    Just to answer a few questions (I'll reply to each of you on Friday);
    Brake Balance: Is going to be covered in cornering, this is literally all about braking into a corner.
    Engine Braking (Gear changing): Is going to be covered in cornering as well, as it's very significant on a per corner basis :)!

      Would you say that really successful trail brake depends more on a set of quality pedals and the input its given, or is it just a matter of trying not to panicky slam 100% on the brakes?
      I mean, im not exactly new to simracing but ... some of these guys on gt sport are ridiculously fast through the corners, like laguna seca for example... Im getting a feeling, since i cannot set any pedal sensitivity at all (unlike on pc) that some of these guys might have an advantage by simply playing on a more decent pedal set - even when driving the same cars. Sure some of it is propper trailbraking and good consistency, but after about two months in on my g29, im thinking on simply just upgrading, because the resolution on the pedals is hmm.. how to put this mildly, childish?? Im sure you could shave off 2-4 seconds per lap by adjusting technique or drive style on a particular track. But to gain 10seconds on a hot lap, I dont know man.. :D

      @@teknastyk , I feel your pain. To run what I feel is a great lap only to see my time demolished by 2 seconds is a bit demoralizing. I have a set of Thrustmaster pedals on a PS4. My biggest challenge with them is the lack of travel from off to on. It seems only about a third of the the pedal movement is actually used. This makes "easing" off very difficult as there is such a small window of pedal use. Often, I thought I was letting up only to realize the last half inch or so of the pedal travel is not being used. I added a stop behind the pedals to ensure when I let up, I was actually letting up. I have researched dozens of videos & comments on the subject, but no one seems to have an answer on how to utilize the entire travel distance of the pedals. Thought about upgrading, but I'm not sure it would be any better.

    • @teknastyk
      @teknastyk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scottraines6622 well it depends on the sensor used.. ive seen upgrades for g29 but im not sure about trustmaster. What you are looking for is a loadcell upgrade for your type of pedals. Ive found also that bodner cable for g29 thats suppose to add 2bits more to the resolution of the pedal. Short travel isnt a prob. as much as the potentiometers used. I suggest you search for spring/loadcell upgrade or a different pedal set. Mines are still in warranty and im thinking on selling the whole kit; get something like a fanatec Csl or mybe even sc sport

    I'm really glad that you went over the technique of using the throttle while braking. I learned about it from watching Ti-tech's replays back in the day and it helped me so much. I could get away with using some very aggressive brake balance settings because of it :p

    It's funny that you referenced Lewis Hamilton talking about his braking technnique. On the GT sport promo he did a few years ago he says he always brakes before cornering, alluding that he doesn't trail brake - but we all know he's hiding his actual technique. Oh Lewis....

      I doubt he trail brakes much in an F1 car with no ABS and no traction control. He'll rotate the car using throttle inputs...

    Iv started to rewatch this series as I’m struggling with going from a pad to a wheel. I’m on average 2 secs a lap slower on a wheel so hoping these will help bring that down or even improve my times 👍

    I've not long started playing GT Sport and my better half has bought me a T150 for Christmas. I have friends that have been playing this since it came out who keep getting 3,4 or even 5 seconds faster times than me on the daily races. The throttle while braking is a good technique specially for the top of Mount Panorama before coming down hill. Good way to keep the car straight. It saved me seconds on the lap.

    Great video. I never knew about that secret sauce accelerating while braking technique.
    Probably also worth mentioning you are (and everyone else is) running ABS on default so you can just brake 100% without thinking about it and it's better than turning it off

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers mate and yes you're right default ABS is normally the best :D!

    • @ImpalaRacer
      @ImpalaRacer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MonkeyMatt Racing thanks for pointing this out specifically. I just switched from weak to default and instantly dropped multiple tenths off my GR3 qualifying at Interlagos. Did end up moving my brake bias further towards as I found it easier to rotate the rear of the car on corner entry. Guess I wasn’t being smooth enough with the brakes with ABS on weak and was inducing some push while trail braking.

    Really appreciating this series and looking forward to the next one.
    One more aspect, related to braking came to my mind and maybe you will cover this in a later episode:
    What i found out, especially this week on Redbull Ring, is the difference it makes, whether you slam your brakes at the braking point, or if you apply braking in a more progressive manner. The latter lets you decelerate much much faster.
    Furthermore i feel, that if you don't apply 100% brakes in a straight line, but more like 80% it will take more load off the ABS and help decelerate even faster.
    I'm still working this out and don't have it 100% right, so maybe you could slightly cover this topic in another episode :)

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's kind of covered in this episode, I can kind of explain it. So with the last technique where you apply the throttle when braking you're essentially stopping oversteer while braking. If you go from 0 to 100% braking you have more chance of oversteer occurring which will be what is happening. Progressive braking settles the weight, but if you dab the throttle a tiny bit you can get more braking from 0 to 100 than trying to module perfectly 0 to 100. That's also where ABS comes in to try help as well, but it will be that I'm sure.

    Hey Tidgney, just watched your vids having heard Kie25 talk about it on one of his vids and it was ace. I went for 10 laps on brands daily race qualifying and went 4 tenths quicker without even really pushing! Thanks mate! Really well explained video and really helpful. One thing I would say is as a beginner, I've only been playing gt for 2 months I also found this braking method much more stable and crashed way less which has been a massive frustration. Might not occur to someone of your ability but would certainly be worth pointing out to us novices. Keep up the good work fella and will look forward to moving through the rest of this series in the coming months.

    I figured this out for myself back in FM3 days. Really helped when driving on a controller and is still helpful in Forza 7 now. Iv always referred to it as "Throttle Braking". I found it is useful if your a "steering tapper" like me. When you have all or nothing steering on a controller it helped keep the car a bit more balanced coming into a corner. It can throw you off however if you go to correct over-steer that isn't there, and when tapping the thumbstick that happens all too often. Never could get the hang of steady steering on a controller tho.
    Great video! really breaks it down. Would love to see one all the aspects of slipstream in GT Sport. Especially when it comes to braking in it and the effects it has on fuel and such. Think it could help a lot of newer sim/sim-cade racers out there.

    @Tidgney, thanks so much. After analyzing literally hours of video & replays trying to shave the last golden seconds off my laps, what I've found is it's not my top speed where I lose, it's my bottom speed in the corners. I am consistently 3-5mph slower through the middle of the turns. I'm working diligently to improve this. In the BoP races, it just seems I cannot hold the speed others do as I tend to lose the front wheel grip and was out.

    The bit about using the throttle while braking, very interesting. It's something I may want to learn.
    That is if I can actually be compent with trailbraking first. It's not so much not understanding the idea of it but for whatever reason, my results with it in GT Sport have gone backwards from my GT6 days. I might as well add here my theories in case it helps anyone else as they learn on their own:
    - The brake pedal itself: I use a G29 and I just don't like the feel of its brake pedal. There's sometimes a disconnect between the amount I believe I'm applying versus actual. My time with the TGT's brake pedal in Vegas was a struggle but I couldn't shake the feeling I thought my trailbraking was better when I did it right.
    - Rolling off the brake pedal: Related to the pedal itself. Common problem I have is not reducing braking pressure enough since the range I have is too small. I lose front grip and understeer off line.
    - GT Sport's ABS system: On occasion, I feel like it's doing something that affects braking effectiveness even if I'm using the same braking marker and force.
    - Engine Braking: I know you'll cover this later but I have a bad habit of being clumsy with my downshifts while braking.
    - Camera View: Right now, I'm using bumper cam. This is problematic in traffic when I literally can't see my braking points.
    Look forward to the rest of the videos!

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure you're better at trail braking than you think Outlaw as you've made some finals :D! Braking is the hardest part of GT Sport especially vs GT6, I know a few people who have struggled. I find braking to be the biggest time gainer in this game vs any other GT Game.

    Looking at the amount of time gained in one corner from trail braking, I'm assuming it's perfectly possible to gain between one, and two seconds a lap? Dependant on track, of course.
    I suddenly feel a bit better about my times, as I currently use the "100% brake, all the time" method.
    Because I suck at trail braking on the DS4.

    • @YappingGamerDad
      @YappingGamerDad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As I'm reading your comment......I'm realizing that my best setups and circuits, I'm always just 1 to 3 seconds away from top 10 leader board in global lap times.
      And I had the same epiphany as you. I was sure, the difference was because I use a controller when those people have wheel setups. So I just bought a G29 to try it out. I only have one night of practice with it and I clearly need weeks and months of practice.
      But hey, maybe I can try some extra trail braking to make up the time instead of the wheel. The wheel is fun but I'm no where near ready for online races.

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can do depending on the track. The way to look at it is with the old GT Academy times, day 1 everyone always said no-one will go quicker but as the finesse came in and trail braking got more precise for everyone the times tumbled down, down and down. It's one reason I say there's no such thing as a perfect lap as you can always get more precise and a slight bit quicker!

If you're struggling with anything or really want to improve if you're not A+ I would recommend doing the driving school and challenges and focus on beating friends first then trying to get as close to top 10 times. The thing is it may sound dull and boring but your finesse will increase, and with finesse will come improved lap times else where :)!

    I always knew about threshold braking and trail braking. I've never even heard about using throttle to straighten an over-steery car. Although I don't drive road cars that much, I've got to try that out!

    • @IDyn4m1CI
      @IDyn4m1CI 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some hardcore simracers go into these points in more detail, like Empty Box, because mastering these techniques can play a huge role on races in more hardcore sims. In GTSport the setups are fixed, and usually very safe, but when you're able to change the car setup, the setups that are faster are also usually harder to drive, and you have to use these techniques to extract all the potential out of them

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true, WFG is a good example as I believe the cars were super pointy in that to make the finals which is great for turn in but oversteer becomes a big thing!

      Haha, to be honest it will help in any racing game irrespective, mainly because any racing game applies similar techniques it's just how efficient each technique is vs the physics. So as Noxiuz said, if coasting is more effective, then potentially you may have to do that more.

    Thanks a lot! Well explained! I knew about trailbraking but in never heard about acceleration while braking to get the car more stable.
    But you still look for your apex speed? So you just try to brake later and still hit the same apex speed. So the approach is like, brake later, trail brake and sill get the same apex speed.

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't really look at apex speeds unless I'm at a point where I'm struggling to gain time and compete on the leaderboard, that then identifies any corner I may be having an initial problem with? But ye you're right generally speaking the later you can brake but still slow the car the better :D!

    Do you trail brake every corner or does it depend on the shape? Just asking as I love watching your vids and watching the throttle/brake levels and I notice some have very little trail braking. Also....do you ever start turn in with full brake applied?

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very dependant on corner, sometimes you'll only do it a tiny bit, other corners you potentially do it for a long period. You can initially turn if in with full braking, especially for hairpins as you can create the V type of corner, so braking at the start of V 100% get to the point huge turn then straight out

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We all use default. The main reason being ABS weak initially will be better but the minute the wheels lock up you then lose braking efficiency and it becomes worse. Without FFB in the pedals you'll never know if you're locking up or not.

      To be honest, it's very rare the first way works vs trail braking in any part of GT. I've always trail braked, but I talk about cornering in the next episode. This was just to demonstrate the difference between braking and why trail braking is so good.

    Thanks for all the videos, it's amazingly helpfull, i've been a GT fan since the first one and i discover that i can still learn how to be faster, closer from these "Aliens" ;)
    There something tho, i got the T-GT but i'm not a left foot braker, i wish i was cause sometimes i would like to trail brake just a tiny bit or just tap the brakes for a split second to settle the car, but the time to switch from one pedal to another makes the all thing not worth it.
    I've tried it but i feel so clumsy and not consistent, and also the playseat configuration doesn't help because the trunk is on the way between my left foot and the brake pedal so i wonder if it's a thing i should really consider going for and practice much more (i'm considering swapping the clutch and brake pedal to have the brake right under my left foot) because right now i can't do the throttle brake technique either!! ;)
    I'm also asking the question to you all wheel users, did you go straight for left foot braking?
    Thanks for your insights

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ye right foot braking isn't the best, although Akagi does do that, kinda of insane to watch to be honest with you! I went straight to left foot braking when I got a wheel.

    • @docbrown40fr45
      @docbrown40fr45 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Nervous Buddha yes that helps 😁
      Actualy after missing GTS for about a week i though this break would be a good opportunity to stick to it, and i think i can do it, but i don't really feel the resistance from the brake pedal anyway (no mod) so i might try the clutch one by swapping the connection inside... I did all my time trials in dailys today with left foot braking and i feel good about them so we'll see !

    Hi Tidgney, thanks for your videos. I have a question...actually two. You can't apply trailbranking while doing a chicane, can you? And also, while you're on a controller you can't brake and acelerate at the same time...at least I can't. Braking always overpowers the throttle while playing with DS4. Thank you looking forward to more videos.

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Pedro! You can apply it in a chicane, but of course it will be really reduced as you're steering a lot during it :). It really depends on your controls whether you can brake/accelerate. Personally yes you're right you can't with what I would use which is the sticks, but their are additional pad driving aids in the background which should help with oversteer issues :)!

  • @mohamedraafat5676
    @mohamedraafat5676 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey tidgney thank you so kuch for the series. One question i have is: am i supposed to try and trail brake in every corner than requires brakes? So you're saying standard braking is pointless? Thanks again man

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So in terms of trail braking, if you have to brake in a corner, then I would look to trail brake in the vast majority! This is because you want to maintain as much speed as possible (Extended the braking zone means longer at full throttle :D). The only time you wouldn't is if it compromises an exit to much.

    @TidgneyRacing Hey . I sometimes see some really fast guys braking for just a split second some point before a corner, then lift off the brake and down shift, then they go into the corner with just steering while engine rev is maximum.
    Those corners I mentioned are not necessarily fast ones.
    Is this a recommended strategy?

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That really depends on the corner, occasionally hitting the limiter can slow you down but it will also cause significant issues with car stability. I wouldn't recommend it as I believe you should always be doing something.

  • @ThomasSWK

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's so much that could go in to be fair :D! In terms of no ABS I think I'll pass that though, only because it's very much pedal dependant, and user dependant and you can change setup on pedals and stuff! We'll see about accelerating from 0 without TC though :D!

    What would be the best way to do trail braking using a pad?

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Racing on a pad can always be difficult. If you can move to the sticks that will help a lot. That is what I used when I used to play on the pad as it gives you that little more precision when braking.

    • @Bralph888
      @Bralph888 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey I got pretty fast with the pad trail braking, what I did was hit the left trigger 90% brake to begin then right away release to about 30 % and continuing to let off to about 10% at the apex or just before the apex then a brief moment to settle the car then gentle on the acceleration 15% to start and then 40% then 100%. Hope this helps

    Great video, can’t wait to apply this to my own driving. Never understood what it meant with trail braking. What I had been doing was the lightly using the brake from start to finish (not all the time, just trying to improve my time overall). Got varying results lol. Always been afraid of using brakes while turning.
    Look forward to the brake bias and steering tutorial now. Again another thing I dont fully understand.
    See with traction control I’ve real issues exiting corners when using 0 without spinning. Would trailing braking help more with that? I usually have 2 for traction control.
    Just wish I could drive manual as I’m hopeless at that anytime I’ve tried. Been automatic my whole life with racing games. Wish I’d sorted that out a lifetime ago 😂
    Again thanks for this great video 👍

    • @tidgney
      @tidgney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brake Bias is interesting for cornering and it will help a little with your exit of corners. My latest episode acceleration will certainly help when exiting corners and also explain what may be happening. Trail braking may actually worsen the effect if not done right, but it will help if you do it right. So if not done right the weight will move more significantly and that means corner exit is affected.
      Try and go to Automatic if you can though, as it will be a really benefit to you, and really improve the immersion!
