I love hearing you discuss how Austen's England didn't ring true for you. This book sounds fascinating, although maybe a little brutal for my mood at the moment

I get that. Sometimes nice books are required. Regency romance, for example.

Found your review having just read the book and have to agree with everything you said. The superb balancing act of showing both the good and bad in both sides was extraordinary.

Thank you for another excellent review! I am a fan of books about the North of England. I live in the Upper Midwest of the US--a place of terrifying beauty!

Great review! I really enjoyed this book as well and thought for sure it would make the ROC shortlist.

I'll be starting on reading the shortlist this week (two of the books arrived yesterday) so will have a more educated view soon, but my initial sense is that this year's shortlist is super-literary beautifully written prose rather than the more story-focussed narrative of The Gallows Pole. But I may be wrong - will update...

I think you're right but for one story-focused book, We That Are Young by Preti Taneja. The shortlisted books that I've read so far include We That Are Young, Attrib & Other Stories, and Blue Self-Portrait. I'm still considering picking up some of the others. Will you be discussing them? I hope so!

I'm planning to discuss them... I have two on my coffee table (Gaudy Bauble and Die, My Love) and the rest on the way, so let's see how far I get before the announcement on 20th March.
