I love how important it was to her to thank her own mother. Her mother, Linda Benanti, is also a musical theater actress and voice teacher, and taught Laura everything she knows about singing. As a mother and and teacher, Linda made Laura the woman she is today.
One of the best acceptance speeches I have ever seen for any awards show ever!!! Laura is so happy and grateful that she won, but she's still very humble and not showboaty or in-your-face. This is how it should always be done folks.
Gypsy was written and originally performed in 1959. This production was a revival (a restaging of an historical piece of theatre, usually redesigned and restaged for a contemporary audience) from 2008. It has been similarly revived in 1973, 1974, 1989 and 2003. It is going to be revived once again next year with Olivier Award and BAFTA-winning star Imelda Staunton as Rose.
There's no words to describe how amazing this human lady is! So incredibly talented and hilarious and yet so genuine and down to earth! While Patty Lupone may have been her idol growing up, Laura is mine!! #QueenBenanti
Gypsy is a very old show but this was from the 2008 Tony Awards for the revival with Laura, Patti Lupone and Boyd Gaines. They all won Tony Awards for their performances.
I love seeing someone accept the award with humility and gratefulness. Laura is amazing and the fact that she loves Sondheim makes me love her even more!
Come see Laura now in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown opposite Patti LuPone (again) and Sherri Renee Scott! After her song in the first act NO ONE can touch her! :D
Hey, that was Thorsten Kaye behind de'Adre Aziza at 0:31-34. He's so hot! Laura should go back to Broadway; she was totally wasted in that stupid Playboy Club show.
It kind of makes me upset that she practically credited the entire score to Stephen Sondheim while the person who truly wrote it was Jule Styne, a visionary song writer responsible not only for Gypsy, but for Funny Girl, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and others.
She did not deserve to win simply because she sang the role far too well. Benanti is an amazing talent and so stunningly beautiful....but there is a reason why the four previous Louises and the two captured on film did not sign well. If Louise can sing, then Rose would have seen her daughter differently. Her casting goes against the text.
I admire her so much. Her excitement and gratitude seems so genuine- I cant wait to see her win some more Tonys is the future.

Alex Meyer Agree I love speeches like that, don't like it when people act like the award was owed to them and become diva like in a very negative.

BAFTA sure but more importantly she was in Harry Potter
Why is everyone hating on her! I saw this when I was SEVEN and still now she is the part I remember most! She is amazing and so sweet amd
I'm literally crying over how happy I am for her!!

Dear god she is such a treasure.
I agree but she's amazing in her role for Law & Order SVU. I hope she does another musical soon!
so totally had that "Defying Gravity" gag planned. she's so adorable
So talented.
She didn't credit the entire score to Sondheim, I think she simply thanked him, because he is alive and Styne is not.
This is so CUTE!!! OMG!♡♡♡
Laura Benanti is the Jennifer Lawrence of the theater. She's so wonderful and honest, and that's what people like myself love about her.
Alex Meyer the différence between Laura and jenifer is Laura knows How to behave.
Arthur! You're standing!
Sadly, he's now gone. RIP.
I love her
Good show!

No shout out to Leigh Ann Larkin? The hell?

I love NPH though.
Seriously though. Lol

Benanti is wondrously talented but was so miscast. She sang WAY too well.
That makes no sense whatsoever.
