    The father killed the baby when he wouldn't stop crying. Remember they kept saying he took the baby in the other room and he finally stopped? Then, because he couldn't bear telling his wife what he'd done, he kidnapped the other baby as a replacement. The Mom is STILL none the wiser.

    When I was 3 years old my babysitter pretended to be my mother and attempted to kidnap me from preschool, but thankfully the staff knew she wasn't my mom and my parents got a restraining order against her. This seems to be the consensus, but I ran under the assumption he was adopted and they didn't want him to find out lest he feel alienated. A lot of people are interpreting the parents as threatening, but I see them as worried. Their kid ran away, for christ's sake, and for all they know it's because he had suspicions he wasn't theirs, so they were scared.

    Man the way the mother basically answers what she knows he's wondering with metaphors about the sheep is so disturbing. The story she told in the bathtub about when his father put sheep from two different areas together gave me goosebumps.
    "He left him in the pen with her for three days but he wouldn't accept her. Most take milk in the end, but somehow he knew he didn't belong."
    "What happened?"
    "He died. I think I'll get out now."

  • @ArielCotton
    @ArielCotton 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1389

    1) I believe he was abducted. I think the story was true. Even babies know who their mother is. Their smell, their voice, their warmth. I think he did cry his head off when they brought him home. Because he knew he was not with his true mom. And when they took him in the barn I think it was a sinister move but worked out as he felt a calmness in the lambs. Just my opinion on the story they seemed to rehearse.
    2) i believe the father sabotaged the car. As you see at 9:34 both the mother and father are looking at each other over Joel's success, not happy for him but concerned he may leave. The dad shows up as soon as the car breaks down meaning he was right behind him when Joel left the house.
    3) i believe the mother can not have children so they went to that hospital 17 years ago to "find" and heir for their dying farm.
    4) The pictures he found he hides always. Even at what appears to be him at 5-7 he is hiding. Why? They seem so cold and disconnected.
    5) The father comes in and turns off the telli as he's hearing the news of an abducted baby 17 years ago. How suspicious can you be? The sketch looks just like him and as a family who literally breeds and delivers animals they don't have a story of her labor. Just the story of bringing him home. No pictures of her while she is pregnant or no stories of being pregnant.
    6) Him hunting down the son and her threatening him their true colors come out. But I don't think this is the first time again referring back to him hiding in photos.

      @@gregverney-smith5612 Actually the assumption about him knowing his mom is very true, but not after many years. Newborn babies know their mother's voice because they have been with it for 9months, unfortunately its not easy to know if they can recognize her smell as well but i wouldn't be surprised if they can. I have worked in delivery rooms and a lot of times when the baby is with the mother they are much calmer and dont fuss. But when the mother is stressed they also cry, like when suturing the mother, if she has pain, the baby also cries.

    This isn't a Hollywood movie. Instead it reflects real life which so often leaves us hanging with uncertainties. It's also a film of isolation and survival (on many levels) with an almost toxic mix of emotional dependence, emotional control, and emotional blackmail. How can the family hill farm survive if the son leaves? But how can the son survive and become a man if he doesn't? He at least needs to find the truth of his family origins. But he won't find the honesty he seeks in the home that's become a prison to him. So everyone is caught up in a fight for their survival - on many levels. This is no feelgood film. It's pretty damn brilliant all the same.

Had that been me I would’ve somehow found a way to get away, get to the police and have them compare my DNA with the missing baby’s parents. The isolation and hard life at the farm is enough for a boy to concoct some fantasy or alternate reality. All the vague dialogues and nuances force the viewers to see the story from two different vantage points, leaving us to form our own interpretation to the story, like looking at an abstract painting. I guess the moral of the story is as humans we have an inert desire to seek for the truth when there are incongruities in life.

    I believe this boy was abducted but the reasons were sinister from the start. Dad wanted someone to help him run the ranch so they kidnapped this baby, raised the boy who had never been given any kind of support or kindness that most parents bestow to their children. Deep down, he knew he was not their son. He was never taught how to survive on his own. Being isolated and enslaved by his parents, how would he know how to escape? Just the thought of trying to leave this situation was too abstract for him to see through. It's a sad film and I felt so badly for the boy. I believe, if this had been a true story, he would possibly find the strength to leave, but it would be much later in life. It was far too real for comfort.

    The final line from the mom is not of concern but a cold threat-- got chills from that! Creepy story, though the accent is tough to hear. What I got from it is Joe was indeed kidnapped and the dad is a murderer and the mom is accomplice to the murder and the kidnapping.

      There's no indication that the dad killed the baby. I think they had a baby who died (maybe the mother miscarried) and they abducted another baby to replace the original.

    Why is everyone so pissy about the ending? I think it's perfect. It fits the mood; this story clearly isn't meant to have a "satisfying" resolution. It's dark and depressing and tense, and that's what makes it so good.

    One or two sound issues, but that didn't prevent me from appreciating all the other strong aspects of the film. Very well constructed, acted, shot and edited.
    So this is what I made of it: the mother had a still born baby. She was devastated so he was abducted in Skipton and brought up as their own. He cried because he didn't recognise his new surroundings, but was comforted by the bleating of the lambs. His new parents' justification that he belonged with them. The disabled mother also physically relied upon him. (Confusing this - when did her disability begin?). Thank you for this generally excellent film!

  • @InkedLoisLane
    @InkedLoisLane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    In the bathtub, she is confirming what he suspects, and tells him he can't make it if he leaves....and the car scene with the father does too, but he lets the boy know that it's justified because he took to the lambs as a baby, that he was ok with them. No telling how often this goes on every day in real life.

      Black Market Babies and baby theft was a big deal back in the 70's and 80's (here in the U.S.). Its why there is so much security in maternity wards nowadays compared to other areas of a hospital. It is still a thing though around the world, even today. This film is interesting as it seems to portray the other side of people who get these illegal adoptions. We're told there was another child who died in an accident, the mother is disabled, and they live in a very isolated rural area and likely poverty stricken area. All of these issues combined point to why the family would go the route of an illegal adoption, as they'd likely be denied to do one legally. So they likely bought one. I don't think the parents abducted him personally, They simply went down a dark route to have a child of their own. Joe seems to know he's adopted, but finding out about the missing child case turns even that into something more sinister.

The only thing missing is that he might have been able to break out by contacting authorities who were searching for him. Of course, it's fiction, but it does point to probably real situations.

    Part 2
    Later that night, Joe helps the woman into her bath. As he washes her hair, he tells her that just like that little lamb that died, he knows she is not his mother. He tells her that he will not die here like that little lamb. And then he pushes her head down underneath the water, and holds her there until she drowns. The man is out in the barn, delivering a lamb. While his back is turned, Joe comes up behind him and caves in the back of his head with a sledgehammer. Then Joe takes their car and goes to the town he saw on tv about the missing boy. He finds the police station, and tells a policeman that he was watching tv with his mother when the news came on about the missing boy. When he saw his picture on the tv, he looked over at his mother and there were tears in her eyes. She broke down and told him the truth, that he was the missing boy. She told him that for years they had tried to have children, but because of her illness, they were never able to conceive a child. So her husband went and found them a child, a boy, who would be able to work and would help to save their dying farm. She felt so guilty, and wanted Joe to finally know the truth, and was going to help him leave, then her husband found out she told and flew into a rage and killed her, and was going to kill Joe too, so Joe had to kill him in self defense. The police believe him, and then they take him to meet his real family and he gets to live happily ever after with them.

The fact that their way of living (that is so intrinsic for their survival) was what made him stop crying was seen as a sign that he belongs there.

The main kid looks an awful lot like the king (red hair and blue eyes while his family had brown hair and brown eyes) and even his parents say he and the king's son have the same birthday and born in the same hospital. They go to get routine questioned by this agency the king hired and passed enough for the boy to be able to get a DNA test. Even the parents were unsure if he could be the king's son because of the hair and eye difference.TLDR: the boy chooses not to do the DNA test because what good would it due? Sure the king would have his biological son for the throne but it would tear his family apart and he loved them too much.
