I was 18 years old and dropped my dad off at the hotel to meet my mom for the tea dance. They both survived but it was so scary waiting to hear if they made it out alive. My mother struggled for years with what she witnessed that night. My dad lost several friends and colleagues that night too.

I remember the names of the deceased scrolling on the screen of our 19" Sony picture TV as the tears rolled quietly down my moms face.

I was working in the Garden restaurant on the ground floor of the Westin Crown Center across the street. I was scheduled to leave work at 7:00 pm to go play tennis with a good friend....who was working in the emergency room of the nearby Truman Medical Center.
Neither of us made the tennis game that night.

My parents wedding was that day on July 17th 1981 and my grandpa had the reception set to take place at that very hotel until they called him to tell him they overbooked so they had to change venues...

Milwaukee has a Hyatt, that’s nearly identical to the one in KC. The restaurant that revolves, the open lobby configuration. Construction was halted for months, until the balcony areas were investigated. When I worked briefly in KC during the summers in the mid 90s, I never understood why people never wanted to go to the restaurant. It has a really lovely view of the city.

I was in KC a few days ago. I live in middle MO. but have friends in KC. Going by the Hyatt is still triggering. I was only 5 in 1981 but old enough to recollect. It may be 41 years ago but the trauma and tragedy still haunt and the precious lives lost not forgotten.

Honestly, I am a little bit surprised they didn't tear down the building after that tragedy. I would feel the same way if I saw that building still standing today in 2023. But it is Hyatt Regency and corporations we are talking about so of course they'd want their hotel to stay standing so they could continue to make money.

My dad (well he's my stepdad but he's been the best father figure i've had) told me that he was supposed to be at the Hyatt Regency that day, but something happened where he didn't go. It's scary and sobering to think if he was there that day he might not have met my mother.

Now it's time to show what Kansas City Star went through to expose how Hyatt Regency and Hallmark tried to cover their asses. You want to buy a Hallmark card? Remember this event and buy something else.

It wasn’t Hallmark’s fault and it wasn’t the hotel owner’s fault. It was the fault of the engineers in charge of the design. The skywalks were badly designed.

This was four years after the Tenerife Air Disaster. Shocking.

I am almost positive that RD carried a story about this disaster
