Yea this album is gas 30 seconds in and i can tell you're a chill dude, gonna be a good vid 💯
What you said about feeling the music more when you got drip on is actually real af and i think a genuine observation about the phenomenology of music (big part of what bladee is doing thay makes his music so special)
Thank you sm bro this made my morning you have no idea 🤞🏼
Explain phenomenology of music to me or link me to some reading I can do pls that sounds so sick
🙏
@@nubnooblet happily :) this is gonna be a long comment bc I'm writing a book about this (phenomenology being a big aspect, not about bladee lol) and need practice explaining it. Anyone who reads please do lmk how well I broke it down
Phenomenology can be reductively understood as the study of how things appear or a "phenomena" they cause, rather than what the things actually are. Phenomena and experience (noun) will be used interchangeably in this context but they aren't exactly the same.
In regards to music, it can make us feel a certain way or have an experience. People like to listen to different types of music to get hyped up vs music to have a cathartic but negative emotional experience like crying over an ex. It is more than just sounds or data in a computer, it causes us to react. I'll elaborate one why further on in the comment.
Beyond this, the song always stays the same. Yet, the experience we have changes. Sometimes a song grows on us and we go from not really getting it to loving it, and in most cases there's no information or explanation that caused it, it's a change in our lived experience that happens through our experience. Sometimes we listen to a song we love and don't experience the "phenomena" we desire or expect, and gotta run it back in a different setting or with a different mindset.
If you look up mandalas on Wikipedia and read the top of the article, Bladee songs are like that where the words/phrases/motifs he reiterates and puts in new contexts across his discography are like the particular symbols (where the words in the song are arranged in a set temporal order instead of a set spatial relationship). And the instrumentals are like the background colors and patterns that provide tone. Something like red isn't a symbol, but it still has symbolic meaning based on one'd culture like it's use for love/anger and more broadly passion in western society. Aspects of instrumentals also have this but they are more niche and have less precedent of cultural development bc they are so recent, but I think that can make them even more powerful bc it is like an in-group exclusive (knowing the influences + history of the genre makes the music "hit better")
That's where we can see the tie back to my original comment about the drip. The same idea of the music being more than just sounds, the clothes is more than just material and the brands/color/overall-look carries meaning both to the wearer and viewer. People implicitly recognize this with all the talk about aesthetic and aura, and certain artists become so popular they can recontextualize the meaning of clothing items through their established credibility + influence (think sematary wearing true religion to invoke chief keef and making new rocks more popular himself)
We all get to some degree how clothes inform our identity and can make us feel a certain way when we love our outfit or dress formally. This ties in with the identity-aspect of being a fan of certain types of music + drain gang specifically cultivates this for themselves as a distinct subculture. This stuff is what informs + supplies the "feeling" or "phenomena" that is the different between a Bladee fan and someone hearing it for the first time. Down to things Bladee talks about like giving meaning to words, where longtime fans know specific phrases to have an almost meme-like characteristic in the specificity of what they reference and the various contexts it's been used in in the past, vs someone just taking the lyrics at face value.
And I think Bladee understands this to a degree few other artists do, where all songs are like Mandalas in format but Bladee uses them like that w/ purpose instead of incidentally influencing people as a byproduct of creating a consumer product for money
@@Alex-vm6ef that was wonderfully explained and so cool. it totally makes sense and describes the feeling im sure most bladee fans feel. where can i read the book when its ready?
@@nubnooblet Thank you I appreciate that, but idk if you sub to this channel I will direct to content that I post elsewhere. I will put the chapters on substack as essays eventually. I would recommend reading the book "little manual for knowing" it's short + cheap
