      Entering Valve to the Linux community was a very good Thing. Proton with SteamOS Show the benefit and ability of API Translation without emulating Things. Also Wine are so mature and Well aged. Valve Show how modern simplify GamingUI can be, with Integration of distribution ways. It mean one click to get a Game without config to Play is a high plus to get the Consumer.

    Thanks for sharing! I had no idea this existed. That really gives me a use case for Fedora again after many years. I'll try it out by the time LMDE6 is ready and compare them. Also, auto login is great for children & seniors who don't really understand computers and are prone to forget things. But of course, we grownups need passwords.

    • @DesignDocsWithJames
      @DesignDocsWithJames  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So for the record I'm not like, diametrically opposed to auto sign in as a feature or concept. I'm opposed to it being on by default when you pitch your OS as a "hey gamers tired of Microsoft, try this totally free replacement that I made seamless just for you!" People will not even realize that's an option, or even a problem. Hell, windows doesn't even allow it without some registry edits and it's still buried in netcplwiz.exe and requires pre entering your password.
      As an aside this is week 4 of me dailying Nobara and it's freaking great. Fedora that just works. Still have some distros I wanna play with of course but this might stay my daily for some time.

    I had this issue! Started with Linux mint, and I'm not sure how or why, but it was *just* Cinnamon that was having this issue for me on my old Mac. No other Xorg or Wayland compositor/desktop was giving me any weird half framerate issues, despite the game itself reporting 60. Very strange. (Maybe it was Mutter?)

    • @DesignDocsWithJames
      @DesignDocsWithJames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Curious how a Linux distribution would change your network speed - what hardware are you running on (WiFi vs Ethernet and what’s the chipset)? Curious if this is a “old hardware is just better with newer drivers” thing or a “newer Linux kernels optimize better letting older drivers work better” thing

    • @Bannerz
      @Bannerz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DesignDocsWithJames no idea why it’s faster. It’s Ethernet, on a b450 AORUS Elite. So an older board but I noticed that with different flavours of Linux there was varying network speeds. I think Debian was the worst, so maybe it’s the way each one handles network?

    • @DesignDocsWithJames
      @DesignDocsWithJames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s absolutely bizarre friend, I have a few b450 devices on my network and have for years and never experienced this, I genuinely though you were going to throw an old sandy bridge era LAN chipset at me lmao. If that’s the cause you might have greater hardware issues or (more likely) a very overloaded router or potentially even bad cables. I’ve had (in my professional life) bad cables fuck everyone over - my favorite was an executive hanging his coat from an Ethernet anchored to the wall behind his desk, eventually the weight of the coat and stress from the coat hanger pulling on the anchor and cable wore the cable out internally lol.

    • @Bannerz
      @Bannerz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @DesignDocsWithJames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Bannerz ooooooof been there friend. Tbh if you have a very large network you’re a guest on, the Linux kernel is optimized very heavily for network routing so it’s super not surprising that you are getting some benefits over Windows - I just find it weird that it’s also happening over PopOS - there might be some level garbage collection BS or something that is better on Nobare who knows.
      Also don’t feel bad bout a 1070ti - it’s better than what my kid experiences on his RX540 and I still have my 1080 in deployment as my encoder in my capture PC - still an extremely viable card!!!! Won’t do max settings and probably struggles for 1080p60 in very recent titles, but again I know people with even older GPU’s!

    Just as a sidenote, Wayland on KDE is kinda a weird mixed bag currently.
    - Certain bits of KWin are still buggy or broken with it.
    - Still has issues with the clipboard and can break in extended sessions.
    - No session restoration
    Keyboard issues (specifically numpad shortcuts for example)
    And there's quite a bit more. KDE 6 I'm hoping should solve most of these issues in February since it's being rewritten for Wayland from the ground up.
    I've been loving Nobara's no-nonsense approach so far as someone who's been on the RHEL-based side of things for a while. And while some people don't like Glorious Eggroll's Proton's, I consider them modded software, there if you want to experiment, but not necessary. I feel that to be fair, objectively here, building an OS is different than making patched translation layers. And from what I've experienced here, GloriousEggroll has really pushed to make sure there's a balance between tweaks and also having a stable system. Also, having a properly tweaked OBS, one-click preinstall for Davinci Resolve and directly integrated optional flatpak updates are massive boons for the end user.
    Fun video, thanks for the insight.

    • @DesignDocsWithJames
      @DesignDocsWithJames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For what it's worth (If i recall correctly I discovered this like maybe a week after this video, or 10 days or something) this video was recorded with everything running in Weyland but when I run in X11, games rendered beautifully *until i move my mouse* which upon any mouse movement triggered the half-rate-compositor issue. Great if I was a gamepad gamer, but uhhhhhh, not great for shooters lol.
      I think that's where my real frustration was coming from, the fact that I would switch distros and softwares and nothing would fix it and I was experiencing multiple similar issues under the hood that were entirely unrelated but manifested in eerily similar ways.
      I'm interested in visiting it again in a bit, but honestly as much as I love Linux it's just not worth the headache trying to game on it these days. Kernel 6.0 has launched in the meantime though, and there's been a ton of work in a ton of projects over the past 6 months - there's gonna be a lot of fun stuff to play with. For now however it's relegated to being in my infrastructure or in VM's where I don't have to deal with graphical user interfaces or interact with non-terminal-systems on a daily basis. I don't even really like using my Steamdeck lately even (though that isnt really anyones specific fault outside of Linux being kinda meh right now due to every project ever going through massive rewrites) :(
      Sure, Glorious Eggroll's software has a place, but as I stated in the video I don't philosophically agree with what it is, and I also have issues with a lot of the patches that are put into place. It's (meaning Glorious Eggroll Proton as well as Nobara) coming from a very well intended place and it helps people get into Linux (as you said, things like the one click Resolve installer) which is always a bonus. I just don't philosophically like the idea of a lot of that from a Linux standpoint, because I have the opinion that providing those kind of things, *while 100% necessary in an effort to get to the "Year of The Linux Desktop"* kinda is antithetical to the Linux experience. Idk - freedom is great and it's what keeps people from playing with Linux lmao. But I also feel like, the freedom is *why* people choose Linux.
      My issue with GE's stuff is moreso just that it enables bad habits and causes people to recommend it blindly because "it fixed my issue" not really realizing that the patch that GE put into place (completely arbitrary not real example inbound) will write like, 8x as much data to the SSD causing early death of the hardware, or (actual real and true example) something like wasting many gigabytes of disk space because you have to have 25 different copies of a runtime installed for each individual game you want to play instead of actually fixing the core of each issue like Proton as the parent aims to do)
      Again, 99% of this is me being opinionated asshole :D I dearly pray for the day that I can move to Linux fulltime. It's closer than it's ever been in my life and I am so ready for it. But we aren't *there* yet, and it feels like we're backsliding quite a bit.
      I just hope it'll be worth it longterm :)

    right now there’s a problem though the main developer and the one and only developer that’s maintaining this distro, as at a summit for speaking about linux so he won’t be able to update the operating system for example, to the major new Nvidia driver 545 that just released for another two weeks or more. We have no idea when or how long it will take. I do agree with others that say this is a concern that if something happens to him that the entire operating system will be destroyed.

    I had a similar experience with Fedora when it comes to playing games and the system in general.
    Literally my framerate was BS (though have on mind my ""gaming"" laptop is an unknown HP, Ryzen 3 laptop with 16 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD and a 1TB HDD), TF2 was lagging, Minecraft was... playable but barely... the whole system felt slowish.
    And I haven't tried gaming in Linux anymore. But now... thanks to this video I may try Nobara and see if I can get my games to run (Project Zomboid, SWTOR, TF2, HL2, and Minecraft are basically the games I used to play on Windows, obviously in the lowest settings possible xD)

    • @DesignDocsWithJames
      @DesignDocsWithJames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The only one I would object to and that’s just because I have zero experience with it, is projec zomboid, that’s a “at your own feel” kinda thing - I know the name but never played it and don’t know the engine. The rest should perform basically more or less how they performed on Windows - if not then yeah you are experiencing what I am. And I’m really sorry that you are :(
      Ryzen 3 tier chips aren’t exceptionally amazing, neither are the spec demands for tf2 or hl2 - I played them on laptops a fraction of the strength on launch in the early to mid 2000s, so if there’s a problem it’s gotta be either something else with the laptop that would show on Windows, or it’s the same driver bug I’m seeing.

    I would love to switch to linux but for some reason my CPU just overheats on linux and i really don't know what to do. On windows i just put my cpu (its a ryzen 5 3600 i forgot to mention) on 99% to it's maximum frequency and on linux i can't do that and if i can do (as far as i can see) i have to look frequency numbers and put it on terminal thing and my brain just don't can do that (i don't like numbers and terminal is kinda harsh for as a beginner). My cpy temps on windows rarely surpass 60 c° and on linux it reaches 80 c°, and i know, linux is different from windows it rules power different, and i tried different solutions like auto-cpufreq, thermald and none of these options worked (thermald breaked my FPS for some reason). Anyone can help me with that? And more information, i was using nobara "original iso" (One that uses gnome but with personal customization with glorious egg-roll to like kde).

    • @DesignDocsWithJames
      @DesignDocsWithJames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I guess my first question is why are you trying to lock your frequency to max via software? If you want to do that you can just disable precision boost overdrive in your bios and….i forget the name offhand for the other setting but there is a setting for “always run at maximum frequency”.
      If you’re doing it for performance gains, I guess go ahead but you’re hurting yourself in most games more than you’re really helping, zen 2 is incredibly responsive with its frequency ramp that you really should just leave it alone and let it ramp up up the cores you are actually using and ramp down the ones you aren’t - that way you can actually obtain *higher* per core performance since you have more thermal headroom to boost the let’s say 4 cores your game is using since the other 8 cores or whatever are idle and doing nothing and can scale way down.

    • @aguyininternet632
      @aguyininternet632 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DesignDocsWithJames So, i don't do that for performance, if i run anything on 60fps i'm happy, i'm more a casual gamer then competitive stuff. But i lock the frequency because i getted the defective batch of ryzens, this batch always run on maximum frequency even if i am doing nothing on computer, and for some reason (i really dont know why this solves the problem) if i put 99% of maximum frequency instead 100% on windows power plan, the cpu simply works fine, no perfomance gain neither degradation, it just lows the temperatures and make everything fine.

      So in full disclosure from a Linux nerd, it’s easy to trap yourself in the “nobody used xyz setup and it sucks when I need help” framework. Linux’s appeal is in the freedom, if you aren’t interested in the freedom it’s a hard thing to sell.
      That said, Nobara is Fedora based. Fedora is notorious for being used among the most hardcore of Linux Stan’s - an equally dangerous game to play. So many people love to just feel smug and superior.
      You don’t need to limit yourself to just Nobara support, general Fedora support will also go a long way - but to be frank, I - a Linux system administrator who’s day job is thousands of Linux systems, wants nothing to do with fedora and it’s systems, they’re too pretentious. :)
      If you want to ease yourself in, maybe try Linux Mint - it’s where I started and is the “easy mode” flavor of Ubuntu. Ubuntu proper is also historically very beginner friendly.
      If neither of those sound appealing then I hate to be that guy but Linux is not and will probably never be a straight drop in replacement for windows. It will take some time and uncertainty. Go slow - start with a virtual machine. Get comfortable. If you commit full stop right away it’s gonna be rough, it’s like trying to to use a modern cell phone if you’ve only written letters to people.
      Give yourself some credit tho - you took a leap 99% of the population never will! It just takes practice and you WILL absolutely 100% break shit - it’s part of the learning. If that’s not something you jive with, well. I don’t have an answer for you sadly.
      For the record I daily windows and macOS. :) that should tell you how annoying Linux can be for a *daily machine* but I also use Linux daily in virtual machines and my personal servers - ignoring my work shit. Everything has a place. :) don’t feel bad if Linux takes some practice, or you have to distro hop to find your daily - that’s literally why I made all these videos!!!! :)

      @@DesignDocsWithJames I use Windows, primarily for games. I can see mods and patches being problematic in Linux. I have Sparky Xfce on my laptop and I've become quite familiar with it to the point where I've customized the Terminal font to that of the Windows Command Prompt and have got Pac-Man 256 running smoothly on the first attempt.
      Games are the only thing holding me back from running Linux on my main PC . I run Windows 7 (security isn't a problem as fewer people use it, it becomes less of a target). There are a few games from my XP days that refuse to run on it. In some cases, a 32 bit game uses a 16 bit installer. I dual boot with XP on another drive and zip up such an installed game and copy it over to 7 and if that doesn't work, well I stall have XP.
      As newer versions of Windows come out, becoming more like a service akin to Apple's, compatibility with older games can break. I think the opposite might just be true of Linux, where compatibility with existing games is something that is constantly being improved upon. In some cases, you might a find a game that you love no longer works on the latest Windows, but might work in Linux, if not now, then maybe somewhere down the road.
      For now though, with literally hundreds of games on my shelves spanning 4 decades, and countless shareware games burnt to disc, I'll stick with 7 (and XP), knowing that they will work. Besides, the only reason I can dual boot with XP is by having compatible hardware, for which I have the last and best, which might seem a little dated now but my monitor is 1280 x 1020, 5:4 and can rotate for vertical arcade games in MAME. The resolution is fine for modern gaming on my hardware.

      Depending on your drive, you might need additional drivers. I don’t have any experience with that on the Linux side however, just on the Windows side

    I eagerly await the day when linux actually becomes usable to people who aren't on the spectrum.

      I would say we are probably at that point now. The problem is all of us windows people will have to actually just put in the effort to learn the differences. Just like if I went to a Mac I would have to put in a lot of effort to figure out it. We're used to what we've played with for the past 30 years (ok not quite that long for me) and switching from what you know is hard

      The problem with Linux is that there is no universal installer like in all Windows versions (.exe), in Linux there are .deb, rpm, pup, etc. and apart from third-party repositories such as appimage, flatpak and snap (which in themselves They are like pitata packages so they are compiled by a community who knows who they are), is Linux easy? The answer is no, because if you do not find your package in .deb (debian) you find it compressed in tar.gz or similar, which translates to the use of the terminal, and that does not mention the dependencies (libraries), in other words In Windows with one click you install your game and with another you install the libraries (dependencies in Linux) however in Linux if it is not through the console or through third-party stores (flatpak, snap and appimage) you have a big problem in Linux

      Yeah, I literally cannot find anyone else with similar issues or any info on it online. I almost nearly thought I wouldnt be able to get it on video because it’s so bizarre. Gotta be some extremely weird combination of current software and my current hardware.

      legally I can’t commit one way or the other, I hope you understand. But Linux is an open platform and if you decide to put bara on it, well…. I just don’t know why you wouldn’t just do Bara Linux at that point but if you really feel like being an anarchist, Linux is open and you could feasibly make these decisions…… 🫣

    For me HoloISO are easier to get Nvidia Cards up n running. Ok i am not a Linux User and use Linux more in embedded or baremetal Environment. But HoloISO are in this point much straight forward than nobara.

      To be fair, HoloISO is designed first and foremost to be specifically for gaming as it’s a reproduction of the official SteamOS used on the Steam Deck, so comparison to a full blown desktop OS might be a little unfair. Depends on your use case!
      Interesting to hear that Nvidia works with it now, last I heard Nvidia drivers would straight up break the distro. I know Valve said they were really working on that, so I’m super happy to see it coming together finally!

      At 60fps the dropped frames are noticeable and they are much less when rendering at 120. The idea wasn’t to show off 120hz gaming on Linux or whatever - more so to try and show the issue on camera which lead to all that weirdness in the video.
