Ina said to Grigor ‘You have to let God in, disease or time does not kill you but ‘godlessness’. The message of the book is the mere fact that NO character including Marek was not righteous enough to receive the ‘light’ or blessings to break the curse that was on Lapvona. Ina simply ends the book telling Grigor and the reader ‘to open your heart and let God in’.
Great analysis! Ina and Grigor were some of the strangest yet most wise characters I think I've seen in her books. And the Shrek comparison made me laugh- I don't think I've ever heard something so far off.
Okay I have see a few people talk about this book now and haven't been convinced to read it until watching this video! Lets normalize analyzing books instead of reviewing them for TH-cam? such a great video ;
I'm happy you really liked this. I thought this was a fascinating novel and I really don't understand the harsh reviews, that feel like many just missed the point.
lol a Moshfegh that is like Shrek now I have to read it! Although I feel like Shrek was more Rest and Relaxation-he wanted everyone out of his swamp so he could just just chill
Disenchanted is awesome, also really enjoyed the point you made about Marek as messiah. I saw Marek as sort of a reference to a modern day self-appointed messiah, maybe not realizing or denying how their actions affect others because they believe that their opinion/feelings are above reproach. One thing I loved about the environment/worldbuilding was how isolated the townspeople were, and how deeply they clung to their beliefs even when it ultimately hurt them.
so happy you liked my marek as messiah idea - i dream of a sequel where we see these isolated townspeople having to deal w/ marek's new ego now that he is the bigshot lord lollol
this is such a well-structured review!! im like halfway through the book now and i really love the way you tackled the various ways faith pierces each of the characters - its actually reminding me a little of john steinbeck's east of eden & to a god unknown (in terms of its sprawling plot + general Fear of God Stuff + fathers & sons) but anywho great review and i look forward to watching more from you
@@kiranreaderI finished the book last night and thought it was awful. The author has a sick mind to write such things. I’ll try another book by someone else tomorrow.
Wow, you're the first person to actually talk about the role of faith in the novel. Thank you. I feel seen :) xoxo Ottessa
lol 💜💜💜
still in awe about this comment, if it's really ottessa i will see u tomorrow at the talk in cambridge :)

How could ina have milk? I’m so confused by that. I found her character disturbing, a child molester. I’m finding the book really disturbing.
hi! you need to suspend disbelief while reading it. are you still finding it to be a tough read?
