I started researching her after I saw that clip about her in the Beef DVD and she has many interviews out there where she is talking about going back to school and really helping her community without being loud about it. That day KRS stopped thinking of her as a little girl and respected her as a young woman and MC. Roxanne is the only person I seen bring Mo'Nique back to her childhood in a good way. I can't wait for the Monie Love story. Lauryn Hill, Rah Digga and all the Queens.
Shawn P. She was a product of her environment! When people know better, they do better. If she’d grown up like a “Cosby Kid”.. things would’ve been different.
@Shawn P. yes, he was young and she did stupid shit too. So what? Fucking your virgin mary... Real world ain't like that. She made history as a young talent, she's the mother of most of these legend MCs we listen too. Fuck ya. She da queen.
I hope they talk about the "Big Mama" diss track where she went after Latifah, MC Lyte, Yo-yo, Monie love, etc. That song was brutal, I think she called Lyte a dyke which prompted Lyte to release the song "Ruffneck" to prove that she wasn't gay.
Because of "The Bridge Is Over " every time I hear the name Roxanna Chaunte, the line "Steady Fuckn" immediately comes to mind. Been like that for 30 yrs!
The Queen of Hip Hop in my opinion. “Roxanne Shanté stay creepin' You sleepin' but I stay armed, and dangerous. No matter what your name is, bitch I make you famous” That verse was so rad and so true, anyone who tried to diss Roxanne Shanté got their name out there. One of my first car mix tape cassettes that i would play back in 96-97 I think had that Frankie cuttless cypher part 3 track and I would always think “that girl has skills” little did I know she was already old school way back then. Then I herd that verse of that old stuff with biz beat boxing “we came here tonight to get started to cold act ill or get retarded” Oh mate I take my hat off to you legend. I got shivers down my spine hearing that. Down here in Australia we didn’t have a lot of access to it all back then so I used to record it off a radio show and fill shoe boxes with tapes lol. Big respect from down under!
I always liked Roxanne Shante. Love how she told KRS to not try and change the lyrics. I miss those days. The bride is over The bridge is over!! 2018.. Brooklyn all day!
Roxanne Shantay factor is "knowing you are great at what you do and you don't need validation from anyone else." Validation is nice, but people with this mindset don't need it. This woman/human/god is a resilient being. To go through and survive so much and yet thrive is beyond remarkable. Thank you my elder for sharing your story.
When I was growing up in Greensboro, North Carolina, back in the day, my father's best friend, who was from Philadelphia, would go home to visit his family from time to time and would bring back these WBLS mixtapes featuring DJ Marley Marl and the first song I remember by her was "Roxanne's Revenge". Thanks to my dad's friend, I used to have the nicest mixtape collections.
The Bridge Is Over is the greatest dis record of all time. It's almost tied with No Vaseline. I don't care what any Tupac stan says. Like my man Books of Das Efx said, "I still get the chills when niggas play The Bridge Is Over." KRS rapping in a dancehall reggae cadence was already ill enough. His voice and enunciation were bold and crystal clear. The disses were delivered with such style and passion. The way he interpolated the lyrics to Billy Joel's It's Still Rock N' Roll To Me was genius: "what's the matter with your MC, Marley Marl, don't you know that he's out of touch?/ what's the matter with your DJ, MC Shan? On the wheels of steel, Marlon sucks/ You better change what comes out your speaker/ You're better off talkin' 'bout your wack Puma sneaker/ Cuz Bronx created hip hop/ Queens will only get dropped/ You're still telling lies to me/ Everybody's talkin' 'bout the Juice Crew, funny, but you're still telling lies to me." The beat was bare bones boom bap with hard drums, crashing cymbals and a simple stacatto melody being played on piano. KRS got inside that track with his voice and delivery and rocked that shit smooth like a mink coat to the floor. Damn, that shit was dope. Smh.
i thought i understood how great Criminal Minded was when it dropped over 30 years ago as a teenager from the Boogie Down.....didnt realize i would appreciate it more decades later than i ever could back then....
Beyond facts! What some may not mention is the cadence and flow of the Juice Crew also sounded very elementary compared to KRS-One’s visceral assassin flow…it was so opposing to how they flowed. The Queens team’s flow still had innocence in their voices to a degree, but KRS came with the heat of hell, and there really was no way to match that. Your summary has to be arguably one of the best I’ve ever read about that song. I know the Hollis crew did their thing with Russell and the boys, but the annihilation of this one song, one borough to another, just might be eternal.
Wait, wait, wait, "They're paying not to like you." I think that line went over some cat's heads! It's like a sin and their punishment is paying for disliking something or someone, "They're paying not to like you." You ever notice that whenever someone is hating on you. Your life seems better and brighter in their eyes. While it's the complete opposite for them. Like they're having a good time with their friends. Then as soon as you or your squad walks by their whole demeanor changes. Personally I think it's mad funny. I'm just saying, haha! Anyway, go ahead, Shante! I love your music, positive attitude and representing Hip-Hop to the fullest!! ~ @phurdrick ✊😋
KRS fan for life, but I got mad love and respect for Shante. She always had it always will. "Your name sounds like a broken down radio station!" That was cold. She was 100% legit. She battled for real and took that respect even from the Blast Master. Love when he told that story on the Hip Hop Lives album: "Shante's already the queen". Roxanne Shante is the REAL Real Roxanne.
It's great that people are learning more about Roxanne Shante through these interviews -- but what she is saying is old news to me. As true hip hop fans, people should put in effort to become students of the culture, and learn about the original pioneers. Don't just start with who you grew up listening to. Learn about who influenced the artists you grew up listening to -- and who influenced them -- and who influenced them. Hip Hop has too many front-runners. Don't just be a hip hop 'fan' -- be a historian. This goes for me, too.
Hip-hop fans are some of the most flash-in-the-pan, Johnny-come-lately, fad-loving, mutherfuckers to music. Others are cool, go digging for older music and learn. But most just want to look fresh, new and worry about pussy all day.
I'm 20 years old and grew up on all this hip-hop. I actually met Roxanne at Bls like 5 years ago. I went to Wbls in Nyc to do a interview with another dj and as I was coming in the building, Roxanne Shante and Marley Marl were coming off the elevator. I had all ready grown up listening to my fathers tapes of Marley Marl and Red Alert and to meet Roxane I was starstruck. I didn't know what to say. Roxanne said something to the effect of "We've been hearing about you. Nice to finally meet you." Shante was such a sweetheart.
The Bridge Is Over is one of the greatest party/dis records in history.. caused straight mayhem in the club, parks and jams everywhere in NY back in late 80s .. wish u were there.. incredible!!!🔥🔥🔥
cobracongo respectfully, he was said to be “playin with his nose” pretty often. Plus, the whole knowledge thing wasn’t really a factor yet. The music was still just either good or bad.
Cool77 View after Public enemy's song Public enemy number 1. Magic went on the air and said no more music by the suckers. Public enemy used it as a intro on there next album it takes a nation of millions to hold us back on a song called Lampin
Reggie Reg real talk....he didn't know KRS wanted to be part of The Juice Crew,i even knew that and I was just a toddler at the time....this is history
I really, really like this lady... Had the pleasure of meeting her very briefly at a Juice Crew gig - humble but truly talented. One of the best rappers ever.
Hold up hold up! People hated Shante? I bought all of her joints back in the day! I thought she was a dope mc. I used to love her voice. The beat on 'Have a nice day' was crazy! 'Go on girl' and 'Live on stage' were the shit! My favorite joint off of her album was 'Feelin Kinda Horny' the first hip hop track to sample 'Between the sheets'. So if people were hatin on Shante they were hatin on hop hop for real! Not to mention her battle raps! If you hated Shante back in the day, stick yourself!
Lyrical Threat actually (& I'm not a fan of sequels) but there needs to be a Roxanne Roxanne movie part 2! There's so much to tell during and after her first album dropped .
Really enjoy hearing Roxanne Shante speak. I sought out her early records as a young DJ and still love to play them to this day. They have aged like fine wine
From Jay-Z to krs to Nas to kool g rap to Kane to pun, these guys should be seen as contemporaries. Most of the forebears are still alive and we’re blessed history can still speak. Let’s hear her speak.
I just watched this yesterday. I watch her movie to reminisce and remember the times we were living and careless. Damaged but not defeated. Roxanne shontai was the courage to be the girl that stood her ground and took on a whole male crew and did it well.
i ain't gonna lie, i use to wear the fake ponytail, the door knockers and tried to be roxanne shante sooooo mf'n bad when i was young....this was the FIRST REAL RAP FEMALE that opened the door for ERRBODY ELSE...why wasn't she honored at the BET female hip hop honors???...she opened the door for chicks like lil kim and foxy brown...i remember when kim and foxy came out and she made a semi-diss record to them...i wish i could find it, but i forgot the name...if anybody knows it please let me know...

Loving these interviews. Lol.
I've always respected her. After watching this video, I absolutely love her.
Roxanne is the definition of a Queen. Which is fitting being that’s her borough
Lmao you tried it 😂That was over 20 years ago and you still paying not to like her tho🤔can you tell us more about her life now at 48 than at 16?
Shawn P. She was a product of her environment! When people know better, they do better. If she’d grown up like a “Cosby Kid”.. things would’ve been different.
Dutch3k5 Yup And Queen latifah treats her self like a Queen
Shawn P. She was actually in a relationship with that dude plus she never had to take her clothes off or talk nasty to sell records unlike nick Minaj
@Shawn P. yes, he was young and she did stupid shit too. So what? Fucking your virgin mary... Real world ain't like that. She made history as a young talent, she's the mother of most of these legend MCs we listen too. Fuck ya. She da queen.
Kane and KRS-1 we're and are actually very close friends, this is why Kane never got on a diss record against KRS-1.
They just did a versus
SO far this is my Favorite djvlad
Interview !! This is so Dope !!
88keyz-
loving this interview series! impatiently waiting for the the whole thing to drop already Vlad!
FACCCTS!!!
Know DAT
It was brutal for sure, real hip hop. And none of them answered back cause they knew Shante didn't have a problem throwing them hands too.
Bruh, my mom recalls that day vividly lol Everybody knew MC Lyte was on damage control after that record dropped.
she did on another interview
She ended this segment so smoothly and dropped a jewel
When it comes to true MC’s of hip hop.. the borough of QUEENS is untouchable #fact
I would love to see Roxanne back in the game to see what these female rap artist are going todo. Roxanne was a beast
"Now gimme the baby, let's go!!" Bwahahahaha!! I love her!!
Tonja manigo 😔
Because of "The Bridge Is Over " every time I hear the name Roxanna Chaunte, the line "Steady Fuckn" immediately comes to mind. Been like that for 30 yrs!
Adam Williams - 😂😂😂 Big Facts lol
Lmfao😂
LMAO @ Chaunte
@@schemesupreme7 lol yess wtf I thought it was Roxanne Shante
"Krs one you should go on vacation with your name soundin like a wack radio station." hardest diss line from that battle...salute Krs and Shante
Shante was Ra Ra n ready
Pure legend.....Goddess of greatness !!!!
The Queen of Hip Hop in my opinion.
“Roxanne Shanté stay creepin' You sleepin' but I stay armed, and dangerous. No matter what your name is, bitch I make you famous”
That verse was so rad and so true, anyone who tried to diss Roxanne Shanté got their name out there.
One of my first car mix tape cassettes that i would play back in 96-97 I think had that Frankie cuttless cypher part 3 track and I would always think “that girl has skills” little did I know she was already old school way back then. Then I herd that verse of that old stuff with biz beat boxing
“we came here tonight to get started to cold act ill or get retarded”
Oh mate I take my hat off to you legend.
Roxanne Shantay factor is "knowing you are great at what you do and you don't need validation from anyone else."
Validation is nice, but people with this mindset don't need it.
Agreed! 💯
It's one if them. That entire Criminal Minded album is one of the best rap albums ever recorded.
Also in the song Criminal Minded he raps in the same cadence as Hey Jude by The Beatles.
Much respect to Shante love her!!! She's the truth, glad she's getting her flowers while she's still here
Shante Wanted The Same Energy, KRS Had On The Record In The Middle Of The Bank🤣
~ @phurdrick ✊😋
breatheoffreshair360 I like the fact that she mastered an ideology as a kid, that people alot older are still learning/and/or/ cannot comprehend.
She will forever be the soul foundation of female rap to me, it all started with her.
This goes for me, too.
suaved 100 percent!
Facts
Hip-hop fans are some of the most flash-in-the-pan, Johnny-come-lately, fad-loving, mutherfuckers to music. Others are cool, go digging for older music and learn. But most just want to look fresh, new and worry about pussy all day.
This may be old news but it’s nice hearing it from Shante’s own mouth. Hip hop may be dead, but interviews like these still keeps the flame burning.
suaved Man you might as well forget it cause these lil kids ain’t gone listen
I listen to "The Bridge is over" and "The Bridge" on repeat.
I hope you ask her about Big Mama! That was one of my favorite battle rap songs
J.J. fad dissing Shante on a record ?! They were one hit wonder jokes!
The Bridge Is Over is one of the greatest party/dis records in history.. caused straight mayhem in the club, parks and jams everywhere in NY back in late 80s .. wish u were there.. incredible!!!🔥🔥🔥
yeah, it killed hip hop. his 9mm went bang and the start of gangster rap.
I love her voice 😍
Great interview!!! 👍
If Monique was a rapper and actually got a Netflix special
lol
Her voice is so memorable and still unique to this day.
I used to be in love with this woman. Her music touched me in so many ways. Female legend is what she is.
I'm still bumpin "The Bridge is Over"...🔥🔥🔥
Youngsters do ya homework on this legend. Her documentary is on Amazon prime. Cardi who ?! Nikki who ?! 🤷🏾♂️
Shante's song, "Have A Nice Day" (response to KRS-One's, "The Bridge Is Over") was ghostwritten by Big Daddy Kane.
Mr Magic actually broke Public Enemy’s record on air. He dissed BDP to there faces.
I find it funny Mr Magic had a habit of dissing people that dropped knowledge. Hmmm not too bright
cobracongo respectfully, he was said to be “playin with his nose” pretty often. Plus, the whole knowledge thing wasn’t really a factor yet. The music was still just either good or bad.
MFKNRMX The Bang Messiah Mr. Magic was a ruthless dj on the radio back in the day because of his ego
Cool77 View after Public enemy's song Public enemy number 1. Magic went on the air and said no more music by the suckers. Public enemy used it as a intro on there next album it takes a nation of millions to hold us back on a song called Lampin
Public Enemy, Xclan, Dela, Tribe could not be successful artist in this time.
I love the maturity the realness the truth the love .... Real HipHop .... God Bless Roxanne Shantè and Thank You !
Vlad is like the WORST Hiphop fan ever
He's old and a DJ. It's his job to know artist like a teenager knows who lil Wayne is(whether they listen to him or not)
Reggie Reg real talk....he didn't know KRS wanted to be part of The Juice Crew,i even knew that and I was just a toddler at the time....this is history
Reggie Reg he isn't a fan VLAD is aVULTURE.
Agreed
Vlad is an asshole.
Roxanne this is why we need part 2 on Netflix
Some say ..”Hold up, Hold my phone.”
Roxanne Shante..” Hold Up, HOLD THE BABY!👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
It was wild when that entire thing went down.
KRS saying her name on The Bridge Is Over cemented Roxanne Shante name in Hip Hop immortality! Great Interview.
In 4th grade my mother put me n my big bro on "the bridge is over" n we loved that shit lol old hip hop was bussin 💪🏿😂

I've watched the 4 parts of this interview thus far & I find myself asking: *Why is this waaaaaaaaay better than the movie?*
Lyrical Threat I said the same thing.
Yeah, I wish they would've focused on the story, the MUSIC & not the personal struggle...
Lyrical Threat the movie should of been longer too.
Lyrical Threat actually (& I'm not a fan of sequels) but there needs to be a Roxanne Roxanne movie part 2! There's so much to tell during and after her first album dropped .
Like I said in my review of the movie on this channel I think they are saving stuff for another movie @Honey-Brown Wells
This was truly an interesting and productive interview from one of the greats. I was so surprised Vlad didn't bring up Nas
The mother of hip hop.
I'm a few years younger.. from the Bronx.. but I loved to love Roxanne ❤️
30 Plus years later ! Finally the Truth !!

One of the greatest Mc' s of all time
I love this message 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I think I was 11 or 12 living in Queens when I heard The Bridge is over. That shit hurt me back then. Lol.
LOVED THIS!
KRS DESTROYED THEM ALL STILL HAS A CAREER UNTIL THIS DAY. 👑
RESPECT ..... she was is and always will be hip hop.....
