Egypt just dug a Suez canal parallel channel.

Service on Bakersfield-Los Angeles is not planned before 2033, so unless he is planning to serve as Governor for 4 terms, he is probably right.
Why is this bypassing Canyon Country? They wouldn't have to tunnel through the San Gabriels if they went a little farther north. They could follow 14 elevated or surface. A tunnel in Earthquake Country bisecting the San Andreas Fault? Stupid.
if a earthquake hit and you were on an elevated highway there is a good chance it would crumble but on a tunnel in a train, nothing will happen. There has never been a single accident in Japan with high speed trains even in a tunnel

They've survived a huge earthquake going under San Francisco Bay with BART. Japan has had some huge quakes, and the tunnels have survived.
