    These long form tournament recaps are easily my favorite Wolfey content. They are amazingly balanced between in-depth and accessible that makes me feel like I am actually learning more about the competitive scene and it can be fun to play along mentally and try to predict the choices that the players make in the games. Also the work that has been put into remaking the match scenes to visualize the voiceover is amazing. The effort is super appreciated as it would be incredibly difficult to follow along with just the voice over.

      Wolfe gets a few games from the stream, but most games are not streamed in any given tournament. Wolfe Glick is important, but not so important to get all his games, even day 1 games, onto the stream. If they were all just streamed, he wouldn’t need to be taking the notes he uses to make these videos. Note that the games where he talks about having not taken notes have less granular detail, even though they still have recreations.

Since you get to analyze your own games maybe a little more than most players I believe makes your strategies that much greater. Your strategy and knowledge are what put you above and up into the level of Pokémon player you are. Honestly yeah wolfey's script writer and editor went wild here. The Smogon prep games with the customized backgrounds, the recreated games, tying in the footage from the broadcast, etc. The only problem I'd have is the fake drama in the title, "It was a mistake." I'd rather have them stage the story around creating the perfect team and pushing through exhaustion.

    I would say even if the white herb “didn’t do it’s job” (and only popped once) it still did it’s job by totally deterring the use of taunt on the amoongus. Sure you don’t get the wasted turn bc they know it’s there but that still means you never have a taunted amoongus.

    • @raysay1818
      @raysay1818 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Honestly for real! I would assume some if not many of the players had taunt and wanted to use it against amoonguss but their knowledge of the herb stopped them from even bothering to use it. Instead of preventing one use of taunt it stopped most usage of taunt overall which gives it significantly more value than it first appears. definitely wasn't a waste to have.

    The biggest takeaway here that I have of what gives Wolfey the "world champion difference" is that Wolfey is really good at looking at a matchup, and identifying his win-condition, and playing to that win-condition. This is different from beginning VGC players who look at battles from a turn by turn basis of "what is the best position I can be in next turn" whereas Wolfey is thinking about "what is the position I want to try to get to in 5 turns?" This win-condition is typically some game state where the opponent has certain things on the field that cannot beat Wolfey's things on the field. Specifically we can see that Wolfey doesn't lose a single game against Dondozo-Tatsugiri because as soon as he sets up with terra grass iron hands + amoongus on the field against powered Dondozo, the opponent has gone all in, and Wolfey can just follow a flowchart and win the game.
    I think in the game against dondozo with a glimmora, the win con for the opponent was probably to make sure iron hands was poisoned before pulling out Dondozo. This is why the turn where Wolfey brings out Amoongus to absorb toxic spikes was so crucial.
    The team comp where Wolfey lost 3 times to definitely doesn't seem unbeatable at all, and I think Wolfey is absolutely right in that if he had more prep to explicitly study that matchup, he'd probably be able to at least lower the amount of variance that he ultimately have. In Wolfey's analysis, I think the "wincon" for that matchup is a lot more nebulous, or at least he still doesn't understand it (although honestly pretty much 99% of the viewers won't be able to figure it out either without extensive testing)

      that does sound pretty good but i think the fact that it takes amoonguss needs 224 speed ev with a speed boosting nature to outspeed min speed ape hurts the strategy a lot, since the mushroom loses a lot of its bulk due to that much speed investment and the monkey can easily be outsped and ko’ed before it could land its rage fist
