    I've had a panic disorder for more than twenty years. It has stopped me from traveling, going out with friends, basically robbed me of the soul and spirit I once had. it has gotten the best of me and I'm so tired of losing friends and relationships because of it.

    My panic attacks lasted a long time, days or fast heartbeats, not being able to sleep more than three hours at a time, even to the point where I had to have a safe person to go out with.

    This is gold dust. I'm taken aback by the quality and expertise here. It's an honour that you share such high caliber technique and information for free, a lot of us can't afford private therapy and this is by any measure in a completely different league to what most receive in public sector sessions.
    This really helped me out and I'm sure I'll be coming back to it lots.

    Thank you so much!!! I'm actually a psychologist who suffers from panic disorder and mixed depression and as a clinician am always looking for interventions that work. Unfortunately, I've fallen victim to avoidance by cancelling appointments or skipping dinner but I am determined lately due to the severity of the panic and how it has negatively impacted my life. I can't wait to start practicing my exposure and thought restructuring right away!!! thank you, thank you, thank you!!

    Thanks a million for posting this. I had a full blown anxiety attack for the first time a few weeks ago. I thought I was dying. I passed out twice and was taken by ambulance to the hospital because the people around me thought I was having a heart attack or some other unknown medical problem. I had a second one just today (not anywhere near that bad) and the information in this video has helped me a lot already.

    Thank you for this. I've starting facing my attacks and just remembering it will pass which has reduced my fear. Last night I had a full blow attack at 1st I stood up and paced for a minute then I said no to the racing thoughts. I asked God to help but couldn't overthink it so I just trusted he heard me. I had trouble sleeping so I thought work will be rough since I'm so tired I couldn't let it win though. I laid back down and stared watching your video and it reminded me that this will pass. When the words scrolled across the screen I related so well and begin to calm down. I assume the whole thing lasted 10 minutes then I felt such a calm, like a release of good feeling. Next thing I knew I was calm and fell off to sleep before the video ended. I didn't take a pill I just faced and felt a release from the fear. Thank you for doing this just to help people.

    My panic attacks usually happen when I’m left alone. I hate not being around someone i love. Like my mom, sister, or boyfriend. I have to be around them or at some point I’m going to have a panic attack.

    question:
    everything you said hit the nail on head for me until the "don't try to do something to make panic stop, symptoms go away in 5-15 minutes on their own if just sit with them".
    The first attack that set off what i consider the beginning of my panic disorder lasted 4 hours.
    the two following it were a couple hours. the feeling of unreality and disconnect was unbearable. it was like i was on drugs.
    The only reason they are anything less than a half hour now is because i "do stuff to make them stop". i HAVE to get up and leave the area the panic started in, breathe deeply, i immediately get outside and go for walk, and start listening to or reading something to distract my brain, always starting with a video or blog about panic attacks to confirm for myself that its not real, and because its less scary and isolating when i see others with same experience. Then i can watch and read other things unrelated. i have to stay outside though.
    I can tell when I am ready to go back by how I'm feeling. If I don't do these things, or I cut this ritual short and try to go back too soon and just blow it off like "hey the symptoms will go away on their own I'm ok ", they come-back with a vengeance and I will have a waves of several panic attacks that will last for hours.
    so in this case am i still doing the wrong thing by getting up and doing things to make it stop? And if so, I'm not sure what the alternative is because I can't handle several hour long the panic attacks.

    Thats the hardest part, to be able to change those thoughts i found its a lot easier to change the negative thoughts by learning how to not care as much about dying i found it eased the anxiety during a panic attack a bit enough to be able to try and think straight in order to swap those negative thoughts with positive

    Typical psychotherapist approach I've encountered. Just think hard enough and it'll go away. It's fine. I know full well exactly what's going on when I have an attack, I can push it down but it'll come out at the end of the day or week. I don't think I'm dying, I'm smart enough to rationalise it but it doesn't make it go away...solution?

    • @nahuel92
      @nahuel92 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      stephanie1w1 you have to ask for more. Right at the peak of your symptoms, ask your body to give you even worse symptoms, while you rationalize that they won't kill you. That will cause your body to consume all the epinefrine available and eventually the symptoms will disappear.

    • @MsGoodHands
      @MsGoodHands 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      stephanie1w1 im having same issue. i KNOW its a panic attack and I'm not dying. but mine can last for several hours if i don't do my ritual to make them stop. just sitting with it isn't an option for me. it's ubearable for that long.

    • @BuddhaofBlackpool
      @BuddhaofBlackpool 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      The solution is to accept it and float thru it.

    • @0001har0001
      @0001har0001 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I agree. This is the kind of thing they always say. I know exactly what is happening, but it still happens anyway. I can tell myself that I'm safe, there's no danger, etc. but I still feel like I'm dying. Also, yes a panic a panic attack only lasts a few minutes but if it's recurring panic attacks they can keep coming and coming for hours.

      In addition to these tried and true suggestions so well explained by Dr Spelman, one should be sure that they have eliminated a medical disorder of being hypersensitive to CO2. CO2 is very high in closed in places like stores, classrooms, airplanes and other vehicles. Not just 2 or 3 percent higher than fresh air, but 100 to 600% higher! It does not bother normal persons. Many university studies have documented producing panic attacks in those who suffer from panic attacks by breathing just 5% CO2 for a few minutes. CO2 can trigger what appear to be panic attacks. There are now inexpensive cheap safe hand held CO2 filters that help such persons, like Bcalm. This medical device can be helpful to persons who are trying to attain relief from therapy but are discouraged by breakthrough attacks triggered by high CO2 in closed in environments.

    Does the same advice you give for facing that fear of going on a train or whatever makes other people get triggered applies if your fear is the fear of panic attacks themselves and nothing else? Because I've tackled all my problems because I thought they were what caused the panic attacks but I quickly realized that it's the fear of having them all the time makes me have them all the time. I just wanna know how to stop being afraid of panic attacks.

    • @kimberlypersaud7325
      @kimberlypersaud7325 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      This was touching..thank you for your time...
      My problem is over thinking situations.. I over think and come up with all these things in my head..
      I posted this comment because I was extremely desperate..I was having many panic attacks a day..
      And severely sleep deprived...
      I still have the problem but I've started doing meditation and breathing exercises to retrain my mind..I see progress in just these two weeks I've started..
      I also try doing those things that I fear... it's easier said than done but it's necessary if I want my life back.
      Everything you explained in this video is extremely true and helpful...
      I thank you :)

      I'm in the same boat. the only thing that frightens me and keeps me anxious is the fear of having another panic attack. people often talk about situational panic attacks, but I'd like to know how to desensitize myself for my particular problem.

    • @nahuel92
      @nahuel92 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Kimberly Persaud that's the last part of the cycle, the fear of having a new panic attack. In order to overcome that fear, you have to learn that the symptoms that you experience in a panic attack are very uncomfortable, but they are not going to kill you.

    • @kimberlypersaud7325
      @kimberlypersaud7325 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's true... I'd be lying if I said it isn't difficult..but it is.. but it's a lot better than when I first started... don't let the fear of anxiety overtake you.. it's all in your head and entirely up to you..those thoughts you have are just thoughts...don't pay any attention to them... the same goes for emotions..just let them pass
      Be mindful. Wish you all the best❤

      One thing that might help ( I KNOW it's extremely difficult, as I am a panic attack sufferer myself) is to accept it. Let it happen and hold on for dear life. Imagine you are in the middle of a tornado.....everything is chaotic, but see yourself in the eye grounded, and accepting the feeling. The more we try to avoid the attack, the worse it becomes. Do it little by little. Sometimes it will work and other times it won't. Accept and build from that. It's the fear of the fear that gets us.

    Exposure therapy seems risky for treating driving panic attacks, especially on freeways where many experience it the most. Anxious drivers may be more attentive but acute panic symptoms eclipse that small benefit during an attack.

    I constantly have these bad butterflies in my chest and stomach !
    So basically what you saying is , there is no cure for that , you just have to cope with the symptoms for the rest of your life !?

    • @flintwick186
      @flintwick186 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Basically she is saying you have to stop fearing the attacks in order for them to stop. The more you fear the feelings and run away from what is triggering the attacks, the more those attacks will happen. Face your fears and they will no longer have the power they do over you.

      This is very common, start off slow and dont pressure yourself, worked with my experience. Ask God to take your worries and anxieties away. I had health anxiety that made me panic a lot and transferred on to my driving. I went to the doctor to make sure I am physically well. That is the best thing you can do in my opinion.

      I had the same experience twice when i was driving on the highway i felt i was gonna faint and i started shaking! I couldnt breath, but i have been able to survive and still drive! We have to face our fears is the only way! Best wishes!

  •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yes, these techniques bring relief, but if you stop there you haven't treated the source of the anxiety. It's then likely to cause other symptoms that are more difficult to treat, such as weird autoimmune illnesses that few doctors will know are caused by the same problem that the anxiety was an attempt to solve.
    Anxiety is rarely a disorder, instead it's a sensible instinctive response to growing up in danger. Pia Mellody was already explaining this 25 years ago. Look her up, and on my channel there's the example of what was causing my resistant anxiety, plus more useful information.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, the visible symptoms of anxiety are only a small part of it. by stopping at the symptoms, you’re not getting the huge increase in clarity of mind that can result when a person’s attention is no longer busy being anxious. I know this from personal experience, reducing my anxiety by healing the roots of it has allowed me to get a whole new perspective on life and on what I want from it, it helped me switch to doing work I couldn’t imagine how to do, it helped me improve my relationships, it’s just fantastic. Wouldn’t you love to get the same? It’s possible, and the anxiety is showing the way towards achieving this, so let’s not just erase it!

    Very good tips in your video and I am trying them out on a daily basis.
    I have been struggling with panic attachs for almost 20 years. I was put on antidepressive medications quite early without therapy, but over time i started going to several kinds of therapy. This summer i decided to stop with all medications in agreement with doctor, since the medications has lost its effect more and more. Do you believe there is a negative long time effect by using anti depressive medications for such a long time? I try to use the techniques several times a day but my life seems very hard.
    Thank you for a very interesting video
    Sincerly

    Can you explain what heat palpitations feel like? As my palpitations
    have missed beets and heart flutters 20 to 30 times a day Evert day. I'm
    told this is natural and that they are harmless yet they give me an
    instant response to all parts of my body. Please help me to under stand
    that this in normal, please. Desperate! I know this is a late question
    (2018) but a response may be helpful. This has been going on for over 30

    Also focusing outward is a good stategy but what about people with derealization or depersonilization i struggle with depersonilization daily but its at an all time high during a panic attack so focusing outward provokes me more anxietyso my only defense mechanism is to close my eyes and hold on for dear life
