One of the most notorious regions for rogue waves is the southern coast of South Africa where the five-knot west-going Agulhas Current meets strong westerlies from the Southern Ocean.
Agulhas Current, surface oceanic current that forms the western boundary current of the southern Indian Ocean. It flows southward along the southeast coast of Mozambique and the coast of South Africa before turning eastward to join the flow from Africa to Australia. A small part of Agulhas water apparently continues westward around the Cape of Good Hope into the Atlantic Ocean. The Mozambique Current, between Madagascar and Africa, also feeds the Agulhas Current.
The most famous case of a ship being lost off that coast was the S.S. Waratah, a 150-m long cargo liner steamship. On 26th July 1909 the Waratah left Durban on her way to Cape Town with 211 people on board. She was last spotted 180 miles from Durban and, to this day, no trace has ever been recovered.
Over the last few decades, more than 50 large ships have been severely damaged by gigantic waves in that area.
Sailing on smaller ships poses more dangers as you will witness in the video. The freeboard is less & the chances of water ingress are more. This demands for more vigilance & safety as even a small mistake can lead to huge damages of life, cargo & environment.
Merchant Navy poses great risks and dangers at all times, therefore is a well paid job.
Enjoy the video & don't forget to give it a big thumbs up if you found the video informative .

Thanks for hauling our stuff you guys deserve mad respect, the world would not be the same without you guys.
Means a lot
Thanks 😊

@@KaranvirSinghNayyar Great video! BTW the Beaufort Scale is pronounced BOWfort ( as in BOW and arrow).
What’s “mad respect”? Does it differ from “grudging respect”?
I don't know how much you make each year but the adventure and being on a boat seems like it'd be worth it. I'm stuck in a corporate IT job now and even though I make six figures, I love your videos. I always envied the freedom that cargo ship crew had. Cheers from the US.
It’s a tough life with alot of adventure yes
Has its pros and cons
@@KaranvirSinghNayyar If I could become a deck officer, I would look forward to:
no rent to pay, no renters insurance, no car repairs, car gas, maintence, no food to buy, no traffic to fight, no road rage,
Yeh being at sea is a much better life than being stuck in a boring office all day. I work I’m maritime and wouldn’t change for the world, even though I could earn better money elsewhere it’s the lifestyle and the places you get too see that makes it all worth it🙂👍🏻
@@geddon436 well we still have rent too pay as when we get back home on leave we need somewhere too live and sleep. Although I only rent a small one bedroom apartment as I’m hardly there and it’s enough room for me. In fact most of the cabins I live in are bigger than my bedroom back home. But it’s just a crash pad with a warm bed too sleep in, a small living room and kitchen too cook in when I’m back home.
@@matty6848 i don't know how long people come back to shore for, but it still sounds better than paying rent for the whole year.
I really love how you explain complex maritime things whilst being interesting and not condescending
I live in Cape Town and enjoyed seen your perspective of rounding the cape. Strong SE winds in summer and NE winds in winter. Know you know why it was called the cape of storms.
Now I definitely know
Wow , we really are passengers to what mother nature desides to give us for weather . Take care and thanks again for the great video Karanvir. 👍
Welcome Luke
Hello KSN! 🙂🙏Those sunset is so serene! yes you are right While sunsets are a literal end to a day, they've also become symbols of peace, harmony, and the promise of renewal. Sunsets are a great reminder to rest and reset our hearts and minds at the end of each and every day.A beautiful sunset is your reward for surviving another day. Enjoy as many as you can.🙏😊
Absolutely sir! It gives hope every time
Your story telling and video skills just keep getting better and better, really appreciate you taking us along! Awesome stuff!
Thanks so much Eric
Really ! He is improving !!👍
Karanvir, thank you for another wonderful video! I love the explanations of the weather, currents and actually see the weather and currents displays on the bridge. Thank you. That ocean was just a swirling mess. Growing up I always heard stories about rounding the cape from the sailors we knew. Your vid explained it all. The Sunday food looks incredible! Yum! Safe travels!❤️
Thank you Tina for tuning back in ❤️ means alot
You do such an amazing job capturing the moment and explaining exactly what's going on. As always thanks for sharing your unique experience with us all, it's definitely pretty interesting.
Thank you Kevin
As a 75- model ex-sailor on the S.A. coast for a few years on coasters, I know these waters like my backhand and also all the dangers of the sea down there. Thanks for the instructive comment and nice pictures, may you always have water under your ship's keel and a girlfriend in every harbor!
Thank you so much for watching
You are truly a gentleman. You are the most honest vlogger I have met on the internet. Thanks man for showing us life at sea !!

U are such a blessing when u talk about mother nature...Blessed Be sweet soul 💖
I am geography geek, really liked the way you explain about oceans currents with real pictures.
I hope you will show us pacific soon.
Glad harsh
Wow, I had no idea the currents formed those large eddies. I've seen those on a much smaller scale in smaller bodies of water and rivers. Makes sense the ocean would too - at ocean scale! ;-) Another great video, thank you!
Thanks for tuning in Philip
So glad I found this channel, the last couple years I've been really interested in Ocean Crossing ships so I look forward to watching all your videos. Thanks for making these 🙂
Thank you Adam for tuning in

Your philosophical observations that punctuate your video are so good. You are so wise to understand that we are all pieces of mother Nature at this young age.
Like you, good boy🤗
Thank you for watching the video carefully.
Thank for the post having sailed up and down the coast of South Africa many times this brought back some memories of the very large swells and seas you can encounter
Happy to read that Kenneth
Was tracking your vessel on marine traffic this morning and thought oh he's back in Asia and might aswell post a video soon haha.
Haha it takes time to edit such videos
If you can have a bad time rounding the Cape in a large merchant vessel, think of what it must have been like in the days of sail. They were brave men in those sailing ships facing storm force winds and strong currents. The thought of going aloft in those conditions is something no one can imagine if they have not done it.
Absolutely can't imagine those days
Your channel is doing great man. I haven't watched for a while. So cool to see the progression. Congrats.
Thank you
This was well done. I enjoyed it very much.
Now may I have a bowl of that delicious looking rice?
Happy trails......
Great video! One question: have you ever experience a rogue wave?
Yes once
Did you watch and listen? Try again Mario at 2:35
@@Vinnie101a thk’s! I didn’t understand so well this clip!

Glad to hear it!
God Bless You ,,Your Crew Members and Also Your Wonderful ⚓ Ship,, Sunny Skies and Fair Winds for You All!!!
Awesome video❤
Thank you for teaching laypeople about large ocean-going cargo ships. I spent my life in critical care units of hospitals so your world is very alien to me. Before your videos, I thought most of the day-to-day of these ships were computer controlled. I was very surprised at how hands-on many of the activities are. Each of you put your lives on the line to keep the world supplied with daily needed goods.
Welcome
The motivation and dedication of yourself really inspire me to keep going on in whatever i do. Thank you so much ksn 🙏

The cape can be a dangerous place. Enjoyed the video safe voyage to you and your shipmates. :)
Thank you Steven
Awesome videos ! You have a such a cool job 😎.
🌊🌊
Such a great video capturing the daily activities aboard ship. I also really really like good Biryani as well, and that looked delicious!
I've seen quite a few videos documenting how rough and dangerous the southern passage around Africa can get with high seas and freak waves, even though you had some high winds it didn't look like you did too bad in you passage around Cape of Good Hope. Thanks for this! Nicely Done!!
Thank you Dean for such a generous comment
Mighty Sea 🌊 and amazing editing by you ⚓😊👌🏻
