc and then just keep repeating it that way, took quite a few waves to finally kill all his defenses. Just play it like this guy and do lots of saves in the first 10 minutes since they decide whether your can win or not, took my about 10 tries to finally get it.

This was a life saver. Big takeaways that changed my game: 1) using villagers to take out axemen, slingers, and scouts early on made a huge difference. 2) building the wall on the river asap is a must... I learned that not even 12 villagers can take out a chariot once they start coming. 3) Attacking Sumer's economy (e.g., houses, villagers) is a much better use of resources than simply trading chariots, since they reproduce at a high rate.
It was especially tricky for me because I didn't advance in time to stop Sumer from mining their southern stone area, so by the time I infiltrated them, they had like 15 towers (way more than in the video). I ended up exhausting literally every tree on the map just to take them down. And to add further insult, after I destroyed every single building and military unit, it still wouldn't complete, even after scouring every corner of the map, so I used the die cheat code and that was it.
    Yeah it was ridiculous.

The red team has unlimited resource of monks.
Everytime time i create a big army and go to attack, the monks (about 4,5) spoil everything.
Now i am left with just one stone thrower but large amount of food and wood.
I have built a long wall inside their territory and slowly extending the wall inside step by step.
And using the stone thrower from inside the wall to destroy their towers and buildings
      This way their monks dont
work and everytime they come close, i use archers to attack them

Thanks a lot man, I've been doing this mission dozens of times using different strategies like scout ship, stone thrower or clubman rush attack red and all failed. I think the “wall block” is very critical cause red is always economically faster than me and not to mention players need to take care of yellow and catching up with red.
I end up going east and converting some yellow villagers, then using clubman rush attack yellow and eliminate yellow at 23min.(And of course I need to defend against the red axemen attack from the west). Then I use wall blocks to grow my economy and at around 55min I can finally catch up with the red economy. I go west to occupy the stone and gold by wall block and sentry towers. I just keep building sentry towers toward the west because that's what I think best about handling priests. Stone throwers will be easily converted by priests and chariot plus sentry towers fighting against red better. After all it took me 2hr and 18 min to finish this mission.
Thanks for the strategy, it really helps a lot.👍👍👍

A really cool strategy that I use for this is to after making villagers and a base where yellow is, to build 2 docks on yellow's side of the river where the shallows are - if placed correctly this completely walls out red before they can get any units in (even the first wave of axemen). From there build towers and convert units

I did beat this one for the first time today holy crap it was on standard and it took me a couple hours to progress! I converted yellow and they resigned pretty quickly. I built a wall and towers on the river. I should've built a wall in front of the gold by red that would've slowed them down tremendously. I also built a small navy to just pester red. But OH MY GOD red would not stop. They were like ants! The villagers kept coming and just kept taking them out over and over. Red had at least 8 town centers. Funny enough, it used to be a really easy scenario on the release version of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition (I have an old video on that, if you're curious). However, after the release of patch 9, the developers totally messed up the difficulty system and broke the scenario. It has one of the most proficient and hardest AI to beat in the whole game and it has that on all difficulty levels (even Easiest), which makes no sense. Congratulations on beating it! There should be an achievement for that.🏆

Watching this helped as I learned a few things that appears to be vital:
    - Build the first town more to the east.
    - Build a wall with a few towers near the shallow water.
When playing again, I only watched the first part of this video. At that point I didn't knew there was a lack of stone/gold-resources and that apparently you can delete your own wall. So my approach, with boats, was different. But these two points I learned from your video definitely helped me complete this map.

When I play this scenario yellow's villagers instantly attack my monk and then my town. Once I get a play through where I establish a town, red already has chariots. I wall up and slaughter red's chariots with out casualties until I have a massive army. Once I attack I find red with another army of chariots and priests. I slaughter his forces and destroy his stables and temples, but for every one killed two take its place. Finally with gold and stone purged from the map for hours, the last of my gold intense units die. Red fails to break through my walls but I can't attack either. Red still has more chariots and monks. Last attempt my army had a three to one kill to death ratio, including the deaths of my early army and villager to chariots before I could build a wall. If I guess at my late game kill to death ratio, I would say it is four or five to one.

Hello Ermenher and welcome to the channel. I assume you're playing at the hardest difficulty as well. This scenario seems to have a much better AI than most of the others to be honest. To win the scenario at the late game I would recommend trying to lure red's army into a place that you have walled to be a maze and it's full of towers. If it's not completely walled, the AI will try to walk through it while it gets shot by the towers. Also, do not focus mainly on the enemy military, try to strike side attacks on the economy. The AI has a harder time rebuilding the economy than the military. Finally, use chariots yourself so you don't have to rely on units costing gold. Chariots are resistant to conversion and melee ones have bonus attack vs priests. I hope that helps and you can win the scenario, it seems that you have had to replay it many times already. Good luck!

Now it seems like anyone you try to convert (even a villager) will try to attack your priest instead of running away, it is damn near impossible to convert something without him getting hurt. also just to make sure, red would attack you even if you've done nothing to them? Now this is gonna make it almost impossible for me to play, and I'm playing on moderate
Edit: forgot to mention but if you try to convert someone with others nearby do they just swarm your priest? or does it only happen if you are being greedy and convert too many units? because I had that happen (tried to convert a yellow villager with others nearby and had my priest killed and failed)
One more thing, now it seems like you HAVE to start with the yellows now, because the moment you convert a red villager they'd send axemen after you, and they can somehow always find you no matter where you go

    1. convert all yellow villagers ASAP and he will resign, so you can claim his half of the map.
    2. build a lot of warhips to defend the ford connecting red's territory with yours.
    3. send some villagers to mine gold on the red's territory. There is very few gold on the yellow (now yours) side of the map so you need to "steal" from the red's half.

Hello MinaxSocietas and welcome to the channel! Yes, most of the time I play on fast speed (which was the default speed for competitive multiplayer back in the days). However, the speed increase or decrease is proportional for all units. Therefore, the monk moves always relatively slow compared to the villagers, no matter what speed you play at. I would recommend you try and start the conversion on an enemy villager when you only have one enemy villager on your line of sight and as soon as it shows (do not start the conversion once the villager is close to you or has a direct path towards your monk, since it will be quite easy for it to rush your monk down). The most you need is three villagers. Try not to wander too close to the yellow settlement, as they’ll have all the villagers rush you down. Try to use the trees as a natural shield until you convert a villager and recharge your faith. Three villagers is preferable, any more and getting to the Tool Age becomes that much easier, since you don’t need 50 more food to train another villager. The start is definitely the hardest part, as a great number of things can go wrong at any time. But keep to these tips and the video’s instructions and soon, you’ll get it :)

Hello Rolando Topete, welcome to the channel! The key to avoiding yellow villagers during conversion is to start the conversion immediately after the unit you want to convert enters your LoS (Line of Sight) and make sure there are no other villagers nearby that will team against you. It is also a matter of luck sometimes since the AI can either choose to run away or to attack your priest with the villager. Regarding the destruction of walls and killing of own villagers, all you need to do is select the building that you want to destroy/villager you want to kill and press the "delete" key on your keyboard. Hope that helps. Cheers!

      @gruntgg  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello Universum, and welcome to the channel! Unfortunately, the constant tweaks in the game's AI have not been followed by a check on the campaign's difficulty levels. Somehow, this scenario seemed to have taken a bigger hit than many others in the campaigns. The AI seems to perform similarly between the different difficulty levels in this one, for some reason. With all the difficulty levels being similar, the only way to go is to try to approach the scenario as if it would be in hardest difficulty. Here are some of the tips that I mentioned to other players and some new ones below.
Also, build your houses and other buildings like a wall around your town center for easy defense and make sure you wall the river crossing before min 15 because, at least at hardest difficulty, that's when red reaches bronze age and will start the chariot spam.
      Some new tips:
Once red's path is blocked and you are able to hold its armies, make sure that yellow is out of the game if it wasn't already earlier. Then, your focus should be on booming and maxing out your economy and technologies until your chariots are fully upgraded, which is when you are ready to take the fight to red. Mix melee chariots with chariot archers and go for raids on red's economy. Even if your entire raiding party dies, still focus on killing villagers rather than attacking military units or buildings since the AI has a harder time rebuilding a balanced economy than it has with rebuilding military units. Ensure that you have multiple stables and archery ranges ready to produce non-stop units and keep raiding red. Once its economy has taken a big blow you can try to go in and destroy its town center and, afterwards, its military buildings.
I hope that helps! Good luck

couldn't win this scenario for anything but eventually did but had to use the resource cheats to get enough towers in place to stop being overwhelmed, impossible without doing that ,tried everything. Tried for hours but constantly overwhelmed wherever i set up camp , i found you need towers to keep them out while building your forces which you cant do without cheat añd even then it was a close run thing. Tried following this way 17 times ,still overwhelmed every time, definitely something wrong with this scenario, doesn't matter easy or hardest level its exactly the same. Even then you have build multiple armies to finally destroy them and your troops don't kill their villagers automatically.

I bought AoE:DE as I thought it was a redo of the original, I'm pretty gutted as it isn't but pleased as well...weird eh!.
Anyhoo, even on easy the monk converts 1 villager and then I get swarmed, monk gets dead and I have 1 villager left alone to do all the bloody work. By the time I have got 2 more villagers (that's from 1 being trained with the 50 food you already have and 1 from collecting foodstuffs from either hunting gazelle or berry bushes) the yellows build a granary right by my town centre..not close but right by it, then clubmen come in and start kicking off, and if the clubmen don't come in they build a tower right next to my town centre, and by right next to I mean actually touching the town centre, then all hell breaks loose. D'ya reckon they are just trolling the shit out of me or not. I think they are tbh.

      @Mikeb1001 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You have to go for the one guy that is on his own from the yellows at the start, convert him, and then move your priest out of sight of anything yellow (including buildings) to re-spirit. Hopefully your one guy will have built the town centre, meaning that you can then train a second with the food you have, and convert another yellow to make three and run away again. I managed to convert 5 yellows before my priest died, giving me a good start as by this point I had enough guys to produce 50 food fairly rapidly and start cutting wood and building houses at the same time. Once the priest died I build a barracks shortly after and was able to start going after yellow before they built the tower.

I have played the game for the standard difficulty level. I had same difficulty people have. A lot of times when I convert one villager other band up and kill my priest. Here are however a few tips. Try to get a villager alone wandering, in other words don't go to a place where there are bunch of Akadian villagers. Try to adjust your distance to villagers. If you got a single villager save. If you got another villager save again. If you got a third villager yet save again. At first concentrate on getting as much food as possible in forms of berries. And again at first, get some more villagers with that food. maybe 7-8 maybe 10. Of course you also need to build housing.
This will leave you vulnerable to Sumerian attacks. Akadians don't attack but Sumerians do, and they do it viciously. (They must be hating Babylonians, even though in history Babylonians admired their culture, so unfair.) Anyway the way to deal with it is your priest. Fortunately initial attack units are less powerful, you can handle a few hits. Meanwhile use your priest to convert their units. Yes if you do that units will stop what they do and follow you. But place your priest strategically and make it difficult for other units to get to it. This way you can convert two or three horseman, and if you are lucky a few other units. They can hold your town for a while. Don't forget to heal the units.
Then once you are done with producing enough villagers, and here once again, you should decide when it is OK, but the main trick is observe how fast food is accumulating, well once you are done, wait. Wait the food to accumulate, advance the tool age.
Here is the problem. Once you are at the tool age, Sumerians will advance to Bronze Age, they they will wipe out us, the primitive Babylonians with their chariots. Initially we weren't able to convert enough villages to advance fast enough and now it seems we are going to pay for it, except we have a secret weapon. Well, take one villager and let it build a dock to the river. Send vast majority of your villagers to collect wood. You will need A LOT OF IT. And then well start building scout ships. Yes they are your secret weapon. Build them block the river passage, send all military units you have to block the passage two. Start the passage as if your life depends on it. And in fact it does. Even in Bronze Age, you will need time before you can produce something as fast and strong as the chariots, so even a single chariot passing the river will be able to create a lot of damage.
Get market place, and then a military building, I would suggest you build the military building right next to the river crossing, of course on your side. Archers or horseman would be my choice. Get your priest there. Convert Sumerian villagers that are trying to cross. After all Sumerians will start to pay back this way. Sumerians will try desperately to cross. But if you have 10 12 ships and continuously rebuild, they won't be able to.
By this time you can relax a little, accumulate food get to Bronze Age, get the advancement of ship technology, which will turn your scout ships into galleys and magically all your ships will advance and become even more unstoppable. Now you can utilize the stone and gold reserves on your side of the village, build other military structures and a temple, get a priest, make your surviving priest to heal, get ground military units. At least you can turn into one enemy you ignored Akkadians. It is unfair in my opinion, I would rather finish Sumerians and then convert all their villagers, but you need their resources. (As the Fallout game would say, war. never changes)
Manage your ships and units at the river when Sumerians attack, your ships even do very well on their own surprisingly but if you manage them you can use them efficiently. Never let them to go too far away from the river crossing.
At least you have a solid position, with Sumerians tons of resources wasted in chariots that attempt to cross the river. This is my position now. I think finishing the game will be easy from this point.

i not understand ... the start ... i played on standard the villagers always go with all villagers to attack my priest if i not catch them solo far away from the others , why they did not attack you? ... and with this slow speed and finally made a base i make towerwalk to enemy base and every minute there spawn 10-15 bow wagons / melee wagons and i instantly produce in 4 buildings and can not kill base ,... ( my gold runned out the only 2 catapults i built was destroyed )
edit: ahh never mind i made it even with this shit, just made few more researches(loaded an older save), but towerwalk should not be the way to win an age of empires mission :p had to do it in mission 2 or 3 (not remember) to kill yellow enemy too even if its not nessecary to kill the yellow enemy :p (the artefact mission)

He sends multiple units directly at it including the scout and even after you block them from it they can send ranged units, chariots and more
This is why this game has built in cheat codes jesus

Here is what happens in my game, i run up no matter which civ i grab a villager from, before ive even build my TC they come with more vills in some cases all of them to beat the hell out of my monk. If that doesnt happen they will run in with 3 axemen sometimes from both enemy civs no matter if ive encouter both. What you show here does not happen ever in my game, hell the 1st convert storms into my priest and beats him to half.. not 20s later another comes in and finishes the monk if i try to convert that guy too.
Also you convert them REALLY fast compared to what happened in my game, using right click or the convert hotkey, doesnt matter.

The fucking imbalance in this game is already bored. On this map, the enemy endlessly reproduces any units. Including expensive monks. But what about the limited resources and the need for the expansion of new territories? He can sit on a tiny heel and spawn any cooldown units. Enrages.

    • @Mikeb1001
      @Mikeb1001 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The reds advance ages very quickly so one can only assume they are well established and have reserves. It's frustrating at first but you can starve them of resources eventually, you just have to get it right. My tactics was to litter the bit you walk across at the start with sentry towers when I moved back over that side and they will take out their supply of villagers slowly. Less villagers means less rebuilding power when you attack. Also I built a dock and used a fleet of about 10 ships to take out the farms and 2 town centres closest to the river. Destroying the farms, the town centres and the villagers working them massively inhibits their ability to generate food and villagers, which in turn slows down how many military units they can produce (not to mention the god damn priests!) if you stop them rebuilding temples because you've killed all their villagers, you're halfway there!

Hello Anton Tunguska, and welcome to the channel! In its current state, this mission is very challenging and, specially with the difficulty settings not working well for this one, it feels very frustrating to play. It is a shame since this was probably the most iconic mission of AoE (although it was way too easy in the original game, in my opinion).

    • @gruntgg
      @gruntgg  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hello @Petqn and welcome to the channel. I can totally understand your frustration. Indeed, this scenario in particular, is completely broken as the AI always plays at maximum difficulty regardless of the level of difficulty you choose. Not only that, but they abuse their advantage quite explicitly (like chasing down your priest when it's outside their line of sight). In AoE2 DE Return of Rome the scenario is again very easy, just like it was in the original AoE. I plan to cover that in a future video.
