Afghans had already defeated Safavi Iran in 1709 in 3 battles & gained complete independence under Mirwais Khan Hotak. They then marched on Iran in March 1722 & conquered 80% of it in no time defeating safavi Shah Tehmasp & ruled Iran for almost a decade during which Russia & Ottomon Turkey attacked them one after the other in 1725 & 1726. Miraculously Afghans defeated both of them but conceded losses too resulting in their ouster in the next few years. This was before the advent of Nadir Shah & Ahmad Shah Abdali.

Two most important subjects that should be taught at schools of foreign policy and leadership are ‘history’ and ‘negotiations’. Without a good understanding of history, leaders will continue to make mistakes in their policy making and without good negotiation skills, leaders (of smaller nations) will continue to say yes (out of intimidation) to superpowers even if it isn’t in the interest of their nations. Great work, Shafaat.
