I can’t appreciate you enough for putting out that great info out there bud really .. cuz now I’m going to hold off on getting my authority honestly . Thank you so much stay safe and always good watching and listing to your advices and getting great valuable information real talk !!
Sammy you’re the most informative person on this subject that I’ve found so far. Thanks so much man. I’m still company driving but i’m switching to another company that offered me a much better deal while I gain more experience and work out my plan. You’re the best bro. Feel like I owe you lol.
Be careful over here at LS they will tell you they are giving you "extra money" but really they are just moving money around. Sometimes they will take a few hundred off the line haul and move it over to the fuel surcharge. Just make sure when they say they are giving you extra that the line haul stays the same or they are adding it to driver assist. Driver assist Landstar doesn't take a cut out of that money or lay over pay. A lot of time these agents try to be slick lol you gotta watch em.
The agents aren’t sly, they just do not understand the breakdown. 9 out 10 agents have no idea how the breakdown actually works, nor understand what accesorials landstar gets a cut of and which they don’t. And any bco that falls for that doesn’t either.
Glad I watched your vid Man. I was wondering if I should grab my own authority and learn as go. Can’t wait to see what happens I threw the app in last night.
The 300 load u were looking at on the BCO board, if you would have sit there and called most of them, 50 to 70% are not really available... sometimes 10 agents will post the same load.... lots of times the paste a load form Dat or internet truckstop board... and alot of those loads are not available... Your better off doing what your doing... LS is a good training ground... but is very frustrating sometimes....
Landstar agents are not posting loads off DAT or internet truckstop, they are ALSO POSTING them on DAT and Truckstop. Those loads are approved by the shipper to double broker so they can load a broker truck like this guy. FYI , double brokering is NOT illegal if the shipper approves that. When the shipper requires “Exclusive”, that means it can only go on a Landstar truck, or a Mercer truck, or whoever their carrier is. The loads you see in both places are not exclusive. Also, anyone that can find freight can become a Landstar agent. If this guy was really smart, and had such great contacts at CH Robinson, he could become a Landstar agent, and stay at home and get 8% of every load he books. Agents get 8%, if they go over their 8% it has to be split with landstar 50/50. That’s to BCO’s, if they are loading a broker truck, the ethical percentage is 15%. I worked in a Landstar agents office back in 2007-2010. Most of what this guy is shoveling is WRONG. He has no clue how this business actually works and id bet he’ll end up losing his ass.
Here is a cool idea, _"Consider buying some promotional pens with your logo and company phone number. Some truckers have built a client lists by simply leaving a pen (or more) every time they visit a shipper. Before long, your prospective clients will have your contact information._ _It’s a simple way to get clients to remember you. However, be mindful of any non compete agreements you have when doing this."_ Article is here (www.comcapfactoring.com/blog/how-to-find-trucking-contracts/)
That is a great idea and im a big fan of marketing. Shirts, Hats, Pens and Business cards play a huge part in Branding yourself and Business. I haven't as of yet because i’m not interesed in anything i’m dedicated to. I’m liking the freedom right now. Thanks for sharing PS
Hey bud I was wondering if you can do a contrast video to your " land star before Authority" and if you still feel the same after the tools that have become available to you today about a year later. would Landstar still be a good choice. The reason I ask is because I'm on the fence with my first truck trying to make a good decision and after watching you for some time it does seem like the tools for catching good loads has improved. Thanks
Just the learning curve has improved over the past year, there is a lot to the carrier side. You have to know how each broker/carrier works with booking and invoicing vs. being leased to just now carrier and knowing their system. I would still go Landstar, you'll get the tools you'll need to set out on your own. Plus my buddies over there make make just as good as I can. It's all in booking em
Sam O I’m leaning more toward your own MC numbers now I’m further along. But you need the capital. If you have that covered after the purchases of truck and trailer. I say go authority. More freedom and more freight
I was going to Lease onto landstar but! Their % per load is way off. The company I'm leased to is 80% per load and I book all my own loads. Landstar double book loads from other companies. I pulled a load for them and come to find out the load was JB Hunt load. So that means if JBH was paying 5k then LS took their 20+% off that.
I'd start with a smaller broker that has their direct customers. ( not a leach broker just trying to haul other peoples accounts) Be a man of your word. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Haul their loads as if it were your direct account. If you do a great job and represent them well, they will love you. They just want their customer to be happy with on time appointments and a driver that is well rounded and professional.
Just a quick question, if you go to Landstar and build relationships there how would you use them once you get your own authority? Don't Landstar brokers just broker for Landstar BCO?..... Thanks Sammy and love your videos, I've been driving for 35 years, 27 of them at the same company (UPS) and when I retire in a couple years I'm going to buy my own truck and go run over the road just for fun, I started out 35 years ago as a OTR driver and though I won't need the money so to speak the last few years before I sit home and build bird houses till I die will OTR, hobby trucking? farewell tour? whatever you want to call it loll..... Keep up the videos they're great just curious about the connections jumping from Landstar to your own authority and how that would work? Trying to watch all the videos I can on the business end of being an owner operator, I've made such a good living here I'll be able to buy a brand new Kenworth W900 or W990 cash but the nuts and bolts of the paperwork is what I'm trying to learn... Thanks Matt
MakeCents Trucking Show ... thank you sir... i really enjoy your videos... me and my wife drive team and are saving money for a down payment on a truck from lone mountain and we're going to try to lease on with landstar... all because of your advice... when it goes down i will be sure to give you the credit... thank you for sharing your wisdom
I got that one lucked in def in 6 month but any suggestions of a company to start with straight out school. I'm here in the DMV area. Thanks you again.
Hey good day , just a quick question scrolling through your videos watching old and new just grasping all the info I can for I'm looking to get into the industry in a couple months and to be totally honest I aspire to follow in your path lol sorry I'm rambling , but this was a 3 years old video , my question being with what you've learnt these years gone by would you still recommend a lease program VS O/O ? Or rather whats your take on the subject with your gained knowledge on O/O?
Co-brokering is different from double brokering It is important to note that the following double brokering methods are different than the common practice of co-brokering. Co-Brokering happens when a freight broker is permitted to assign the freight to another broker. In a co-brokering scenario, both parties involved have broker authority and an agreement that all parties have signed off on. Co-brokered loads are safe to run and common in the industry
From what I've seen with my friends at LS vs. me is.. It's hit and miss with higher rates. Sometimes them, sometimes me. Where it's more beneficial for me is with volumes. They may be in an area with 20 loads, where as I have access to 200. I sit way less :)
just curious are they paying you the extra hundred because of your driving history, such as is that guy saying i got this driver that has a awesome driving record and hes willing to haul you load and your getting that extra hundred because of of your history. new to this subject because of your channel.
Man I figured it was some shit going on with them loadboards..... Man I don't trust ppl.... The company I'm with is pdp trucking and I'm always getting cheap stuff... Now they call owner operators BTO and I don't know the difference but man I know the market is bad but he'll it's not even worth moving.... $1 a mile I'm not moving so I feel stuck... And another thing seems like whenever I Wana get back home it's always some stuff... The loads are already booked or pays less as shit.... I don't Kno bro... Do u think u can help out with this bro? Lol thanx
Own auth...its good. Under auth..ok. You should know whatever freight your hauling to where ever its going the cost already. If you don't...don't take the load, this looking at all this stuff just clouds the issue. When you know...you know.
Your theory is very flawed. I worked in a Landstar agents office from 2007-2010. I have some really valuable information for you. Just because you make friends with agents at Landstar, does NOT guarantee ANY of them can load you as a broker truck on the same lane. This depends solely on the shipper . FYI, double brokering loads is NOT illegal as long as the shipper is aware and approves. Regardless what anyone thinks. Doesn’t mean illegal double brokering doesn’t happen but not as often as you think. More FYI, a Landstar agent gets 8% of everything they book to bco’s, and up to 15% of what they put on broker trucks such as yourself. ANYTHING over that is a 50/50 split with Landstar. Example: load pays $2500, agent gets a broker truck to pull it for $1500, the $1,000 you think he just pocketed, NO, he only gets $500 and Landstar gets $500. Fact: Landstar does the billing, NOT the agent, so agents are extremely limited to any flexibility. Now, the reason you see 10 different agents with the same load is simple. 1 of 2 reasons. Either 1) it’s a broker load (CH Robinson, CLX logistics, Echo logistics, J B Hunt logistic etc etc whoever the broker is..they network the freight to many carriers and other brokerages. 2) The shipper has no direct agent and simply works with multiple agents AND brokers, This is why you’ll see CRST Malone, and Jones motor, and a whole host of carriers with the same load on DAT and Truckstop as well as 10 different Landstar agents. The Landstar agent I worked for was also an agent for Jones Motor, Admiral Merchants, Green tree, and as well as Landstar. We could take loads from any of one of our agencies and put on another agencies trucks. We could NOT load broker trucks with their own authority because that would be double brokering. But I could and did pull Landstar loads off the Landstar board and load Jones trucks, or Admiral etc and visa versa all day long. We had direct CH Robinson contacts as well as CRST Malone which had a HUGE D.O.D. account and theyd throw us 200-300 loads at a time which we posted on all our agencies boards. We would have to call CRST to check availability on every booking because 20 other agents may be scrambling for the same freight. And to be clear, CRST’s DOD account would only let them broker to larger carriers, not to owner ops with own authority. There is a credit scoring per capita that determines eligibility for being a qualifying carrier. Now a days CSA score also has a LARGE play on this as well, which as an individual, it’s really hard to maintain a good csa. Also new ICC #’s wouldn’t be consider either for high paying freight. So when starting out with a new ICC #, your odds of high paying freight are stacked against you until your established. If you can get that far before going broke. This is why 75% of new icc #’s Fail. My recommendation is this, If you have such a great contact at CH Robinson, you can get freight from them, become a landstar agent, get that 8%, put it on your own Landstar truck and get that 72% ( if you have your own trailer) , or 8% of every load you book to a BCO and stay home and count your money. There’s a lot you haven’t learned so far my friend. It doesn’t quite work the way your thinking. You will learn or go broke. I myself bought a truck after leaving that office and leased to Landstar. I’m quite happy with $7,000-$10,000 a week gross. I’ve averaged $2.18 a mi this year after fuel and after Landstar’s cut. That’s yo me in my pocket. I wouldn’t have your headache and no discount fuel bill and no discount tire bill for and signing up n a drug test consortium, and filing all Highway use tax, etc etc etc when Landstar does it all, has TONS of freight, and I’m banking every week. My brother had his authority for 22 years and gave it up 9 years ago to come to Landstar and you can’t pry him away. He’s banking too. Own authority is an ego thing man. If all your planning on doing is running off the broker boards and you don’t have a direct account with a shipper, NOT broker, but SHIPPER, you’ll benefit nothing. Be lucky to stay a float. Been doing this for 38 years and around it 55. Good luck 👍
Hey boss I see you have years of experience, knowledge, wisdom and understanding. My question to you is this. What would you recommend me as an investor (im not a driver) if I cash out on a Truck & Trailer (no payments). Should I lease my equipment to Landstar and put a driver in the truck ? Thx
EL CU/-\TE you'll need authority to be approved carrier. But to lease on I believe it's one year experience to lease on. And as long as you have a truck compliant to elogs.
I was with landstar for 9 years before I got my authority problem with your idea of going with landstar first is that a lot of the loads available to bco's are not brokerable meaning approved carriers cannot haul those loads 99 percent of the loads I did with landstar I can't do that's just how it is.
Yes sir thats right. Talked with some of them about those loads. One lady was like OMG how you get my number lol i told her my brother, then she said i can use you on some loads, but not all loads.
and the craziest shit is u got thousands of truck owners running for cheap companies for 86 cents to 90 cents. i know back in the 80s my grandpa ran box freight for 4 a mile average
Did you ever wonder why he called you back and gave me the extra $100 is because there Was a lot more on the table .Was a lot more on the table 10 sensible w**** is nothing you should it went for 90 cents more A mile
I haven't worked for LS but i have access to their bco load bord and they rates are wayyyyy better than spot market loads board DAT TS CY iTs CH UB JB SN etc etc etc LS rate... NJ to CA $7000+. Spot market same line $4500 or less of course rake out the 35% you still getting better rate than spot maket. Wtf. Do the math is all about numbers.
Chivi... I been at LS 2 years, and lots of the loads u see on bco board are call bait.... u call Agent, and he says... oh I need to call customer.. then he comes back and says, no they wont pay that rate... or what else will blow your mind.. THE CUSTOMER DOESN'T BOOK WITH LANDSTAR... what really... why is it on the board. The agent then feeds u some line of crap... DONT believe all you see at landstar.... The worst thing is when you book a load, then you get a new load alert, exactly same as load you just booked ,but cheaper rate..and a few minutes later they call you back and say.. OH SO SORRY.. LOAD CANCELED... but they really found someone to haul it cheaper.... It has happened to me more than once...
That broker felt sorry for you that's why he threw an extra money because you're naive to what people run those names for U-Haul cheap Freight you're hurting us learn faster
Rizzo Blizzo here's an idea, if you broker your own stuff, start making some videos to help get more out of a rate. If all you're going to do is throw your 2 cents and do nothing but talk.... no bro, your the one hurting us.
These guys running cheap freight they are killing the trucking industry. Only if they knew how much they are really getting for some of them loads they would realize they are running for free.
More like an outgoing introvert.
Solid content filled with positive substance 👍
Thanks

Oh let me add , not just off the bat CDL to O/O , I meant with a couple years of company driving , what you would do after that.
Co-brokering is different from double brokering
It is important to note that the following double brokering methods are different than the common practice of co-brokering. Co-Brokering happens when a freight broker is permitted to assign the freight to another broker. In a co-brokering scenario, both parties involved have broker authority and an agreement that all parties have signed off on. Co-brokered loads are safe to run and common in the industry
You are correct, and Double brokering is also permitted providing the shipper agrees to that as well.
Why are u running loads for a $1.50 a mile?🤔
It's all about the lane rate average
Do u have your own trailer???
yes
xpo logistics brokers have some good loads and rates are not bad
So if the spot market is strong, the independent does better than the bco. If it’s not strong, are you really making more than the bco?
From what I've seen with my friends at LS vs. me is.. It's hit and miss with higher rates. Sometimes them, sometimes me. Where it's more beneficial for me is with volumes. They may be in an area with 20 loads, where as I have access to 200. I sit way less :)
What kind of truck you got?

Keeping your obligations low beams lowering your life standards .They're the reason to lower your living standards to be able to take cheap rate

Your theory is very flawed. I worked in a Landstar agents office from 2007-2010. I have some really valuable information for you. If you have such a great contact at CH Robinson, you can get freight from them, become a landstar agent, get that 8%, put it on your own Landstar truck and get that 72% ( if you have your own trailer) , or 8% of every load you book to a BCO and stay home and count your money.
Thx
So u don’t need a mc number to work for land star
no, you'll use theirs
@@MakeCentsTrucking you need otr exp to goto landstar? i got 2yrs cdl exp but not otr
Kswania in Chicago is good. Snider choice too.
will these companys give loads to brand new owner opps ?
EL CU/-\TE some will yes. Others will require you to have authority 120 days to a year before hauling their loads.
MakeCents Trucking Show what does landstar require to sign up with them im getting a 2010 kw
EL CU/-\TE lease? Or carrier?
MakeCents Trucking Show with my own truck im guessing carrier !
EL CU/-\TE you'll need authority to be approved carrier. But to lease on I believe it's one year experience to lease on. And as long as you have a truck compliant to elogs.

What is BCO please?
Bro I am a company driver at present and my CDL is only 4 month old. I want to be owner operator. Kindly guide how I can do that?
Go through my archive. Plenty of how to advice 😆👌
The rates are better but they take 35 percent so it evens out
You do a lot better with your own trailer at ls
I'd go with land star but they don't allow older pre 2000 eld exempt trucks so I'm going for my authority
I wouldn't have it any other way having mine :)
They do allow it u just have to be able use eld many older truck
How old can your truck be if you pull for landstar?
i dont know for sure, but ive heard if you can hook up an eld to ecm your ok
I was with landstar for 9 years before I got my authority problem with your idea of going with landstar first is that a lot of the loads available to bco's are not brokerable meaning approved carriers cannot haul those loads 99 percent of the loads I did with landstar I can't do that's just how it is.
Yes sir thats right. Talked with some of them about those loads. One lady was like OMG how you get my number lol i told her my brother, then she said i can use you on some loads, but not all loads.
Yeah on the crappy loads that the bco's don't want I hardly pull anything for landstar anymore mostly ch Robinson with a couple of their brokers
John Doe I've been having better luck with ch myself. I like LS loads for the fuel card tho. Setting up NASTC to get away from that though
and the craziest shit is u got thousands of truck owners running for cheap companies for 86 cents to 90 cents. i know back in the 80s my grandpa ran box freight for 4 a mile average
it is crazy! I agree
Im doing 99cpm im soon leaving once i get the cash. Getting apu tomorrow. Ill be going to ls.
What is bco?
Landstar's drivers
What lowes get down to like $1.15 or $1.50 and you think is been double or triple broker .Stealing of our rates
Not sure. It was an example
What’s a bco
Bussiness Capacity owner. It's what Landstar calls their drivers
it's a numbers game dude...
There are enough loads I never have to take shitloads even if you don't have connections
I agree.
Can I call you?
email me makecentstrucking@gmail.com
whats a bco?
Matt clark acronym for Landstar driver. Business capacity owner.
Matt clark acronym for Landstar driver. Business capacity owner.
Here we go again landstar again, we left that company like 5 months ago
Truckers are glutton for failures
$1.10 is slavery
Did you ever wonder why he called you back and gave me the extra $100 is because there Was a lot more on the table .Was a lot more on the table 10 sensible w**** is nothing you should it went for 90 cents more A mile
Constanly learning the ropes
Yeah but they take %35 off the top.
I did a video on that. 65% vs. 80% Check it out :)
Cool. I leased my truck with a company that pays %90. After dead head am looking at $2.42.
Why would you want to make 12% less going to Landstar? Try traveloko
Portuguese Man o' War it's just an example. I User landstar because I know their system
Are you driving and recording this? If you are, drop the big rugs and do Uber. Your video is an ad for bad drivers.
If you look close you'll also see I was frying bacon with my the hot plate on the pass side seat :)
You can't see him constantly checking his mirrors?
I talk to myself all the time when driving,, since I can't sing.
Wtf. Do the math is all about numbers.
iv'e got a good video covering that one lol In a down market, it's LS 100%. In a up market, it's spot market 100% It's all hit and miss
You especially get better at ls if you own your own trailer..extra 7 percent dry or 10 percent reefer
