Hey Mr. Ballistics, I have an idea for your splash tests. I'd put a dish (maybe a cheap casserole pan for example) under the jug. It may be a good idea to suspend the jug above the dish by the handle too, so the hydrostatic shock doesn't disturb the dish too much. Then, when ya shoot the jug, most of the water is splattered around, but some falls into the catch dish. You can then measure the amount of water in the dish to get a general idea of how powerful the bullet was. My theory is the more powerful bullets will leave less water in the dish after the shot. Not a completely scientific test, but at least it's quantifiable.
8.6 is pretty extreme, especially in how niche it is. if somebody wants it, cool but it doesn't really serve much more of a purpose than 300 except in very specific situations, and you are going to pay for that difference with every shot you take.
Says the poors that don't own an 8.6 In subs and short barrels, 2x the energy at the muzzle and 90% of that energy out at 300yds with 8.6 vs 300BLK The only real reason 8.6 is expensive to shoot is the ammo price. As more guns are developed and more ammo manufacturing happens, which it will because of the benefits, the price comes down. Sure, 9mm, 5.56 and .308 are cheap, but each of those have disadvantages too. Energy at range with 9mm Low overall energy/barrel length loss with 5.56 Recoil/capacity/weight/ barrel length with .308

The concept of subsonic rifle rounds is pretty cool. Anything past 50 yards and whoever you’re shooting at will have no idea where the bullets are coming from. But if you’re looking for superior stopping power, a subsonic bullet just won’t do it. Unless it’s something like a 12 gauge slug or a 45 ACP or something of that nature. I have yet to find a 300 blackout round subsonic that will actually expand like it says on the box. I’ve been shooting 220 grain hollow points and although they are stupid, quiet and very fun I am very disappointed in the wound channels they produce. They actually do less damage than Any 9 mm cartridge. I have tested including FM J. They are just great whole punchers. In my opinion, something like that is good if you plan on taking a more accurate shot at range. Although you would have to hold over a good bit more it tends to be more accurate when you get into those heavy loads. I think that’s where the 8.6 blackout would out perform the 300 blackout. Of course, a slightly longer bullet with more mass is going to be more accurate at range, but in my opinion three or 400 yards is your absolute max even with that cartridge. Now I know everyone has seen a video of people shooting 300 blackout subsonic out at 500 yards. I personally seen it myself and I know it’s capable even if you hold over 700 feet.😂 but with that being said, do you really wanna have to depend on a whole puncher at that distance? I honestly don’t think it would have enough ass to penetrate more than a half an inch or so. I get it. We are pretty fragile as humans, but I would not trust the bullet at that range at such a low velocity. if you were trying to be covert and not give anybody a tip you were there and I guess it makes sense but the 8.6 blackout is just a niche round. Coming from someone who wanted one desperately and tried it out and I was really hoping it would be better but it’s just a slightly better 300 blackout. For all that I would say use a real heavy 4570 with a good suppressor.
Hey banana on your tilting table forget those flimsy little end pieces you got going on and use a car scissor jack right in the middle. Then you can use the drill to move it up and down easily and it’ll support as much weight as you put on it. for the table top if you can find a flat piece of AR 15 steel and mount it on there any bullets that angle down will just get angled back up. I really enjoy your channel by the way. Thank you.
Nice video but it's a lot like comparing a 12-gauge shotgun to a 20 gauge. Really no comparison. But it is nice to see the difference in the two none the less. Fun video to watch.
It was NOT "concrete", but "cinderblock", which typically has about 1/3 the strength of concrete as "cinder", or "Fly ash" is a lot weaker than the stone aggregate used in concrete.
.338 spectre is the better cartridge (.338 arc of they offer more loads ) . 180 grn accubond tipped @1950fps ,200 grn accubond or jsp @1760fps ,225grn jsp@ 1680 fps , 250 grn @ 1450 fps OR subsonic loads , and 300 grn subsonic loads. In an ar-15 with 16" barrel . The spectre uses 6.8 spc magazines and bolt face . The extractor is slightly different . SBR ammunition has everything to get a person started with .338 S , including reloading supplies and their uppers and rifles have a 1 moa guarantee with sbr factory ammo. Other places offer spectre specific 300+ grain bullets for reloading and at least one other place has loaded ammo. Plus it uses standard 9mm pistol cans for suppressing it . This is one of the best intermediate eastern woods hunting rounds made . It was designed by the same guy who designed the .458 socom ,another outstanding cartridge and is also @ SBR . .458 S is basically a micro .45/70 for modern rifles. 300 grains @ between 1800-2000fps (load depending) from 16" barrels . 405s @ 1600-1800, 500 @1400ish or 1050 =subsonic , 550 and 600 grainers @ 1050 . IMHO 6.8 spc II , .338 Spectre and .458 socom are the best alternate AR-15 Cartidges. 6.5 Grendel , .350 Legend and .50 beowulf are the next best. (.400 L has potential ) 6mm arc,6mm spectre and 6mm ppc are all the best target shooting and long range varmint choices IMHO . .22 arc and .224 valk. And .25 sharps bros are also very good choices but need help. The .25 sharps has serious potential but is not well known . It replicates the old .250-3000 savage and early .257 Roberts with 87 grain bullets @ 3000 fps and 100 grainers just north of 2700. .300 blk and .450Bm are very good, but not the best of choices except for being commercially popular and available in more places due to that. 8.6 blk is for a larger gun,and is vastly more expensive than .338 Spectre for guns and ammo. .338 S is about 600 for the upper and 25-50 for factory ammo . If it became successful that would all go down .
Call me weird, but I loved the sand test. If you are trying to gauge how much penetrative power a round has, why would you think the sand test is boring if that is the whole point of the video?
Ive heard that .300BLK has zero upsides to 5.56 NATO *other than* being reliable in subsonic. The 8.6 however, looks really interesting. Apparently 8.6 needs like 1:3 rifling (but can handle 1:1?), so quite a bit of rotational energy to dump on target.
an AR15 with an internal buffer system and long stroke piston? you mean an AR18? I love those. is a 30 cal rifle is an AR10 and a 22 cal is an AR15, and the internal buffer and long stroke gas piston adds another 3 ARs, is a .308 AR with internal buffer and long gas stroke piston, an AR13?
@BananaBallistics I think 8.6 & 300BO are anti climatic. However I am very interested in seeing Hornady's newer .338Arc versus the 8.6 and which ends up being the better of the two. However to be transparent, I leaning more towards the 338Arc, considering it can be used with an AR platform.

It's really hard to pause the first time through a lot of videos so I can read the information. And I do enjoy nerding over numbers 😁
8.6 blk is doing what it was designed to do, which is not shoot through metal. 0-400 yards, no recoil, quiet for hunting, in conjunction with NVGs. The fact it will go through wood and would still hit the target fatally is promising.
Try bi-metal jacketed bullets. It's the kind that a magnet sticks to the whole jacket equally. In 556 m855, just the tip will stick and near the base won't have any stick. I have a 556 in 1 in 7 twist and I fear the auto fragmentation in mid air. Never happened with the bi metal jacket rounds.
I've had 300BLK and the only benefit I've experienced is for pistols or SBR's compared to .223/5.56 9mm AR pistols get better performance when considering energies and price, IMHO. I do have an 8" 8.6 Blackout pistol and consider it leapyears better than 300BLK in sub and super in a pistol AR. Marginally better than .308, and less beneficial than 6.5 in rifles.
I am not surprised because the round is fundamentally silly. Supersonic, like .338 Federal, it would have definitely found a niche use, but 220 gr .300 BLK ALREADY has issues with reliably expanding. By adding more mass that has to be expanded with the same low velocity, you have a recipe for failure.

Helpful information, always enjoy. Thanks
Fun to watch you, will never own either of these, but entertaining none the less.🇺🇸👍🇺🇸
man banana republic doesn't disappoint!
Thanks for the info on the ultradyne chassis.
1:3 rotation makes the 8.6 a very effective round in soft targets. Subsonic suppressed is a dream!😌 I love the maker rounds, I have them for both of my blackouts. I wish I had a 1:3 barrel for my 300 blackout. Love it!
Man that evil crow!!!
Have both, love both! 8.6 suppressed is so quiet it sounds like an air gun.
I'm only here for the crow drawing😂
Bro, you got 8.6??
That's wild, nice. Now on to the video 😀
The spall coming off of that steel is likely to kill. Kind of impressive 👏
good timing. I got my 8.6 suppressor stamp approved this week
Good comparison, thanks banana man
All I gotta say is, I neeeeeed a Boombox...my Honey Badger needs a friend...
I built a 338 Spectre back in 2015. It's still one of my favorite. 300gr subs carry plenty of energy out to 300-400 meters.
The Spectre never got the respect it deserved. Maybe it being a subsonic only round.
@@garybraddock9890 i load them supersonic at 185g and sub at 280-240. I think it's becuase the parent cartridge is less common. 10mm mag pistol. Though, i see some say it can be done with a 6.8SPC. Also, not super common...

my UNviewed opinion. 8.6 should rule given mass size and amount of powder pushing it (energy dump)...now on to the tests!
Jeebus CROW, that 342-grainer is positively an ANTI-TANK ROUND! Good GRAVY!
Yea,, should be a pistol with suppressor
i know these aren't the most scientific but these are good videos to get a general idea and they aren't an hour long
Banana Ballistics is starting to grow into that voice of his.
8.6 is pretty extreme, especially in how niche it is. if somebody wants it, cool but it doesn't really serve much more of a purpose than 300 except in very specific situations, and you are going to pay for that difference with every shot you take.
Yeah unless you are hunting polar bear with a suppressor 😅 It's just an awesome gun.
Says the poors that don't own an 8.6
In subs and short barrels, 2x the energy at the muzzle and 90% of that energy out at 300yds with 8.6 vs 300BLK
The only real reason 8.6 is expensive to shoot is the ammo price. As more guns are developed and more ammo manufacturing happens, which it will because of the benefits, the price comes down.
Sure, 9mm, 5.56 and .308 are cheap, but each of those have disadvantages too.
Energy at range with 9mm
Low overall energy/barrel length loss with 5.56
Recoil/capacity/weight/ barrel length with .308
@dastarddizaster i own a Q fix and think 8.6 is stupid. That said i like to poach with it bc its pretty quiet when im on federal parkland 😆
@davidabest7195 Why do you say it's stupid?
Not looking to argue...I wanna hear why.
I know the ammo is expensive and limited.
I also know it's a tad overkill when compared to 300BLK.
@@dastarddizaster weird flex lol imagine calling people poor for not wanting to get invested in a niche cartidge when there is dozens of other options. Doooooosh
Can't wait to see these vs 338 ARC
Im picturing the 8.6 flying like a 203 round where you can watch the fucker as it heads down range
Interesting new 300 BLK ammo from Phantom Defense. The "Spicy Boi" 85gr 300 blk does 2450 fps out of a 5.5" barrel and 2630 fps out of a 10.5" barrel.
Compare to 556 at 2185 fps out of a 7.5" barrel (have no 5.5" data) and 2500 fps out of a 10.5" barrel.
Damn those special 8.6 rounds are awesome.
Edit: crow 2 looks more like a woodpecker.
Thank you.
Now we need to add .338 arc to the lineup
The second one wasn't no Crow that was a sparrow with a hat😂
Such a great channel where you get to watch this guy beat it out on steel.
Oh wait....what? 😮
Nice video but it's a lot like comparing a 12-gauge shotgun to a 20 gauge. Really no comparison. But it is nice to see the difference in the two none the less. Fun video to watch.
@10:07 thanks for speaking my language 🤣
I love my CMMG! Great color choice too!
It was NOT "concrete", but "cinderblock", which typically has about 1/3 the strength of concrete as "cinder", or "Fly ash" is a lot weaker than the stone aggregate used in concrete.
Those 350 gr expanders are from Maker Bullets. I use their 400 gr in my 375 Raptor, which kicks 8.6's butt in every way.
.338 spectre is the better cartridge (.338 arc of they offer more loads ) . If it became successful that would all go down .
hate the water, miss the sand
Sand test so boring, bullet doesnt go through, surprise surprise
Call me weird, but I loved the sand test. If you are trying to gauge how much penetrative power a round has, why would you think the sand test is boring if that is the whole point of the video?
@@OlIIlIIO i would alter sand test to maybe 2x 3in boxes or maybe 6 x 1 in chambers and see how far it goes,
@@OlIIlIIO Only very few bullets actually goes through it.
Cartridges may be underwhelming but that Robinson Armament is sweeetttttt
If only every chassis would be compatible to trigger systems that isn't "traditional".
I love those.
is a 30 cal rifle is an AR10 and a 22 cal is an AR15, and the internal buffer and long stroke gas piston adds another 3 ARs, is a .308 AR with internal buffer and long gas stroke piston, an AR13?
wtf are you smoking
@BananaBallistics I think 8.6 & 300BO are anti climatic. However I am very interested in seeing Hornady's newer .338Arc versus the 8.6 and which ends up being the better of the two. However to be transparent, I leaning more towards the 338Arc, considering it can be used with an AR platform.
I ask myself……if I could only have one AR…..the 556 or 300 blk out. So I have both.
I like Your brass catcher. I’ve used several but the scope mounts keep changing, taking away my bullet catchers real estate. Mind letting Us know the Rand You use? Or is it of Your own design? Thanks for the sub tests!
Wow, over 220,000 rpm that sounds crazy. Do you know how fast old basic 180gr 30-06 round would spin out of a 18/20 inch Barrel I'm not sure about the twist rate. I have old Remington 700 and curious. Thank for the great video. Cheers 🍻
At roughly 2,650 fps, that would be 190,800 RPMs at the muzzle with a 1-10 twist.
@@bananaballistics Really wow. Thanks for getting back to me.
If you like Siege Mortar ballistics, the 8.6 is perfect.
The 8.6 isn't meant to penetrate armor, it's meant to impart massive centrifugal energy into soft tissue.

Test a rifle. Explode a rifle. Rebuild a rifle. Test a bunch of ammo in a rebuilt rifle and hope it doesn't explode....
I'd watch it
I do love your videos and all the comparisons, but it would also be nice if you included the cost per round of each type, because that would definitely be a big factor for someone who wanted to shoot very many of any of these.
BB, I know you edit your videos with quick cuts in mind - but when you do chrono work or other maths, is there any possibility you can leave the averages, energy and other such add-on text added during post production for even half a second longer? It's really hard to pause the first time through a lot of videos so I can read the information. And I do enjoy nerding over numbers 😁
This is the first Banana Ballistics video I've watched, so, like everybody else, I have to ask: Is that voice real?
8.6 blk is doing what it was designed to do, which is not shoot through metal. 0-400 yards, no recoil, quiet for hunting, in conjunction with NVGs. The fact it will go through wood and would still hit the target fatally is promising.
Can you compare 9mm out of a pistol and out of a PCC?
Thanks!

Im sending my 220GR 8.6 seeds @ on average 1850 +/- 3 with 27GR of 1680. Getting around 1650 FT-LBS of energy. Just crazy stuff!!!
Two thumbs way up 👍🤘
I've had 300BLK and the only benefit I've experienced is for pistols or SBR's compared to .223/5.56
9mm AR pistols get better performance when considering energies and price, IMHO.
I do have an 8" 8.6 Blackout pistol and consider it leapyears better than 300BLK in sub and super in a pistol AR.
Marginally better than .308, and less beneficial than 6.5 in rifles.
You should get the Ballistic High Speed guys to visit you.

They make a Dissent in 8.6? Cool. my wallet already feels lighter
Thanks for doing this, it'd be more affordable for me to dig for oil in the bedrock behind my home with a .22 lr
The problem with 8.6BO, is that it's the same action length as 338 federal, but drives the same supers around 500 fps slower.
Subsonic 300 grain bullet. Do you need a sight from an M203 to account for drop?😂
Difficult to watch when you state, “1:6 twist is the fastest for 300 blackout”
Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I like the brass catcher bag you used - is that the right word for it?
