The Bloodiest Defeat of the War - The American Counter-Attack on Camden to Save the South

  • In 1780, the British strategy to take control of the South was off to an incredible start. Victories at Savannah and Charleston had completed destroyed all the American continental armies in the southern theater.
    The Carolina's were engaged in a brutal civil war during this time. Partison leaders such as Francis Marion and General Tarleton fought for control of the South Carolina backcountry. Militiamen were flooding the colony from the Appalachian mountains. These skilled warriors brought deadly muskets, equipped with curved barrels that allowed them to shoot far more accurately and from a much greater distance from the British. But these men would need support from the main continental army if victory was to be achieved.
    Now, America had to act fast or risk losing the entire South to the British. Overriding George Washington's recommendation, Congress elected to sent General Horatio Gates to South Carolina to defeat the British.
    The following battle would be one of the worst defeats in American history and would be the deadliest American battle until the Civil War in 1861. Gate's rushed into battle, hoping to achieve personal glory and replace Washington as commander-in-chief. He greatly overestimated his militiamen and his army disintegrated on contact with the enemy.
    Following his disgraceful defeat, American militia's continued to try and resist British occupation, but now, all seemed hopelessly lost. In a last-ditch attempt to save the war, Congress selects Washington's choice in commanders, General Nathaneal Greene, to head South and try, for a final time, to regain the South.

    Cliffhanger! Gates was more about self glorification than in the safety of his men...a recipe for defeat...It stands that Washington should have been listened to as he was a great General...This demonstrates how close we were to losing the revolution...something that is not emphasized in history classes! Once again, great presentation, and I really liked the music...looking forward to the next video...

      At that point in time, Washington's greatness as a General was not yet proven. That knowledge was just beginning to grow.

    Please let me know if you have any feedback, comments or opinions! I am currently working on a mini-special on Benedict Arnold. Stay tuned for that, it seeks to explore Arnold's role in the war before his betrayal (including such feats as the Invasion of Quebec). I think you will all enjoy it :)

      Monmouth was inconclusive, but definitely not a defeat for Washington. In fact, the British withdrew from the field first.

    As described in the TH-cam Video the Battle of 'Monmouth' (actually the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse) is described as a defeat. This is not historically accurate the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse was a draw, the Continental Army faltered at the beginning of the battle, when General Lee ordered a premature retreat. However, General Washington rode forward, rallied the army, cursed General Lee and dismissed him from the field. For the remainder of that hot summer day The Continental Army the British army fought to a draw and the British army withdrew from the battlefield and continued their march to New York.

    Gate was a major douchebag. He took credit for winning the Battle of Saratoga when it was Benedict Arnold who made that victory possible. Benedict Arnold will still be synonymous with the word traitor, but I think I think Horatio Gates should be synonymous with the word weasel.

    I have to say - it's pretty widely accepted that the effect of Waxhaws was the revolutionary propaganda that spread afterwards, in reality the event itself was a messy misunderstanding that was easy to spin as a massacre in an age of simple and sparse communications.

    wasn't Mammoth Courthouse a technical draw in which at the end of the one day long fight the British disengaged and continued on there way to there bastion in New York? pretty sure only the initial contact was botched by the Americans. The American vanguard under the command of Gen Lee made a confused and indecisive probe against Howes rearguard. Washington rode up relieved Lee and began to consolidate his lines on the front slope of a hill. with the British now having there blood up decided to capitalize on the initial American confusion and sweep all before them instead all 3 of there assaults we're beaten back with heavy losses. the only thing I can think was in the context of your presentation it had to do with the weakened state of the main army under Washington. not trying to deride or ridicule your content at all I believe you have some skills and I'm a big fan of your work. I just disagreed with you calling Mammoth Courthouse a defeat. tactical draw in which the Americans where left in command of the field. our regulars showing off there new found skills after a winter getting great drill by that Prussian .

    • @lesdodoclips3915
      @lesdodoclips3915 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a defeat. The British planned to retreat, wich they did, the Americans hoped to inflict a decisive defeat on the brits, which they failed. Howes rearguard did engage the Americans, as is typical to buy more time.

    I went back and forth about posting this response. But, I really wish that you would match your level of research with a level of care and accuracy in your mapping graphics. Your placement of Camden is way too far to the east, to the point that for someone with the slightest local familiarity with the region, it places the locale in a completely different context; closer to that of SC's Low Country than the southern Piedmont, where Camden actually lay. Camden is actually close to Columbia, but Columbia did not yet exist as a town. Your use of modern mapping is a bit distracting as well. Atlanta would not exist until midway through the following centuryThere were no large lakes present at the time. They came in the 20th Century. .
