Samedan airport is located in the Swiss Alps. Hence, it is surrounded by high mountains. It is in close proximity of St Moritz. A place for the rich and famous. People go there during the winter season to relax and enjoy the views. And of course there are plenty of ski slopes all around. The approach into Samedan is challenging because of a number of reasons. The elevation of the terrain is a lot higher than average (5.600 feet) and it is surrounded by rough terrain. Weather conditions can be tricky and there is no instrument approach available. There is also a lot of glider and skydiving activity to take into consideration.

What a beautiful and evocative video. Majestic, dreamy. The Earth is amazing. And so is aviation. Bravo on what you captured and composed on this one. P.S. the skiiers on the left capped it off. Human life and land use juxtaposed with millions of years of mountain formation, planetscape. Yes, definitely, Bravo.

Love the approach. In Switzerland during flight training we are going there for the "Nusstorte" :) It really can be a challenge flying there with a SEP during hot summer days.
I love this approach, especially in the evening after tower closure - time to feel a bit bigger in a tiny glider with 2km runway - much better than the 100m stripe beside - the difficulty for the gilider, using the full length of the runway and not touch down too early :-)

Thanks for sharing. I've flown into Engadin/Samedan a few times, though the approach I've experienced from this end of the valley followed the valley floor, with a late turn in over the gap in the small hillock before the runway. The approach from the eastern end of the valley is far scarier, especially from the north, as you don't see the opening to the valley until you're almost flying past it, and at that stage you are well below the peaks directly ahead and there's just a curtain of rock in front. The bank to turn into the valley is also very severe from that direction. Also the take off up the valley is quite scary, as the valley floor rises up and you have those steep foothills directly ahead immediately after wheels up and then you're heading straight towards a wall of rock. The turn north is also only visible at the last minute and from the passengers perspective, you're looking down at the mountain tops from what feels like only a couple of hundred feet. Not much room for error, either way.

Absolutely cool location. I had been there before the rule became active to get specific certification (VFR only). Now, many Years later I've got my certification and been there by RNP approach and departure, both of which are quite challenging, at least in a single engine airplane to adhere to the required climb gradient. Of course your video is much more spectacular.

Haha. If you read the NOTAW to that Airport, you will see that short of RWY 21, the Swiss military is regularly training anti aircraft shooting :-) I was one of them. Big guns... Then again, I found it to be the most beautiful VFR approach I ever flew. Try it in a Diamond, you pretty soon realize that not only are there very high mountains around you but with 5600 ft AMSL its the highest Airport in Europe and your propeller engine somehow slowly starts coughing. Easy turns to base and final. Your aircraft does not have the performance there to get you out of a stall and the mountains require you to use every inch of space you have to make those turns (for extra thrill, do it during summer...). I guess everyone learning to fly in Switzerland needs to do that approach at least once (flying through the Alps being one requirement for your license...). Its challenging, but great when you do it :-)))

I grew up in Montana and learned to fly in a Cessna 172 and 182 off of a grass and gravel strip just north of Yellowstone Park (MT48). Seeing the mountains in this video reminded me of that, when you get up over the Rockies in the winter time it is so beautiful and serene.
It did put a bit of a knot in my stomach thinking about flying a jet that low just because of the speed involved, not sure what the stall speed on it is, but it's probably close to the cruising speed of the old Cessna I would fly.
Can you dirty a jet like that up and put it into cross control? Or do you just have to ride in on the glide slope and shoot the approach?

Question please. It seems to me, on a VFR day, a pilot could slip into the valley on the left of the approach, seen on the video, and then, one mile out, make a slight left turn to final - all to avoid flying over the high hills that were flown over on final, in the video. Of course, the video itself does not tell the whole story. Thanks.
All valleys other than the chosen are much steeper. Its very unique there, one straight long valley and only mountains besides.

Yes they do , the biggest are 737-200 and the A319. But no scheduled passenger flights, these are all private jets.
