I will show you how to set up or upgrade an AXOLOTL tank for your cute pet axolotl in today's video. This guide is for beginners. I'll walk you through some tips on how to do it yourself. Do you happen to know if a black light would be ok for them cause they don’t like the bright lights

Thanks got watching! Since the black light shouldn’t be as harsh as white light, then I think it should be fine. I actually don’t keep my axolotl’s tank dim due to the amount of plants, and he’s never had any health issues from it. He’s probably just used to it by now.

Can you put 3 axolotls in a 40 gallon because I've read and the Petco people told me that you start with a 20 gallon, then add 10 for each extra axolotl? I just want a second opinion, and I'm thinking of getting a 60 gallon because I've also read they each need 20 gallons. 🙏✨ thank you!

They say the minimum tank size is a 10 gallon, but it’s quite small when it comes to fitting all the decorations and when the axolotl becomes full grown. A 20 gallon minimum is a lot better than a 10. I can imagine a 40 gallon being spacious enough for 3 axolotls, but it really depends on how large each one grows. Some get bigger than others. If you can, I’d start with only 2 axolotls and see how large they grow before adding another.

I would recommend avoiding putting more than one in a 40 gallon. The bio load would be insanely high and you would need to be doing water changes several times a week if there is even two in a 40 gal. On top of that axolotls can nip at each other when there is not adequate space and can cause damage to limbs and gills. The general guidelines for multiples in a tank would be 40 gal for one, 60-75 for two and 100gal for three. They require quite a lot of space!
