      This modem works great in the US with T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T (not Sprint).
      Check out uavpal.com/disco/faq#e3372models for the different models available for your country/carrier before ordering.

    Dustin, all I can say is amazing! What a video. There are lots of things a viewer can learn from this also. How to keep calm during unexpected things that can happen and how to use alternative tools to correct problems and get your aircraft back home. Good job! Looking forward to more flights in the future. Now, where did my finger nails go? Can hardly type! LOL Happy Flying

      @@DustinDunnill There are unboxed ones on amazon for 700 dollars or something I think. Sorry. I thought you were commenting on the water scooter video I recently did 😂. I think it was to new and the public wasn't ready for it. New flyers would crash it since it's much harder to land than a regular multirotor drone. Keep an eye out on eBay or Amazon and you might still find one for under 500 👍

    Mine has been showing zero while recording. I’d bring a cooler, make some flat ice packs (ziplock bags) that you could fit behind your phone, change out when the pack gets melted. I had a laptop that overheated when rendering a video, ice packs kept it from thermal shutdown. Good luck, great video.

  • @Grizz4418
    @Grizz4418 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome video and what a crazy distance you achieved! I’ve had my eye on the disco for a while and you’re last few videos on it have really sealed my commitment to getting one very soon. The cell service connection is interesting but I think I’d prefer trying to upgrade the controller’s antennae hardware first instead even though I’m sure it wouldn’t get 15km. Lol But have you tried any antennae modifications for other drones besides the parabolic lenses? Thanks man and can’t wait for the next video.

    Cell towers (at least here in Europe) have a strong directivity and are not pointed towards the sea. There is no (planned) coverage for the sea. So the signal will quickly die out. Also phones that get warm do "throttle", reducing it's calculating capacity and thus reducing heat. Might have been a combination of these two.
    What you can do, is you can sit relaxed in the car with the phone in front of the airconditioning opening... cools great, and sits relaxed.

  • @_WalkTheEarth_

    How are you so calm when your phone says it's about to turn off? Like, I'd be panicking and all that but you? You just day "nuh uh" and continue using it. That is insane. (and so as the plane. it is really cool.)

  • @esantiago8989
    @esantiago8989 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I love this. Would this work if you used a stand alone mobile hotspot and connect your phone/remote to that? That should help with all the processing the phone has to do. Plus the wifi chips in phones are far less demanding then the LTE chips. Your phone is handling everything there. When a phone gets hot it starts to thermal throttle slowing down the processor in attempt to cool it down, which might explain a almost not usable video feed. I expect some lag thru LTE but it should be pretty usable. Also try a speedtest on your device at the location you plan too fly.
    This is truly amazing!! Can't wait to see what happens in the near future with this kind of tech. I don't usually comment on videos but I absolutely love your videos. You put out the best UAV content!

    would you mind to do some signal strength tests trough the at commands with and without external antennas?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the short antennas I did in first test dbm seemed worse so had them off for this flight. The recent test (video up soon) I used longer antennas in a V configuration and seemed to work better. Not really any dbm gain when tested at home on computer but worked good in flight.

    • @eltereding
      @eltereding 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the reply, i purchased the "5dbi" from aliexpress too, lets see in a few weeks. for max range the antennas should be put parallel and not in any "V" configuration, with a 45° or 135° configuration you would cover a wider range on each on but not combined, so maybe turning and circling is better, but for max range(straight) parallel should yield the best result.

    If you are flying with 4G why did you have to be in line of sight? Could have gone into some shade or AC to fly and keep your phone cool right?

      The SynDRONE Effect it's a modded battery. You carve out some of the fome and put the hobby battery with the same connector. The regular battery is 25-30 minutes if I remember correctly.

      Parrot insisted on me updating to 1.7.0. I had linear landing issues, either overshoot or undershoot. I reluctantly updated to 1.7.0. I hit RTH, took control when my Disco "Hawkeye" was overhead. I manually brought Hawkeye on approach to my clubs airfield, hit land, instead of the expected linear landing Hawkeye banked to the west and landed deep in wetlands that are not accessible. I made my best effort, but it landed in an area where mud is waist high. I emailed Parrot.. They put in an order for a replacement.
      What battery did you use to make that flight ?
      Again, awesome flight!

    What phone do you have? It might have cooling issues if your back isn't made out of aluminum or glass and the battery or the processor don't touch the back for cooling. And you should have stopped charging when your phone got too hot.

    for anyone who wants to do the mod as well:
    *CHECK YOUR 4G NETWORK COVERAGE!*
    I am very happy with my Disco and wanted to do the same mod so I got a 8GB flat only to find out that here in germany there is almost no connection good enough except from the city surroundings, where I'm not allowed to fly anyways. Now I spent a shit ton of money for an 8GB flat and cant even use it. So again my advise is: Check if the country you wanna fly in got a good 4g network coverage!

      1.4.1 performed the best for me.
      I am going to apply clear monocote to the bottom of the wings and fuselage before the first flight.
      Parrot sent me an entire FPV Disco kit to replace my Disco!

    I'm trying to figure out why you would get better connection without the antennas? How did you come to that? That's so strange.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The wrong antennas can make it worse. Many users find better signal with no antennas for some reason. Probably because they need the correct antenna for the cellular frequency band in their area

      @@DustinDunnill Thanks for the quick reply. I'm visiting your channel and some others regarding this 4g disco mod. I've been flying fixed wing on the 70cm and 1G3 frequencies for about 5 years now. I've been watching this development the past few months and was really excited to get into it. The Disco being discontinued was discouraging though. I do see Amazon has a few Discos in stock. I may go ahead and pull the trigger and get this going. Thanks for the great videos. Happy flying!

      I would say better to take a standalone 4g router. I have one that can either be used as a 4g->wifi router, or connected directly over USB as a 4g Modem. Still I find it odd that a phone would heat up that much, that sounds a bit weird. And yes it has a battery pack, it even doubles as a powerpack to recharge your phone.

  • @billsomrak

    Very cool flight. Disappointing about the phone over heating and the video lag, etc, but in the end, you completed the trip. Perhaps bringing several devices to 'share the load' might help. I wonder if you can use this in conjunction with a waypoint flight, just using the 4G to receive video & telemetry. Nice landing. We'll watch for future adventures. Mahalo!
