I was just going to ask the same question, what wood was it. Isn’t maple worth a lot of $? Gibson Guitars use a lot of highly figured maple on the Gibson Les Paul Custom shop guitars etc! Just seems like a bit of a waste of good wood was all. Bought 2 new Stihl saws today for our commercial firewood business, a MS 661 & a MS 880. They are great saws. Our hardwood here downunders a tad harder than your maple (8.2) on the Janka Hardness scale, & about 920kg/m^3 density. It will bog down both saws pretty quick if we do the same nose boring tests as you just did. Take a look at this 1 minute vid of splitting our Jarrah with a hand forged NZ “Tuatahi” work axe and you’ll see what I mean. Just bought 80 metric tonnes of this stuff to ring up and split, so the 2 new Stihl saws will get plenty of use throughout our fast approaching winter. tree monkey ports a good 362. He is the guy who ported the 661 in the video. Scott is his name 715 456 0494. Been doing it for about 20 years. He can be hard to reach but leave your name number and what saw model you want ported. He'll give ya a call back.
can buy 5 regular chains for price of 1 carbide. (generally). biggest issue usually, is resharpening the carbide. They have their place. I like 404 chain cuz that lasts on avg. imho about 3x longer than 3/8...if you have a saw that can pull it. realy like 404 skip
Don't hate me,,, but all these high powered saws aren't nothing unless you have a good sharp Chain, I'd like to see you do that with a dull chain . Give credit where credit is due.
Teri and TL Stanbro if you are going to run a saw professionally you dam well need a sharp chain that goes with out saying. It's like having a race car with shity tires. I run saws everyday and we all know you need a sharp chain to be productive . But if a guy takes that same bar and chain and puts it on a regular saw it would only be a regular saw it's no different than taking race car tires and putting them on a regular car. It's the saw that makes it exciting and of course the chain is sharp .he wouldn't demonstrate a high performance saw with a dull chain that would be just silly.
gabriel ethier Sir I agree with you when I go to a friend place or on a job I never go with a dull chain. In my opinion the chain calls all the shots. I was cutting this guy down but my saws make the same noise, I have had them ported, advanced, and the cylinder shaved down. I just wish the guys that have these powerful saws give some credit where credit is due 👍keep the wood chucks flying
Teri and TL Stanbro I agree with you. A sharp chain is absolutely essential for any saw to work to it's full potential. The last thing I want to do is "smoke" my way through a tree. Besides ,a dull chain causes unnecessary wear and tear on a saw , and it's a waste of fuel and time.

no. it's just stock chain off the roll. 46RS .063 .404 83dl.
that would be nuts with 3/8 skip, i could just imagine it with .325 skip, that saw would just drop through the wood! lol
.325 is slower than 3/8 at this power and chain length. The cutters are too close together. 325 shines on bars up to 18" and smaller cc saws
