  • 4 simple rules to find the thermal core and to stay as close as possible to it. Using the core, it's easy to outclimb other pilots. In this short how-to video I show how I gain the attitude faster than other pilots.

    that happens so often that some pilots somehow cruise along without a plan in mind it seems... + huuuge circles... but as you show it in the video, they really helped me by doing that mistakes all the time. you don't need thermal glasses, just a bunch of pilots without a plan 😜

    Climbing better is just making less mistakes than the others !

    Just what I noticed and would do/explain differently
    1:02 he is not turning flat, he was exploring different area, turning other side slightly for a moment. This (exploring, not turning other side) is generally not considered as bad behaviour, but depends of amount of exploration and your success rate of finding better cores.
    1:21 rule to observ is generally crucial, but your combination with following glider blindly without any real reason made you climbing slower in this time. You ended in a weaker part of lift, and returned later. Ok, if it was world class pilot, than you could follow blindly and it is rarely a mistake ;-)

    At 1:58 when you say, "What are they doing?", that happens often when one or two pilots are turning tighter the the rest - seems to happen to me anyway :-D.. You would have looked the same from his perspective I think. You just ended up in two side by side left turning circles - and then the approach speed is really fast. Not always possible to see from a video but looks like it.

      Normally it's a rule that you always follow the turn direction of those above you, turn direction was left all the time, turning right when everybody circles left is just plain dumb

      @@qp4fg855 Which wing here in the video was turning right?

      So that's what I was trying to say, when a thermal splits into two cores, in the heat of the moment it can seem like someone has reversed their turn - and you will look the same to them - but no-one has changed turn direction. It's something to be aware of because each pilot will feel that they are in the core and so they are in the right and the other pilot has done something wrong. But it's exactly the same for both pilots.

      @@7up-weee that's a really weird phenomenon I didn't know yet, it looked like a random pilot going the wrong way. Good thing to look out for!

      @7up-weee ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@qp4fg855 Yeah it's a good one to know. If a thermal is going to separate into different cores then it's usually higher up so that's good, there is time to move around and even drop down a bit and let the other pilot fly above for a while as the cores drift apart so there's no chance of collision. If things really do get silly and pilots are turning in every direction, I just leave and go find another thermal if I can.

    So many pilots turn too wide, it's frustrating. And no matter how many times it has been said it doesn't seem to make a difference .... Maybe how to turn tightly in a thermal should be part of student pilot syllabuses.

    Feel the drift… and… do what ? :D Upwind checks ?
    Don't follow blindly… what/who? the wing that leaves the thermal?
    I'd like a video with solo flying tips, I fly in not crowded places sometime and rule #2 becomes void and for my level it's very hard to fly weak conditions without visual indications =B

      This was just a regular XC flight. I launched, quickly gained altitude, and flew away.
