Finally got my contractor's license a few days ago after 7 years in construction/remodeling and 3 years operating as an unlicensed handyman. It was a major psychological hurdle for me.

Not hopefully man. You're doing it! Your dad is right. Learn everything so that way you know what it takes to do the job and then you can pay accordingly. Keep your eyes on the prize and the only way you fail is if you give up.
One thing to learn young man is make every effort to be the best you can possibly be. That way, your work, compared to others will outshine them. That may mean you absorb unexpected expenses and not brow beat the home owner for more money. Take the loss and chalk it up to education expense. That will go a lot farther than a big fight where you end up on Judge Judy before millions of viewers as a shady contractor. I genuinely wish you the best in your career helping your DAD. Every once in a while, ask about the less fortunate in the area(elderly,handicapped,etc) you are working and offer to do some free work even if it is no more than an hour of yard cleanup. I guarantee, that will be the least expensive advertising your company can engage in.
It's crazy you can get a trade school education on youtube just researching videos and watching diy. It's like a career path these days and you can start even in high school. How many people has youtube helped, countless millions. So glad we have this and I get to be a part of it. Good luck out there everybody. You guys are lucky. Your dads and uncles teach you to do this stuff early. I grew up with parents from a different culture from yours. I'm just now at 32yo learning the value of the skills you already know how to do.

I all have several friends who work handyman jobs. They stay busy. One use to build houses start to finish and quit doing that to be a handyman because it was less stressful. One was an engineer (mechanic) on a tugboat. 3 of the 4 don't advertise at all, just word of mouth, the other has a Facebook page. They all tell me the number way that get work is by communicating with potential clients. You going to be late call them, you want to meet a little earlier call them, going to take longer than anticipated call them. Communication and doing good work goes far.
Once you get the city government involved and aware of your business all of your costs go up and your headaches. If you do excellent work, are professional, fair, and priced correctly for the market, you don't need to have a contractors license. There's enough folks out there that need work done and as long as you have good references and superb work to show, you'll have no problem securing new projects.
If you're good at what you do you can afford to charge enough to cover those costs 👍 only hacks stay under the table. And it's a great way to lose everything when you caught too. Not great advice.
I’ve had my CSL for about 20 years. Back when I got it you needed 3 years experience in some form of building. My experience was 8 years in concrete foundations, floors, etc. and about 6 years in roofing and siding, hardwood flooring, framing. I went for the unrestricted license instead of the 1&2 family, it was twice as many questions in the same time, but felt it was worth it. If you’re doing any project that requires a permit you have the ability to do so. The license is for building, not for hvac, electrical, plumbing, engineering etc., those trades need to pull their own permit.
I sure appreciate you making these videos. Most people don't realize how difficult it is. Filming and narrating can actually double the difficulty as well as the time involved in doing a task. Re the handyman rules, I learned it actually goes state by state and in some states handymen (supposedly) aren't allowed to do heavy projects like dig and lay foundations, pour concrete, install the plumbing in a new build, etc. Sometimes they go by dollar amount on the task, I know a guy who got in trouble for accepting a simple painting job that was bigger in cost than a handyman is "allowed" to do. All he had to to, had he known, was price it lower and accept a gratuity under the table. The whole thing is pretty murky. I recently talked to a local handyman company that was hiring, he told me I needed my own truck and either get my own insurance or be bonded. Then he would send me on jobs and pay me by the project, no hourly. I was thinking, "Why do I need you, exactly? I can do this myself." LOL
Nearly 40 years old. Been a carpenter all my life… so a journeyman. I’ve framed houses from the grand up and done all the trim/finish carpentry over my career… I’ve always thought about going out in my own and now this might finally be the year!
I'm in the great state of California where the trades unions and the big construction companies are trying to prevent the little guy from getting a license with all sorts of hoops to jump through. That said, there is light in the tunnel! The State legislature in in the process of passing a Class B2 Remodelers license that I am working on getting. I have spent the last 5 years working on my own (one of the requirements is 4 years experience which if self-employed can be proven with tax returns). It has been a long road but I am really looking forward to being to do jobs over $500 a pop! Great video as always, and thank you for covering this topic.
Because California and unions are socialist and socialists hate small business and want everyone working for the state or a large corp. The last thing they want is the little guy getting ahead and not needing them.
I worked for a licensed General B1 contractor for around 8-9 years in California doing remodels, flips, repairs, deck builds, and just about every trade involved. Luckily my boss was retiring and he wasn't concerned about me going out and taking work from him or it might not have been so easy. I got my license at 26, and I've been licensed for over a year now and operating a home remodel and repair company. In California the requirements for applying to take the test are 4 years in the trade, or in the case of Gen B1( they just came out this year with Gen B2 which is essentially a remodel license and each job you take must have at least 3 trades involved and you are limited on the extent of the work you can preform, whereas B1 you need 2 trades involved and can do whole jobs without limitations for the most part ) as many trades as you can prove with a minimum of 4 trades I believe. My boss had to sign off on the work experience and write in detail the experience I had in each trade, but there are ways of getting it if you do your own home remodels for the same amount of time. You have to at least be journeyman for that 4 years in the trade, or trades if you're applying for a general contractor. You then need to pass 2 tests. A law and business test, which if you know your trade(s) then this is the test you want to focus on studying for the most. Then there's the trade test, which if you're applying for a specific license I.E electrical, and you've been doing the work legitimately and can remember all the codes is much easier. It still took some studying because county to county is different from what the state license board wants to see. Now keep in mind you only need to pass with a 70%, and they only tell you if you pass not what score you got. If you fail they tell you the score so you can see how badly you scored. For those of you who are trying to get the license in California, pay for a school, or don't and pay for the online practice tests. I listened to Cd's on the way to and from work, and attended online classes during Covid lock down, and took those tests until I was getting 98% right every time I took one. If I could go back so I didn't have to pay for so much schooling I would have just taken the practice tests as they were the biggest help in passing the exams. The test isn't as hard as some people may think. If you can read blueprints, remember codes, and study for the law and business you will be in great shape. I know most people pass there first time and there's some that take 3-4 times to pass. The ones that didn't pass right away may have bad test taking abilities and some just don't study like they should. The hardest part really is trying to get the work experience signed off on, and if they conduct an audit for your experience you have to show pay stubs or some form of proof. Also like stated in the video they do sting operations quite often here, even in my small town. I know a tile guy that was licenses ( he did amazing work ) and they trapped him into agreeing to more then he could legally do which is $500 per job for labor & material. The $500 per job really limits you from getting any decent jobs and these terrible people go around ruining hard working guys lively hood and convicting them with a misdemeanor. It's really messed up the state just wants their money from you dues and licensing, although some people do really terrible work unlicensed and screw over their customers so there is some good they are doing. With that being said I know some licensed individuals who I can't believe stay in business due to work quality! Somehow they continue to get work and rip off customers it's mind boggling.. To all you attempting to get your license I wish you the best of luck! Don't be afraid of failing and never get your license, it opens a whole world of opportunity! If you're in CA I highly recommend it so that you don't get busted by a sting. A few weeks of studying and some fees and you and you can do it! Just try to get that work experience signed off on and you'll be through the hard part! The license doesn't mean much in the way of work quality or integrity but for some reason people will trust you way more and it just makes generating a good income much better.

Thanks man really appreciate you putting out some game...its really helps me out alot because I'm a 35 year young guys who's been in concrete since the age of 12 and have been doing it all since...I too am looking forward into the handyman business...I want to be able to just depend on myself...tired of people crying not showing up...sickness...helpers on drugs...just me my truck and tools...walked away from a commercial federal funded construction 2 yrs ago and haven't looked back...been on my own since...and I love it this way...if only I had a twin brother....LOL
No test in Montana. Just pay the money and jump through some fairly easy hoops and you are a licensed contractor. (mainly liability insurance, work comp exemption, DBA with the state)
I have actually been doing work on the private homes and camps for the head of the licensing board for the state, the local DA and two county sheriffs and still afraid of the potential nightmare of getting my license but it's definitely time to make this happen wish me luck. Talk to the head of licensing first. Tell him all that you just said and ask him what he wants you to do next. He knows you'll be nervous and it's ok. Sounds like you are going to be ok.
Growing up in Washington state I had no idea it was that difficult to get a license everywhere else in the country! I got my general contractors license this year in Seattle and there wasn’t even a test, just pay the fee and you’re done. Best decision I’ve ever made.
That’s awesome, I think I might need to move to Seattle. I’m in Florida and in my county you can’t even paint without a license. The requirements for the license are the same whether want to paint or be a general contractor. You have to have 4 years verifiable experience, with at least one year as a foreman. You also have to have a credit score of 660 or higher, or you have to get a surety bond or irrevocable letter of credit. It’s really excessive but that’s Florida for you.
@@alexdrabik7548 Ya I'm in St. Augustine, same here. Though DeSantis did just de-regulate all the class 3/c licenses so all you need is the local tax receipt to do flooring, painting, drywall etc. finish work
I've known this for years.. thank you for having the heart to be honest.. it's a sad truth.. most people go through a friend in the business.. sad but true... then they boast and brag about it.. you could work for a plumbing company for years and they can refuse to sign off on your work.. just because... they dont like you.. or dont want to lose you.. or dont want the competition..

My first thought was exactly what you said. No employer in my area will sign that paper. They don't want the competition, they will look to get rid of you after that, and will make it known if you use him as a reference for future work! I know better than to ask an employer to vouch for me even though I worked at present job for 16 years as a lead man on all things construction. I am in tight with him and his family, keys and codes to personal home etc... but the minute he gets a letter, form or call, our relationship is fractured.
In Massachusetts you can get your home improvement contractors license just by going on .gov website and filling out an application for GIC license and then paying a fee .
In utah you register with the state's department of occupational,and professional licensing then if you are anything other then a sole proprietor working under your own name you have to register with the division of corporations first. There is 30 hours of class time required as well as insurance requirements before applying. So if you are in Utah, now you know.
Watching this again as I brainstorm ways to possibly get some kind of specialty licenses... I'm in this spot now where I've become a self-employed handyman because I have to make my own schedule due to a difficult family/custody schedule, so working for a company doing fresh construction M-F is out of the question! Also I feel it's stupid to have to be a foundation expert if all I want to do is go hang doors and windows for whoever... So even though I'm in California this video is still mostly reassuring, at least I'm a couple counties outside the major cities.

General Contractor - Georgia (NASCLA Exam / covers 15 states total), another feather in my cap / hanging on the wall (taking the time to pass the test is proof that you will see things to the end, no matter how hard). Getting a license won't make you more money, doing quality work and building a strong reputation will (takes time a effort to build, but only seconds to destroy). Establish new goal, Get to that goal. (repeat)
Thats what Im talkin about. Why would I spend the money, study instead of work, drive 2 hours 1 way to test, not to mention all the homework of collecting proof of experience. to make the same money? It costs $300 to submit application then $200 or more for test. The fees never stop. NEVER!!! I WILL NOT COMPLY!!!
I think the obvious way to get experience is just as Handyman did. He's suggested it in previous videos - work for a builder and get the experience then go out on your own. I do realize some people might have situations where that isn't possible - maybe they have criminal history, live in an economically suppressed area, or have limited experience to get that first job. All of these scenarios have solutions as well but it's easier said than done. Being a good boy and getting a license is the obviously difficult and most expensive way to go but in some areas I don't think it's avoidable unless you want to risk losing your business, getting fined, or facing legal action. Handyman is right, politics!
Everyone has a contractors license and just doesn't know it. The Contract Clause which appears in the United States Constitution, Article I, section 10, clause . "No State shall enter into any......Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts". The American people, at any given time or place have the full right to enter into contracts without any interference(impairment) from the State. The State, over time has morphed their way into control for no other purpose than revenue generation. Don't pay your taxes, license revoked. Do't collect sales taxes, license revoked. Just another simple means to demand obedience from those they perceive as slaves. The US Constitution is the SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND , regardless what any two-bit bureaucrat claims,.

@@kingactive8169 yes! Had 5 years of working as a foreman and that itself waived the majority of requirements. Even without that kind of experience you can always ask friends in that field to speak on your behalf.
Back in 2004 when I got my GC license in California you needed 4 years of journeyman level experience, have 3 notarized letters attesting to that and pass an examination of trade and law. I believe its still the same now. That seems easy compared to the difficulty when I moved and got my Hawaii GC license. It was a real pain even though I had been a licensed contractor for 15 years in another state. They didn't care, you had to have 4 years of day to day on-site supervision in a written format, very detailed. You needed letter signed by a CPA of your financial statement, a 10 year credit report and take an extensive trade and law exam. Oh before you are approved to take the test you have to get approved by the contractor license board at one of their monthly meetings where they scour over your experience and your paperwork. If there is any problems you are bumped to the next monthly meeting. No wonder there are so many unlicensed contractors here.

Would love to see a video like this on the state of Idaho. From what I’ve read, you don’t need to take an exam to get a GC license in Idaho. You just need the right paperwork. You don’t need any work experience either. I wouldn’t get a buddy to lie for you. Could end up bad.
I live in South Florida and the obstacles to become a truly legal/licensed handyman are entirely insurmountable. I've been to the process for separate times trying different avenues to gain a license of some kind, but i run into a solid wall of concrete and red tape. A small example. Laying sod requires a license. Minimum 3 years experience working for a sod contractor. Every facet of every trade requires its own separate license and a minimum of three years of verifiable experience working for a contractor in that specific area. Some as high as six years to seven years of experience. Then on top of that every County and every city within the county requires their own licenses. Thats a unique license for every city and county in FL that requires their own license to operate in. Funny enough they do have a repairmans statement (its not even a license) for $25, but the scope of the work you can do legally could fit on a postage stamp. Its absolutely infuriating. Corruption is the only way here. Every GC i know became a GC because of business connections. Father, brother, uncle, high school friend etc. And even still a GC can't legally change a faucet or an outlet. I love FL but stuff like this absolutely kills any motivation.
I actually worked for a unlicensed contractor in Ft Lauderdale. I bet there are more unlicensed contractors then there are licensed contractors in Florida.
In 2021 the state of Florida passed a law ensuring a uniform recognition of handyman and the scope of work they can do. No more county to county, city to city specialty license.
A contractor that manages the full build/renovation of a house in Australia is called a Builder. It is interesting to learn the different terms used in other countries.

Handyman business ....let me clarify: I don’t know a whole lot of guys in the trades. The few that I do know are tight lipped. You’re doing a service for guys like me, with information on TH-cam.
I started as a handyman by the hour 9 years ago. I too have went through my phases one of them being money. I'm now charging fair market values and then I was charging by the hour but always had a good minimum labor charge. I have now to come to the realization in the last few years that quality of life is more important to me that doing handyman work so I am primarily a small job drywall contractor. I do not like estimating everything under the sun drywall solved that for me. I still do handyman work but very little only for those that dont need estimates or for projects that fall on a sheet that I have a price list for. Either way I dont have much time for handyman jobs now I schedule them around my drywall or remodeling which takes up most of the calendar. Here is a little tip for all you young handymen lol. You need to charge more or you wont survive. Winning a job because you are the cheapest isn't winning at all. You just screw up the market values in peoples heads and go out of business sooner or struggle to stay alive. Also referring to yourself as a handyman generally says or implies I'm cheaper than a legitimate contractor.
I've been charging higher too but too much competition screws up my prices and people go for cheaper prices always, 1out if 10 go thru but then they never call me and go with cheaper prices thru word of mouth friend contractors that get a cut out of friends services
This is a great channel/platform for all contractors starting out and us older GOATS who think we know everything, like me. Lol Thanks for creating the channel for all the current and aspiring contractors. I own a company Remodel Free, LLC. in Northern Virginia and we have tests for our Class A license and they definitely follow-up. I have my own unique contracting business model here and do very well with it but have looked at the handyman business for many years. The only thing that stops me, is the constant phone calls and voicemails to return. I sold another business a couple years ago because the phone calls and the invoicing became to much to handle, along with having my current company and I finally let sold it. It had me a prisoner to my phone all day and night and then writing invoices and emails etc.. at night. It was to much after years of running both companies at the same time and I got burnt out. The big cities are where it’s at for big money. The handymen locally, just use Facebook marketplace and Craigslist for building their business, along with wrapping their vehicles and getting a website for legitimacy and Google maps and reviews. My suggestion here for start-up handyman companies and probably most big cities, is to find talented guys that would rather work for someone else and pay them well as subcontractors and avoid many of the tax hits. There’s enough business with just from that little bit of daily marketing, to keep a guy busy. Then once your sure of your subs skill set, reach out to property managers to get that steady stream of business and look for more subs. Don’t ever stop looking for subs, with this business, cause you’ll want to be able to grow with the demand. Of course you have to provide over the top customer service, in order to get the 5 star reviews and encourage your customers to brag you up on Nextdoor.com before you leave and you’ll give 5% off. . Last bit of advice is “never bite off, more than you can chew.” People will destroy you online, if you can’t do what you say or you do bad work. It’s always better to refer them on and tell them everything you’re able to do so they remember that you were helpful and honest. This comes back to reward you, instead of haunt you. Where I am at you have to get insurance for whatever type of work you are planning to do. Hvac, Electrical, Plumbing, and General Contractor (build houses from below grade and up) all take 4 years in the field under another contractor before you can even take a test for any of them to get your license. However, there is a Home Improvement Contractors license that just about anyone can get (felons need not apply). The home improvement license allows for remodels, additions, roofing, siding, windows, etc. but any Hvac, Electrical, and Plumbing has to be done by someone in that field who is license. All work done has different stages of inspections so keep that in mind and it is around $25 dollars per visit by inspector. Permits are required for most things (fences dont require inspection or permits, decks and additions do though). You will need an EIN number, workman compensation for yourself and any others who work for you, and a bond for every city you work in in the state. You will also have to register in any city you plan to work in. Some of these things are harder to get than others and it is a complete wild goose chase finding out where to get it all and when to get it all as well. Bonds can be purchased anytime, ein number anytime, insurance anytime, but workman comp starts July 1st and expires july 1 of following year. So here, to make it easy, get all those thing in the same week so you can do it all again at the same time every year. Im not going to lie, it is a headache to get started because no one has definitive answers of where to go to get each of these things. Good luck.
In Washington we have general contractor and specialty contractors handyman, painter, drywall etc are specialty contractors only diff is cheaper bond requirements $6000 vs. $12000 We went general so we can do anything but electrical,plumbing or hvac cost $1000 or something to get set up with license,bond and insurance no exp qualifications in Wa. Although I got 25yrs in painting and less than 5 in everything else but we're licensed to do it all.
@@WillDaBeast509 It's just a matter of going to an insurance company that does contractors insurance. Some do the bonds as well or use a different company. The yearly cost depends on your credit like everything else as in good credit lower rates. You can go sole proprietor if its just you or llc, s corp, partnership whatever if you wish but those are more paperwork. Choose a biz name, get insurance and bond papers and go down to the city business license office and you're self employed. My cost to open was $1200 or so if I remember. Specialty contractor is the cheapest way to go , handyman can only do $2000 or so per customer I think so general if you want to do bigger things.
I wish I had taken some business courses before I became a contractor. I knew the trade, but I was really green at the business end of things, which I learned the hard way.
In Florida you have to have a minimum of 5 years experience working for a builder or GC in the state and at least 2 have to be as a supervisor. This must be verified by your former employer, who doesn't have to sign anything if they don't want to. Option #2 , go to a Contracting school like Camtech and get your degree. We have stings here and the local builders association does NOT want competition. Option 3 get a builder or GC to to sign off on your 2 years Experience and have a Bachelors degree. Here a Handyman business is an occupational tax certificate called building maintenance W/ Paint.
It’s all bs. It’s a form of socialism and they know it. Those restrictions are unionizing the people already in there. Keep it a free market and the best GC will win. Plain and simple. Electricians and plumbers in Ohio need 5 years and pass an extremely hard test (for electric) to become licensed in a lot of municipalities. Why should we have to work slave wages for someone else when we already know what we are doing, can buy bondage and carry insurance? The only way the industry can stay competitive, drive down prices of finished services, which in turn will increase the amount of homeowners wanting things done out there.... is to leave it as free market principles.
For most handymen your better off getting a maintenance and alteration license. That will cover pretty much any kind of work normally done. That's what I have and don't need typical contractors license.
That license is actually very prohibitive. You can put together furniture, change a lightbulb, mow the grass, clean houses, and power wash a driveway. You can’t install tile/wood/paint/most of the stuff he shows on these videos. That’s why he emphasized that “handyman” is just a word and not an actual trade. But it depends on your county/state.
I was in business for myself for 8 years or there abouts before I got my contractors license I’ve been in business now for 15 years. I’m in Ca I own a concrete pumping service. I wrote all my letters and a few of my customer contractor friends signed them for me when I submit my paperwork to the CSLB. As far as how often I use it? Basically just when I make new commercial customers I send them my w9, cslb # and insurance certificates. Before I had my CSLB I still had all my other insurances but the main reason for me getting my license was the “grey area” that I was operating my business in. If you’re dealing with a shady customer they can refuse payment to you for services rendered if you are not licensed. Those same contractors don’t have a problem calling you to perform the work but if they’re shady they’ll burn you in the end. The worst part of self employment is CHASING MY MONEY!
I'm moving to east Tennessee where most counties don't even have building departments and it literally takes nothing beyond money to get a basic remodelers license. I believe they said you could do jobs up to $25k with that basic license.
I'm a painting contractor, but I end up doing some handy work on houses. Just walked off a job for the first time today because the client was being extremely unreasonable to be and my employees. I had a job of installing an exterior door and a storm door and the homeowner kept trying to tell me what to do and I told him I have it covered but he kept on and on and finally I walked to my truck loaded up my tools and he says where are you going I told him I have other work to do he needs to find somebody else to give lessons to he was a real ass.
I am a customer that caused a contractor to walk out because he wanted to shortcut my job then move to his next job. I saw the shortcut he was doing and he didn’t like me telling him what he was doing wrong. I didn’t care it’s my house and you don’t short cut important steps. Most contractors throw around the phrase “ I’ve been doing this 30 years this is how you do it.” Its a lie. It’s always a lie. As a home owner you need to know what they are doing because 75% of contractors are bullshitting you in important things. The reason they do this is the same way they learned construction they also learned how to manipulate a customer to have anything they want swing in their favor. Improper methods, improper materials I are common practice somewhere in the project. Keep both eyes open and don’t let them bully you. Because most contractors have bully tactics perfected. You have to be smarter than they are at bullying. I caught 4 or 5 recently lying their ass off to me on things I wanted to have done. I ended up doing them myself. And did a better job! Often times contractors are just handymen or home remodelers just like you and me. And often we like to look at them like they are terrific at what they do. Often it’s not the case. They see you as a house payment for themself and that’s all. Everything else is BS What I’m saying is this. Know how to do the job yourself from A to Z THEN hire a contractor.
In florida no matter what municipal you are under your can only get a contractors license through DBPR....and you have to show 4 years of experience and take a huge test on the laws and the actual codes and workings of the business you then have to be bonded by the state and you have to have a credit score of 700....I so badly wished what you said was able to be done in florida it would make things so much easier

In Oregon, or at least in Lane County, you only need to pass a general construction law test and BOOM you're a general contractor. They barely ask you anything about the work you've done. I guess they figure someone with good management skills doesn't need to know how to build a house if he hires guys to do it. I was going to take my test last year but they filled up the class I was supposed to attend and told me I had to pay for another. Apparently there was no chance at a refund or a rescheduled class. I tried for a while. Too poor right now so I'm saving up for another test sometime in the next 3 months!
In Michigan, you take a 60hr prelicensure course and buy an IRCC Residential code book. Total cost is roughly $800 + $150 for the state exam. You have to renew your “Residential Builders License” every 3 years. In Michigan, the state requires a license for most Trades. You can get a “Maintenance and Alterarion” (M&A) License for specific trades for roughly the same cost, so you might as well get the whole builders license. It’s basically a money grab. But, if a job totals more than $600 (including materials) a license is required for just about anything you will do. A Builders or M&A license is not required for commercial work.

I studied architecture in Central America and currently working construction for a year in California to get my GC license hopefully I can get it soon after this
Where I live, the only option is a general contractors license. They don't have it broke down any further than that. They offer the IRC testing twice a month and the test costs $300 to take. Open book test. You have to have a minimum 1 million dollar liability policy plus be bonded for $30,000 with the city. There is no requirement for previous experience or notarized letters. The license then takes $100 yearly renewal fee plus one hour of continuing education. The continuing education part is basically attending a large meeting with the building department where they go over any building code changes or updates. I have always said that holding the license doesn't mean the licensee knows how to do the job, it only means they know how to look up the answers in the IRC book.
I noticed you do a lot of remodels. And I have a question. I’m pretty new to this but I was wondering is it easier to do remodels because your not moving from site to site or is it easier to do the handyman gig going from job to job. I’m trying to figure out which is best for me. I have one big client and I could stay there all the time but he is slow pay. I get to my limit on waiting to get paid and I leave to do a bunch of gigs for handy work and it’s nice to have a mix but I get worn out toting all my gear. What’s your thoughts.

I think you just saved me a lot of money and an enormous amount of frustration. There is no way I can certify my experience, so there goes that, and in my state I have to have a LOT of certified experience, or else years of school PLUS experience. Gah. I have pulled permits and been the "foreman" for ground up buildings as owner/contractor, but none of that work adds up to the 4 years required by my state. And my city/county doesn't have their own licensing board. 🤦♀
Florida (Miami) has a racket set up where you're forced to do ridiculous hours in expensive classes. I found the cheapest, quickest way to a license for a Handyman is to do the ConEd for a painter, and pay the County Commissioners $330 to respectfully vote yes for your aptly named business. It can't be called, "Dolphin Experience," if you're changing lightbulbs. My instructor gave me a golden nugget: while they're prosecuting unlicensed contractors, the state is NOT prosecuting out of area contractors. They don't have time. Get your painter's license, and you can fix anything.
Here is the ugly side of been a license contractor in California. I have been a license contractor for 30 years. Playing by the rules. We have a contractor license board . Which operates on the notion customers are loving, honest and never lie. So much so when you call them as a contractor there are no options i can only talk to them if i choose option i have a complaint against a contractor then they will answer. So when there is a disagreement and customer files a complaint watch out, as a contractor you get a letter from the board that it might be a violation of the contractors license they don't tell you which one and they don't send you the a copy of the complaint so you don't know exactly what was put in the complaint if this are dishonest people out to screw you up you can't come to an agreement. if this happens the board allows the customer to sue you and this can be from 10 s to a 100 s of thousands of dollars. again you still don't know what license violations. They would advise you to go to arbitration so what ever happens does not becomes public record . Good thing right? Not Really! Now you are at mercy of the board who does no give a shit about you , they give you 3 names of arbitrators for you to choose one. Very fair right? Not really this people are paid by them. California has advertise so much about crooked contractors not making any distinction between a license and unlicensed which are the ones doing this so we got this stigma we are to screw people up. so when an arbitrator has to choose who is telling you the true. well lets stick it to the devil contractor how does he dare contradict a homeowner. We are force to kiss the homeowner ass because if the board gets involve it could be worse. if you loose and you don't pay right away they will suspend your license. Also if you owed money to insurance company or other contractor they can file a complaint with the board and they will suspend your license. It doesn't matter if you are correct and you are telling the true they are out to screw you. If you ever find your self in a situation like that is best to take regular court. Ca contractors board is very bias against contractors.Contractors we paid for this department to exist and they are the ones screwing us up. In cali I had to take a 8 hour test, 4 on the trade and 4 for the law side. Then you also need to have another person with there liscense vouch for you. Then you need liability insurance and have to be bonded
Got my contractors license while living in Aspen, Colorado. Required passing a 5 hour open book test on IRC/IBC code. Did that through Colorado Mountain College. Certified for residential and light commercial construction. Proof of insurance and current business license for your LLC required. With those ducks in a row it was then possible to pull permits and call for inspections. The license there is called a B.E.S.T Card, it has a focus on high altitude mountain construction, severe weather conditions, snow load, frost depth, 100mph wind. During the great recession I moved to Denver. The building department there did not accept the BEST Card as an equivalent to ICC/ IRC/IBC . I was told that I would have to retake the test, that is done through a 3rd party authority. PINTA! Not a walk through thr park. That test is very difficult and requires extensive preparation. Broomfield, Colorado has a code enforcement division that actively drives around looking for unpermitted construction. Lots of bathroom remodels going on. Dead giveaway is the waste bag in the driveway, no permit in the window. Very hard to do unlicensed work, big fines. City needs their revenue

Retired Air Force Civil Engineer. Spent 15 years as foreman, superintendent, project manager on way too many projects. 2008 and bust. Got my state RCLI contractors license right before they let me go. Never used it once - never asked if I was licensed once - and spent about $500 a year maintaining the license. Started my own business in 2009. After ten years of no advertising I have more work than I can handle. My customers trust me, and that is the most important point. Sometimes I talk my customers out of jobs because I explain that economically it would not be beneficial. If they feel you are looking out for them and their well being, you'll have a customer for life. At 61 I'm sure I'll be slowing down, but I also know I can do this as long as I have the physical stamina to do so, and not worrying that some boss is going to let me go from a measly $12 an hour job because I can't run three thousand feet of base an hour. Yes you can make a decent living at it, but don't expect to become King Midas, if you do then you are doing something scrupulous. And I enjoy it!!!! It keeps me fit, mentally active, and being single and my home paid for; I can do things we all should be doing (living a good life). License? What a waste!!

Out here in CA if you make $600 or more a day or on a job, you are required to carry a Contractors License. Yes, they do run stings out here but Southern California is so vast combined with the cut backs with the Licensing Board is it very rare that you will be caught. They typically run the stings through adds asking for (say) roofing jobs and bust people right on the spot. Either that or one of your competition rats you out. If they do catch you, you're pretty effed for 7 years. Here in CA you need 2 years journeyman experience (verified by another Contractor) as a General (B License) or specialty (C or D License). With that you can take the test. The big problem out here is the test is more about laws governing contracting, insurance and employment. If you're not book smart you're dead in the water. For the B and C licenses you'll take two tests. First the law then the trade. My advice is go to a Contractors Licensing School. It's boring and redundant but you'll breeze through that law test. I was reglazing bathtubs and got the D61 (Synthetic Products) license first - which only required I pass the law test. Went back and got C36 & C54 (Plumbing and Tile) after. Other than making you compliant, Licensing does separate you from your landscapers cousin who remodels bathrooms on the weekend - especially on sites like YELP and NEXTDOOR. People will seek the professionals out, wait for an opening and pay your prices.
@@LuisSanchez-wf9zw I went to the Contractors State License School in Van Nuys. Did it years ago when they held classes though today I see it's mostly on line. My brother did it 2 years ago. Best thing about this is the pre-testing they do. Back in 03 we took 2 pretests. When I went to Oxnard to take the law test I was done in 45 minutes - and passed.
In California, they actually offer a handyman license. This state is extremely hard on contractors. Its almost as if the state hates our profession. You cannot take a deposit over $1000. You must also have a contractors license for any work over $500. If you are caught, its a $5000 fine and or 1 year in jail, first offense. Have some fun and Google; Why is it so hard to be a contractor in California.
I encourage you to see who the major political contributors are for the democrats who run the state. When you see BIG political entities like the North State Building Association contributing vast sums of money, and the Rebuild CA coalition which is a heavy, heavy contributor for political campaigns and puts out ads too, for union labor jobs and union labor protections, then you know what you're up against. Are you aware that in California, you CANNOT do volunteer labor in municipalities for projects in which a union person could be doing it? Even if the the union people AREN'T doing it! I was shocked to see the difference between California and Washington, where I visited Port Angeles and saw volunteers helping build a VERY nice skateboard park. I found out, because I saw a fundraising thermometer-like sign, and asked a few people I saw working there (electrical and landscape preparation) how much the park was going to cost, and they both told me they didn't know, because they (and so many others) had volunteered their labor. Several years back, in northern California, a weed choked culvert was restricting water flow, and causing flooding in the area. People asked over and over to have it cleared out, to no avail. So a few people hopped in a dozer and scraped it down. Unions FLEW OFF THE HANDLE, and protested it, but in the face of HUGE public outcry over the fact that no work was done by unions for years, there was no loss of jobs, and they unions looked like the crooked outfits they were. Alas, the legislators put in place a "volunteer bill" that sunsetted after 2 years, that restored the ability to mandate union labor on on public works projects. So THAT's what you're up against!
Yup. California is corrupt when it comes to getting your license. It has created an undeground market for 'selling' referrals for licenses. Pay a dude a few thousand bucks and he will give you a referral for your license. Otherwise, the only other ways to get a license in California is to work for a licensed guy for 4 years then hope he gives you a referral (many don't) or to be an owner builder of your own home and build it yourself, then show the state evidence of that. Very odd. In washington state you just fill out an application, pay a fee, and boom your a contractor. You can literally be apeshit retarded.
Can’t find a license in California for a handyman. You need a business license and maybe a specialty license then are limited to 500$ per project materials and labor. You can’t pull permits but can work on any trade as long as no permit needed. So replace fans, lights, toilets, thermostat, sinks, disposal, outlets and switches all ok to do.
In my california If your lucky your lawyer will need Handywork done in his new office that they are upgrading to. Pay no lawyer fees, dont need to show up in court. He needs his office ready on Monday. Its his lucky day. A handyman fell asleep on his waiting couch (soft comfy leather) and has no problem moving to his new office without a 300 pound wood door for the first week because the handyman took it home to stain it for him. The lawyer got him off with 1k fine, 3 yrs probation

Many contractors just paid to get their license and have little to no real qualifications, so you're dealing with 'jack leg' contractors regardless. I’ve been an electrician for 11 years. Really tired of getting fired from corporate bull shit companies that have no compassion for their employees… got let go from my job at the TSMC plant here in AZ cause i was out sick with that l a b made bug that’s been going around. Well that was the straw that broke camels back and made me realize it’s time to go into business for myself. AZ doesn’t require licensing or permits for jobs under $1000. One thing to learn young man is make every effort to be the best you can possibly be. That way, your work, compared to others will outshine them. That may mean you absorb unexpected expenses and not brow beat the home owner for more money. Take the loss and chalk it up to education expense. That will go a lot farther than a big fight where you end up on Judge Judy before millions of viewers as a shady contractor. I genuinely wish you the best in your career helping your DAD. Every once in a while, ask about the less fortunate in the area(elderly,handicapped,etc) you are working and offer to do some free work even if it is no more than an hour of yard cleanup. I guarantee, that will be the least expensive advertising your company can engage in.
It's crazy you can get a trade school education on youtube just researching videos and watching diy. It's like a career path these days and you can start even in high school. How many people has youtube helped, countless millions. So glad we have this and I get to be a part of it. Good luck out there everybody. I all have several friends who work handyman jobs. They stay busy. One use to build houses start to finish and quit doing that to be a handyman because it was less stressful. One was an engineer (mechanic) on a tugboat. 3 of the 4 don't advertise at all, just word of mouth, the other has a Facebook page. They all tell me the number way that get work is by communicating with potential clients. You going to be late call them, you want to meet a little earlier call them, going to take longer than anticipated call them. Communication and doing good work goes far.
Once you get the city government involved and aware of your business all of your costs go up and your headaches. If you do excellent work, are professional, fair, and priced correctly for the market, you don't need to have a contractors license. There's enough folks out there that need work done and as long as you have good references and superb work to show, you'll have no problem securing new projects.

This is the most straight up TH-cam channel I've watched. I've watched several, of all types.
I’ve had my CSL for about 20 years. Back when I got it you needed 3 years experience in some form of building. My experience was 8 years in concrete foundations, floors, etc. and about 6 years in roofing and siding, hardwood flooring, framing. I went for the unrestricted license instead of the 1&2 family, it was twice as many questions in the same time, but felt it was worth it. If you’re doing any project that requires a permit you have the ability to do so. The license is for building, not for hvac, electrical, plumbing, engineering etc., those trades need to pull their own permit.
I sure appreciate you making these videos. Most people don't realize how difficult it is. Filming and narrating can actually double the difficulty as well as the time involved in doing a task. Re the handyman rules, I learned it actually goes state by state and in some states handymen (supposedly) aren't allowed to do heavy projects like dig and lay foundations, pour concrete, install the plumbing in a new build, etc. Sometimes they go by dollar amount on the task, I know a guy who got in trouble for accepting a simple painting job that was bigger in cost than a handyman is "allowed" to do. All he had to to, had he known, was price it lower and accept a gratuity under the table. The whole thing is pretty murky.
I recently talked to a local handyman company that was hiring, he told me I needed my own truck and either get my own insurance or be bonded. Then he would send me on jobs and pay me by the project, no hourly. I was thinking, "Why do I need you, exactly? I can do this myself." LOL
That last sentence is exactly why I’m here HAHAH!
Nearly 40 years old. Been a carpenter all my life… so a journeyman. I’ve framed houses from the grand up and done all the trim/finish carpentry over my career… I’ve always thought about going out in my own and now this might finally be the year!

I'm in the great state of California where the trades unions and the big construction companies are trying to prevent the little guy from getting a license with all sorts of hoops to jump through. That said, there is light in the tunnel! The State legislature in in the process of passing a Class B2 Remodelers license that I am working on getting. I have spent the last 5 years working on my own (one of the requirements is 4 years experience which if self-employed can be proven with tax returns). It has been a long road but I am really looking forward to being to do jobs over $500 a pop! Great video as always, and thank you for covering this topic.

I worked for a licensed General B1 contractor for around 8-9 years in California doing remodels, flips, repairs, deck builds, and just about every trade involved. Luckily my boss was retiring and he wasn't concerned about me going out and taking work from him or it might not have been so easy. I got my license at 26, and I've been licensed for over a year now and operating a home remodel and repair company.
In California the requirements for applying to take the test are 4 years in the trade, or in the case of Gen B1( they just came out this year with Gen B2 which is essentially a remodel license and each job you take must have at least 3 trades involved and you are limited on the extent of the work you can preform, whereas B1 you need 2 trades involved and can do whole jobs without limitations for the most part ) as many trades as you can prove with a minimum of 4 trades I believe. My boss had to sign off on the work experience and write in detail the experience I had in each trade, but there are ways of getting it if you do your own home remodels for the same amount of time. You have to at least be journeyman for that 4 years in the trade, or trades if you're applying for a general contractor.
You then need to pass 2 tests. A law and business test, which if you know your trade(s) then this is the test you want to focus on studying for the most. Then there's the trade test, which if you're applying for a specific license I.E electrical, and you've been doing the work legitimately and can remember all the codes is much easier. It still took some studying because county to county is different from what the state license board wants to see. Now keep in mind you only need to pass with a 70%, and they only tell you if you pass not what score you got. If you fail they tell you the score so you can see how badly you scored.
For those of you who are trying to get the license in California, pay for a school, or don't and pay for the online practice tests.
I listened to Cd's on the way to and from work, and attended online classes during Covid lock down, and took those tests until I was getting 98% right every time I took one. If I could go back so I didn't have to pay for so much schooling I would have just taken the practice tests as they were the biggest help in passing the exams.
The test isn't as hard as some people may think. If you can read blueprints, remember codes, and study for the law and business you will be in great shape. I know most people pass there first time and there's some that take 3-4 times to pass. The ones that didn't pass right away may have bad test taking abilities and some just don't study like they should. The hardest part really is trying to get the work experience signed off on, and if they conduct an audit for your experience you have to show pay stubs or some form of proof.
Also like stated in the video they do sting operations quite often here, even in my small town. I know a tile guy that was licenses ( he did amazing work ) and they trapped him into agreeing to more then he could legally do which is $500 per job for labor & material. The $500 per job really limits you from getting any decent jobs and these terrible people go around ruining hard working guys lively hood and convicting them with a misdemeanor. It's really messed up the state just wants their money from you dues and licensing, although some people do really terrible work unlicensed and screw over their customers so there is some good they are doing. With that being said I know some licensed individuals who I can't believe stay in business due to work quality! Somehow they continue to get work and rip off customers it's mind boggling..
To all you attempting to get your license I wish you the best of luck! Don't be afraid of failing and never get your license, it opens a whole world of opportunity! If you're in CA I highly recommend it so that you don't get busted by a sting. A few weeks of studying and some fees and you and you can do it! Just try to get that work experience signed off on and you'll be through the hard part! The license doesn't mean much in the way of work quality or integrity but for some reason people will trust you way more and it just makes generating a good income much better.

No test in Montana. Just pay the money and jump through some fairly easy hoops and you are a licensed contractor. (mainly liability insurance, work comp exemption, DBA with the state)

Talk to the head of licensing first. Tell him all that you just said and ask him what he wants you to do next. He knows you'll be nervous and it's ok. Sounds like you are going to be ok.
I work in Kansas City, MO and am swamped with work. As far as a contractor’s license....never heard of her.

Growing up in Washington state I had no idea it was that difficult to get a license everywhere else in the country! I got my general contractors license this year in Seattle and there wasn’t even a test, just pay the fee and you’re done. Best decision I’ve ever made.

That’s awesome, I think I might need to move to Seattle. I’m in Florida and in my county you can’t even paint without a license. The requirements for the license are the same whether want to paint or be a general contractor. You have to have 4 years verifiable experience, with at least one year as a foreman. You also have to have a credit score of 660 or higher, or you have to get a surety bond or irrevocable letter of credit.
It’s really excessive but that’s Florida for you.

My first thought was exactly what you said. No employer in my area will sign that paper. They don't want the competition, they will look to get rid of you after that, and will make it known if you use him as a reference for future work! I know better than to ask an employer to vouch for me even though I worked at present job for 16 years as a lead man on all things construction. I am in tight with him and his family, keys and codes to personal home etc... but the minute he gets a letter, form or call, our relationship is fractured.

In Massachusetts you can get your home improvement contractors license just by going on .gov website and filling out an application for GIC license and then paying a fee .

In utah you register with the state's department of occupational,and professional licensing then if you are anything other then a sole proprietor working under your own name you have to register with the division of corporations first. There is 30 hours of class time required as well as insurance requirements before applying. So if you are in Utah, now you know.

Watching this again as I brainstorm ways to possibly get some kind of specialty licenses... I'm in this spot now where I've become a self-employed handyman because I have to make my own schedule due to a difficult family/custody schedule, so working for a company doing fresh construction M-F is out of the question! Also I feel it's stupid to have to be a foundation expert if all I want to do is go hang doors and windows for whoever... So even though I'm in California this video is still mostly reassuring, at least I'm a couple counties outside the major cities.

General Contractor - Georgia (NASCLA Exam / covers 15 states total), another feather in my cap / hanging on the wall (taking the time to pass the test is proof that you will see things to the end, no matter how hard).
Getting a license won't make you more money, doing quality work and building a strong reputation will (takes time a effort to build, but only seconds to destroy).

Thats what Im talkin about. Why would I spend the money, study instead of work, drive 2 hours 1 way to test, not to mention all the homework of collecting proof of experience. to make the same money? It costs $300 to submit application then $200 or more for test. The fees never stop. NEVER!!! I WILL NOT COMPLY!!!

I think the obvious way to get experience is just as Handyman did. He's suggested it in previous videos - work for a builder and get the experience then go out on your own. I do realize some people might have situations where that isn't possible - maybe they have criminal history, live in an economically suppressed area, or have limited experience to get that first job. All of these scenarios have solutions as well but it's easier said than done. Being a good boy and getting a license is the obviously difficult and most expensive way to go but in some areas I don't think it's avoidable unless you want to risk losing your business, getting fined, or facing legal action. Handyman is right, politics!

Everyone has a contractors license and just doesn't know it.
The Contract Clause which appears in the United States Constitution, Article I, section 10, clause . "No State shall enter into any......Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts". The American people, at any given time or place have the full right to enter into contracts without any interference(impairment) from the State. The State, over time has morphed their way into control for no other purpose than revenue generation. Don't pay your taxes, license revoked. Do't collect sales taxes, license revoked. Just another simple means to demand obedience from those they perceive as slaves.
The US Constitution is the SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND , regardless what any two-bit bureaucrat claims,.

Back in 2004 when I got my GC license in California you needed 4 years of journeyman level experience, have 3 notarized letters attesting to that and pass an examination of trade and law. I believe its still the same now. That seems easy compared to the difficulty when I moved and got my Hawaii GC license. It was a real pain even though I had been a licensed contractor for 15 years in another state. They didn't care, you had to have 4 years of day to day on-site supervision in a written format, very detailed. You needed letter signed by a CPA of your financial statement, a 10 year credit report and take an extensive trade and law exam. Oh before you are approved to take the test you have to get approved by the contractor license board at one of their monthly meetings where they scour over your experience and your paperwork. If there is any problems you are bumped to the next monthly meeting. No wonder there are so many unlicensed contractors here.

Would love to see a video like this on the state of Idaho. From what I’ve read, you don’t need to take an exam to get a GC license in Idaho. You just need the right paperwork. You don’t need any work experience either. I wouldn’t get a buddy to lie for you. Could end up bad.
Here in Michigan, we have the residential builders license. It requires a 60 hr course, and a few hundred dollars in fees

I live in South Florida and the obstacles to become a truly legal/licensed handyman are entirely insurmountable. I've been to the process for separate times trying different avenues to gain a license of some kind, but i run into a solid wall of concrete and red tape.
A small example. Laying sod requires a license. Minimum 3 years experience working for a sod contractor.
Every facet of every trade requires its own separate license and a minimum of three years of verifiable experience working for a contractor in that specific area. Some as high as six years to seven years of experience.
Then on top of that every County and every city within the county requires their own licenses.
Thats a unique license for every city and county in FL that requires their own license to operate in.
Funny enough they do have a repairmans statement (its not even a license) for $25, but the scope of the work you can do legally could fit on a postage stamp.
Its absolutely infuriating.
Corruption is the only way here. Every GC i know became a GC because of business connections. Father, brother, uncle, high school friend etc. And even still a GC can't legally change a faucet or an outlet.
I love FL but stuff like this absolutely kills any motivation.

In 2021 the state of Florida passed a law ensuring a uniform recognition of handyman and the scope of work they can do. No more county to county, city to city specialty license.
A contractor that manages the full build/renovation of a house in Australia is called a Builder. It is interesting to learn the different terms used in other countries.
We call them that too or just say a gc but especially in beach towns there's stylized builders who make millions and millions.

....let me clarify: I don’t know a whole lot of guys in the trades. The few that I do know are tight lipped. You’re doing a service for guys like me, with information on TH-cam.
I started as a handyman by the hour 9 years ago. I too have went through my phases one of them being money. I'm now charging fair market values and then I was charging by the hour but always had a good minimum labor charge. I have now to come to the realization in the last few years that quality of life is more important to me that doing handyman work so I am primarily a small job drywall contractor. I do not like estimating everything under the sun drywall solved that for me. I still do handyman work but very little only for those that dont need estimates or for projects that fall on a sheet that I have a price list for. Either way I dont have much time for handyman jobs now I schedule them around my drywall or remodeling which takes up most of the calendar.
Here is a little tip for all you young handymen lol. You need to charge more or you wont survive. Winning a job because you are the cheapest isn't winning at all. You just screw up the market values in peoples heads and go out of business sooner or struggle to stay alive. Also referring to yourself as a handyman generally says or implies I'm cheaper than a legitimate contractor.
I've been charging higher too but too much competition screws up my prices and people go for cheaper prices always, 1out if 10 go thru but then they never call me and go with cheaper prices thru word of mouth friend contractors that get a cut out of friends services

I own a company Remodel Free, LLC. in Northern Virginia and we have tests for our Class A license and they definitely follow-up.
I have my own unique contracting business model here and do very well with it but have looked at the handyman business for many years. The only thing that stops me, is the constant phone calls and voicemails to return. I sold another business a couple years ago because the phone calls and the invoicing became to much to handle, along with having my current company and I finally let sold it. It had me a prisoner to my phone all day and night and then writing invoices and emails etc.. at night. It was to much after years of running both companies at the same time and I got burnt out.
The big cities are where it’s at for big money. The handymen locally, just use Facebook marketplace and Craigslist for building their business, along with wrapping their vehicles and getting a website for legitimacy and Google maps and reviews.
My suggestion here for start-up handyman companies and probably most big cities, is to find talented guys that would rather work for someone else and pay them well as subcontractors and avoid many of the tax hits.
There’s enough business with just from that little bit of daily marketing, to keep a guy busy. Then once your sure of your subs skill set, reach out to property managers to get that steady stream of business and look for more subs. Don’t ever stop looking for subs, with this business, cause you’ll want to be able to grow with the demand.
Of course you have to provide over the top customer service, in order to get the 5 star reviews and encourage your customers to brag you up on Nextdoor.com before you leave and you’ll give 5% off. .
Last bit of advice is “never bite off, more than you can chew.” People will destroy you online, if you can’t do what you say or you do bad work. It’s always better to refer them on and tell them everything you’re able to do so they remember that you were helpful and honest. This comes back to reward you, instead of haunt you.

Where I am at you have to get insurance for whatever type of work you are planning to do. Hvac, Electrical, Plumbing, and General Contractor (build houses from below grade and up) all take 4 years in the field under another contractor before you can even take a test for any of them to get your license. However, there is a Home Improvement Contractors license that just about anyone can get (felons need not apply). The home improvement license allows for remodels, additions, roofing, siding, windows, etc. but any Hvac, Electrical, and Plumbing has to be done by someone in that field who is license. All work done has different stages of inspections so keep that in mind and it is around $25 dollars per visit by inspector. Permits are required for most things (fences dont require inspection or permits, decks and additions do though).
You will need an EIN number, workman compensation for yourself and any others who work for you, and a bond for every city you work in in the state. You will also have to register in any city you plan to work in.
Some of these things are harder to get than others and it is a complete wild goose chase finding out where to get it all and when to get it all as well. Bonds can be purchased anytime, ein number anytime, insurance anytime, but workman comp starts July 1st and expires july 1 of following year. So here, to make it easy, get all those thing in the same week so you can do it all again at the same time every year. Im not going to lie, it is a headache to get started because no one has definitive answers of where to go to get each of these things.

In Washington we have general contractor and specialty contractors handyman, painter, drywall etc are specialty contractors only diff is cheaper bond requirements $6000 vs. $12000 We went general so we can do anything but electrical,plumbing or hvac cost $1000 or something to get set up with license,bond and insurance no exp qualifications in Wa. Although I got 25yrs in painting and less than 5 in everything else but we're licensed to do it all.

@@WillDaBeast509 It's just a matter of going to an insurance company that does contractors insurance. Some do the bonds as well or use a different company. The yearly cost depends on your credit like everything else as in good credit lower rates. You can go sole proprietor if its just you or llc, s corp, partnership whatever if you wish but those are more paperwork. Choose a biz name, get insurance and bond papers and go down to the city business license office and you're self employed. My cost to open was $1200 or so if I remember. Specialty contractor is the cheapest way to go , handyman can only do $2000 or so per customer I think so general if you want to do bigger things.

In Florida you have to have a minimum of 5 years experience working for a builder or GC in the state and at least 2 have to be as a supervisor. This must be verified by your former employer, who doesn't have to sign anything if they don't want to. Option #2 , go to a Contracting school like Camtech and get your degree. We have stings here and the local builders association does NOT want competition. Option 3 get a builder or GC to to sign off on your 2 years Experience and have a Bachelors degree. Here a Handyman business is an occupational tax certificate called building maintenance W/ Paint.
It’s all bs. It’s a form of socialism and they know it. Those restrictions are unionizing the people already in there. Keep it a free market and the best GC will win. Plain and simple. Electricians and plumbers in Ohio need 5 years and pass an extremely hard test (for electric) to become licensed in a lot of municipalities. Why should we have to work slave wages for someone else when we already know what we are doing, can buy bondage and carry insurance? The only way the industry can stay competitive, drive down prices of finished services, which in turn will increase the amount of homeowners wanting things done out there.... is to leave it as free market principles.

For most handymen your better off getting a maintenance and alteration license. That will cover pretty much any kind of work normally done. That's what I have and don't need typical contractors license.
That license is actually very prohibitive. You can put together furniture, change a lightbulb, mow the grass, clean houses, and power wash a driveway. You can’t install tile/wood/paint/most of the stuff he shows on these videos. That’s why he emphasized that “handyman” is just a word and not an actual trade. But it depends on your county/state.
I was in business for myself for 8 years or there abouts before I got my contractors license I’ve been in business now for 15 years. I’m in Ca I own a concrete pumping service. I wrote all my letters and a few of my customer contractor friends signed them for me when I submit my paperwork to the CSLB. As far as how often I use it? Basically just when I make new commercial customers I send them my w9, cslb # and insurance certificates. Before I had my CSLB I still had all my other insurances but the main reason for me getting my license was the “grey area” that I was operating my business in. If you’re dealing with a shady customer they can refuse payment to you for services rendered if you are not licensed. Those same contractors don’t have a problem calling you to perform the work but if they’re shady they’ll burn you in the end. The worst part of self employment is CHASING MY MONEY!

I'm moving to east Tennessee where most counties don't even have building departments and it literally takes nothing beyond money to get a basic remodelers license. I believe they said you could do jobs up to $25k with that basic license.

I had a job of installing an exterior door and a storm door and the homeowner kept trying to tell me what to do and I told him I have it covered but he kept on and on and finally I walked to my truck loaded up my tools and he says where are you going I told him I have other work to do he needs to find somebody else to give lessons to he was a real ass.
I am a customer that caused a contractor to walk out because he wanted to shortcut my job then move to his next job. I saw the shortcut he was doing and he didn’t like me telling him what he was doing wrong. I didn’t care it’s my house and you don’t short cut important steps. Most contractors throw around the phrase “ I’ve been doing this 30 years this is how you do it.” Its a lie. It’s always a lie. As a home owner you need to know what they are doing because 75% of contractors are bullshitting you in important things. The reason they do this is the same way they learned construction they also learned how to manipulate a customer to have anything they want swing in their favor. Improper methods, improper materials I are common practice somewhere in the project. Keep both eyes open and don’t let them bully you. Because most contractors have bully tactics perfected. You have to be smarter than they are at bullying. I caught 4 or 5 recently lying their ass off to me on things I wanted to have done. I ended up doing them myself. And did a better job! Often times contractors are just handymen or home remodelers just like you and me. And often we like to look at them like they are terrific at what they do. Often it’s not the case. They see you as a house payment for themself and that’s all. Everything else is BS What I’m saying is this. Know how to do the job yourself from A to Z THEN hire a contractor.

In florida no matter what municipal you are under your can only get a contractors license through DBPR....and you have to show 4 years of experience and take a huge test on the laws and the actual codes and workings of the business you then have to be bonded by the state and you have to have a credit score of 700....I so badly wished what you said was able to be done in florida it would make things so much easier

In TN we have a home improvement license that has a $25000 limit. That is what I hold. No test required.

Man AZ requires a business exam and has a 5000$ limit, or you can take a trade exam and a business exam for a 50000$.

In Oregon, or at least in Lane County, you only need to pass a general construction law test and BOOM you're a general contractor. They barely ask you anything about the work you've done. I guess they figure someone with good management skills doesn't need to know how to build a house if he hires guys to do it. I was going to take my test last year but they filled up the class I was supposed to attend and told me I had to pay for another. Apparently there was no chance at a refund or a rescheduled class. I tried for a while. Too poor right now so I'm saving up for another test sometime in the next 3 months!

In Michigan, you take a 60hr prelicensure course and buy an IRCC Residential code book. Total cost is roughly $800 + $150 for the state exam. You have to renew your “Residential Builders License” every 3 years. In Michigan, the state requires a license for most Trades. You can get a “Maintenance and Alterarion” (M&A) License for specific trades for roughly the same cost, so you might as well get the whole builders license. It’s basically a money grab. But, if a job totals more than $600 (including materials) a license is required for just about anything you will do. A Builders or M&A license is not required for commercial work.

You've put in the time, effort, blood, sweat and yes...even tears sometimes to learn the trade so YOU'VE EARNED IT AND IT BELONGS TO YOU. As he says, some places (CALIFORNIA) make it seem to be an impassable feet to attain and/or impossible without jumping through their ridiculous DEMTARD OVER TAXED hoops, but again, you've earned it so go take it. There is a reason some (allot) of Corporations are out of Nevada, Arizona, etc....Places like Ca don't like that and will make their illegal/ unenforceable threats, but We assure you that if you look into it, get your ducks in order and do a little more work, you'll have your license in hand.

I studied architecture in Central America and currently working construction for a year in California to get my GC license hopefully I can get it soon after this
Where I live, the only option is a general contractors license. They don't have it broke down any further than that. They offer the IRC testing twice a month and the test costs $300 to take. Open book test. You have to have a minimum 1 million dollar liability policy plus be bonded for $30,000 with the city. There is no requirement for previous experience or notarized letters. The license then takes $100 yearly renewal fee plus one hour of continuing education. The continuing education part is basically attending a large meeting with the building department where they go over any building code changes or updates.
I have always said that holding the license doesn't mean the licensee knows how to do the job, it only means they know how to look up the answers in the IRC book.

I noticed you do a lot of remodels. And I have a question. I’m pretty new to this but I was wondering is it easier to do remodels because your not moving from site to site or is it easier to do the handyman gig going from job to job.
I’m trying to figure out which is best for me. I have one big client and I could stay there all the time but he is slow pay. I get to my limit on waiting to get paid and I leave to do a bunch of gigs for handy work and it’s nice to have a mix but I get worn out toting all my gear. What’s your thoughts.

I think you just saved me a lot of money and an enormous amount of frustration. There is no way I can certify my experience, so there goes that, and in my state I have to have a LOT of certified experience, or else years of school PLUS experience. Gah. I have pulled permits and been the "foreman" for ground up buildings as owner/contractor, but none of that work adds up to the 4 years required by my state. And my city/county doesn't have their own licensing board. 🤦♀
Florida (Miami) has a racket set up where you're forced to do ridiculous hours in expensive classes. I found the cheapest, quickest way to a license for a Handyman is to do the ConEd for a painter, and pay the County Commissioners $330 to respectfully vote yes for your aptly named business. It can't be called, "Dolphin Experience," if you're changing lightbulbs. Get your painter's license, and you can fix anything.

Here is the ugly side of been a license contractor in California. I have been a license contractor for 30 years. Playing by the rules.
We have a contractor license board . Which operates on the notion customers are loving, honest and never lie. So much so when you call them as a contractor there are no options i can only talk to them if i choose option i have a complaint against a contractor then they will answer.
So when there is a disagreement and customer files a complaint watch out, as a contractor you get a letter from the board that it might be a violation of the contractors license they don't tell you which one and they don't send you the a copy of the complaint so you don't know exactly what was put in the complaint
if this are dishonest people out to screw you up you can't come to an agreement.
if this happens the board allows the customer to sue you and this can be from 10 s to a 100 s of thousands of dollars. again you still don't know what license violations.
They would advise you to go to arbitration so what ever happens does not becomes public record . Good thing right? Not Really! Now you are at mercy of the board who does no give a shit about you , they give you 3 names of arbitrators for you to choose one. Very fair right? Not really this people are paid by them.
California has advertise so much about crooked contractors not making any distinction between a license and unlicensed which are the ones doing this so we got this stigma we are to screw people up.

We are force to kiss the homeowner ass because if the board gets involve it could be worse. if you loose and you don't pay right away they will suspend your license.
Also if you owed money to insurance company or other contractor they can file a complaint with the board and they will suspend your license. It doesn't matter if you are correct and you are telling the true they are out to screw you.
If you ever find your self in a situation like that is best to take regular court.
Ca contractors board is very bias against contractors.Contractors we paid for this department to exist and they are the ones screwing us up. The case of the ungrateful dog that bites the hand of the one who feeds it

In cali I had to take a 8 hour test, 4 on the trade and 4 for the law side. Then you also need to have another person with there liscense vouch for you. Then you need liability insurance and have to be bonded
In PA all you need for a HIC license is $50 no tests, no apprenticeships, experience. You do need $500k liability insurance

same here in mass $150 for HIC ....cannot do any structural work though you need CSL which is 3 years verified experience and a hard test.
Got my contractors license while living in Aspen, Colorado. Required passing a 5 hour open book test on IRC/IBC code. Did that through Colorado Mountain College. Certified for residential and light commercial construction. Proof of insurance and current business license for your LLC required. With those ducks in a row it was then possible to pull permits and call for inspections. The license there is called a B.E.S.T Card, it has a focus on high altitude mountain construction, severe weather conditions, snow load, frost depth, 100mph wind.
During the great recession I moved to Denver. The building department there did not accept the BEST Card as an equivalent to ICC/ IRC/IBC . I was told that I would have to retake the test, that is done through a 3rd party authority. PINTA! Not a walk through thr park. That test is very difficult and requires extensive preparation.
Broomfield, Colorado has a code enforcement division that actively drives around looking for unpermitted construction. Lots of bathroom remodels going on. Dead giveaway is the waste bag in the driveway, no permit in the window. Very hard to do unlicensed work, big fines. City needs their revenue
Get the dumpster delivered on a Friday afternoon and picked up first thing Monday morning.

Retired Air Force Civil Engineer. Spent 15 years as foreman, superintendent, project manager on way too many projects. 2008 and bust. Got my state RCLI contractors license right before they let me go. Never used it once - never asked if I was licensed once - and spent about $500 a year maintaining the license. Started my own business in 2009. After ten years of no advertising I have more work than I can handle.
My customers trust me, and that is the most important point. Sometimes I talk my customers out of jobs because I explain that economically it would not be beneficial. If they feel you are looking out for them and their well being, you'll have a customer for life. At 61 I'm sure I'll be slowing down, but I also know I can do this as long as I have the physical stamina to do so, and not worrying that some boss is going to let me go from a measly $12 an hour job because I can't run three thousand feet of base an hour. Yes you can make a decent living at it, but don't expect to become King Midas, if you do then you are doing something scrupulous. And I enjoy it!!!! It keeps me fit, mentally active, and being single and my home paid for; I can do things we all should be doing (living a good life). License? What a waste!!

Out here in CA if you make $600 or more a day or on a job, you are required to carry a Contractors License. Yes, they do run stings out here but Southern California is so vast combined with the cut backs with the Licensing Board is it very rare that you will be caught. They typically run the stings through adds asking for (say) roofing jobs and bust people right on the spot. Either that or one of your competition rats you out. If they do catch you, you're pretty effed for 7 years.
Here in CA you need 2 years journeyman experience (verified by another Contractor) as a General (B License) or specialty (C or D License). With that you can take the test. The big problem out here is the test is more about laws governing contracting, insurance and employment. If you're not book smart you're dead in the water. For the B and C licenses you'll take two tests. First the law then the trade.
My advice is go to a Contractors Licensing School. It's boring and redundant but you'll breeze through that law test. I was reglazing bathtubs and got the D61 (Synthetic Products) license first - which only required I pass the law test. Went back and got C36 & C54 (Plumbing and Tile) after.
Other than making you compliant, Licensing does separate you from your landscapers cousin who remodels bathrooms on the weekend - especially on sites like YELP and NEXTDOOR. People will seek the professionals out, wait for an opening and pay your prices.

@@LuisSanchez-wf9zw I went to the Contractors State License School in Van Nuys. Did it years ago when they held classes though today I see it's mostly on line. My brother did it 2 years ago. Best thing about this is the pre-testing they do. Back in 03 we took 2 pretests. When I went to Oxnard to take the law test I was done in 45 minutes - and passed.
In California, they actually offer a handyman license.
This state is extremely hard on contractors. Its almost as if the state hates our profession. You cannot take a deposit over $1000. You must also have a contractors license for any work over $500. If you are caught, its a $5000 fine and or 1 year in jail, first offense. Have some fun and Google; Why is it so hard to be a contractor in California.
I encourage you to see who the major political contributors are for the democrats who run the state. When you see BIG political entities like the North State Building Association contributing vast sums of money, and the Rebuild CA coalition which is a heavy, heavy contributor for political campaigns and puts out ads too, for union labor jobs and union labor protections, then you know what you're up against. Are you aware that in California, you CANNOT do volunteer labor in municipalities for projects in which a union person could be doing it? Even if the the union people AREN'T doing it!
I was shocked to see the difference between California and Washington, where I visited Port Angeles and saw volunteers helping build a VERY nice skateboard park. I found out, because I saw a fundraising thermometer-like sign, and asked a few people I saw working there (electrical and landscape preparation) how much the park was going to cost, and they both told me they didn't know, because they (and so many others) had volunteered their labor. Several years back, in northern California, a weed choked culvert was restricting water flow, and causing flooding in the area. People asked over and over to have it cleared out, to no avail. So a few people hopped in a dozer and scraped it down. Unions FLEW OFF THE HANDLE, and protested it, but in the face of HUGE public outcry over the fact that no work was done by unions for years, there was no loss of jobs, and they unions looked like the crooked outfits they were. Alas, the legislators put in place a "volunteer bill" that sunsetted after 2 years, that restored the ability to mandate union labor on on public works projects.
So THAT's what you're up against!
Yup. California is corrupt when it comes to getting your license. It has created an undeground market for 'selling' referrals for licenses. Pay a dude a few thousand bucks and he will give you a referral for your license. Otherwise, the only other ways to get a license in California is to work for a licensed guy for 4 years then hope he gives you a referral (many don't) or to be an owner builder of your own home and build it yourself, then show the state evidence of that. Very odd.
In washington state you just fill out an application, pay a fee, and boom your a contractor. You can literally be apeshit retarded.
Can’t find a license in California for a handyman. You need a business license and maybe a specialty license then are limited to 500$ per project materials and labor. You can’t pull permits but can work on any trade as long as no permit needed. So replace fans, lights, toilets, thermostat, sinks, disposal, outlets and switches all ok to do.
In my california If your lucky your lawyer will need Handywork done in his new office that they are upgrading to. Pay no lawyer fees, dont need to show up in court. He needs his office ready on Monday. Its his lucky day. A handyman fell asleep on his waiting couch (soft comfy leather) and has no problem moving to his new office without a 300 pound wood door for the first week because the handyman took it home to stain it for him. The lawyer got him off with 1k fine, 3 yrs probation
@@TheDesertRat31 that's what the lawmakers want concerned home owners to believe, but in reality all it does is drive prices up for you. It creates a license black market. Many contractors just paid to get their license and have little to no real qualifications, so you're dealing with 'jack leg' contractors regardless. How about talking with the guy and getting a feel for his skills and integrity prior to hiring? Why does a stupid license determine skill?
I’ve been an electrician for 11 years. Really tired of getting fired from corporate bull shit companies that have no compassion for their employees… got let go from my job at the TSMC plant here in AZ cause i was out sick with that l a b made bug that’s been going around.
Well that was the straw that broke camels back and made me realize it’s time to go into business for myself. AZ doesn’t require licensing or permits for jobs under $1000. I’m fixing to install a bunch of EV chargers and make better money than i ever have before. Thanks for your encouragement, Handyman.
