Mere Mehboob Tujhe (Mere Mehboob) - Lata, Shakeel, Naushad

  • Lata sings the female version of this rarely seen title song "mere mehboob tujhe" and for once she almost catches up with Rafi's immortal rendition. The compelling lyrics by Shakeel could not have found better lips than Sadhna's, to deliver this song on screen. Lata's impeccable Urdu pronounciation complements Naushad's vivid recreation of the 'Lakhnavi maahaul' in this timeless composition.

Well I used to listen to Rafi sahib this song. When I listened to this song by Lata with attention I am totally struck!! I thought what Rafi sahib sung could no one sung. But Lata ji is Lata. Perfect is a small work, she is unsurpassable in the history of Gayeki. This is how history is made!

Both Lata and Rafi saab are the ultimate definition of legend. I agree that Rafi saab has poured lot more emotion to the song.. but lata's voice is so awesome that even if she doesn't puts any emotion to the song still she will sound awesome. But that's not the case.. Lata has poured the right amount of emotion into every song she sung creating magic and we are still under her spell. So did Rafi saab. I was as dedicated and professional in my field as they were in the music.

I m 28 n hv been listening to Lata n Rafi since i was a kid , i can say i hv grown up listening to both of them n almost know all of their songs. i love them both for their wonderful n unique treasure of songs that they have given. BUT now this comparison between both of them luks quite silly for me.. they have been at the top among either gender singers..

For me Lata is the best female singer and Rafi the best male singer and I want to listen to both of them. They have sung some wonderful duets together.

Everlasting song sung beautifully by lata ji. For some reason, I find that there is more emotion and subtleties in Rafi sahib's version. Does anyone agree?

    Dear bhiiisham,
I appreciate your comments very much, and above all, the statement that you have an opinion and you have a right to have it. I do not know how to do thum up, or thum down. But, I do certainly appreciate your stand, and your opinion.
In discussions about some other videos, some one very rightly pointed out that, in most cases, these are male songs which, due to the story, the female person has to repeat. There are natural limitations to it.

    Part V
It used to be somewhat similar to what we we see here in the actions of Johnny Walkjer and the hero. People who did not understand a word of the language, remained motionless until the song was over. Believe me I saw it many times. So, I used to think about those days when my elderly friend, an expert in "classical" music, used to admonish me for my poor taste. Time had given its verdit !
The Rafi version, to begin with, is the original expression of passionate love by a male person.

    Part III
The male version is longer, more "full", and has a greater thrust. When I look back, I tend to think that it was the beginning of the period when great poets were just beginning to use the words "Meri Mehboob", or "Meray Mehboob". Examples : Faiz Ahmed Faiz wrote :"Mujh sey pehli si mohabbat, MERI MEHBOOB naN maaNg". Sahir Ludhianvi said " MERI MEHBOOB kaheeN aur Mila Kar Mujh Sey" i.e. not at Taj Mahal. Shakil Badayuni brought a challenging reply to Sahir's poem.

With all due respect to Lataji, her version of this song is no where compared to RafiSaheb's singing. Rafisaheb's singing of this song, as with many other songs he has sung, simply divine.

    Part IV
"Ik Shahanshah Nay Bana Kay Haseen Taj Mahal..."
In our song, Shakil Badayuni is practically at the climax of his art. The composers, singers and musicians, every one has done wondres, be it male or female version.
Two years ago, after breaking my leg in an accident, I spent my evenings in an Asian restaurant and saw a DVD which included only Lata version. Usually, upon hearing the tune, the voice and words "Meray Mebboob", European customers, "stopped eating".

    Part II
In my student life (at the age of 18/19), we friends used to sit in a restaurant/tea house. The radio or gramophone record, some times, played this song, usually in Lata version. I got so much absored in it that I begged others "not even to sigh" during this song. One of our somewhat elderly friends often got iritated. Not because I requested the group to be silent, but because he lamented that my taste for music was appaling, worthless, and disappointing.

rafi's version of this song has far more depth, emotions, he sings the words like he really means each word , giving every word a totally broad perspective. lata is a great singer but just does not match the version by rafi. anyways the version sung by rafi is the one which gained acclaim and unless you saw the movie one is not even aware the lata sang the same song

You may find that .but the thing is sadhna and rajesh is not same . their way of expressing emotions will not be same.lata ji sang the song in sadhna style in right emotions.then the song is totally made in male perspective.just think.rafi ji also sang aji rooth kar and rahe na rahe hum song but lata jis version became super hit.didnot rafi sang well? He sang but the song was made in female perspective and thats the reason

@zorajabeen I wonder your opinion would have been the same if Lata Mangeshkar was muslim!!!! and it happens with a lot of human beings. Our judgement always gets colored with religion, language, nationality, race etc. Best is not to pass judgements but enjoy the good piece of art.

It goes both ways - In the movie Arzoo (bewitching Sadhana again) both Rafi and Lata sing the same song - Aji Rooth Kar Ab Kahan - Lata's was far better. In terms of longevity, Lata outlasted Rafi. Lata is the better singer because she had more range - Rafi's voice doesn't go up very high. But I agree that both are great, and we can be fans of both singers
