One of the main downsides about Charlie is that he has a hard time dealing with change whenever he becomes way too used to certain things. That's what his mom said to Bombay in the first movie when they went out on a date to the winter festival.

I think Charlie was dealing with hurt from Bombay leaving him. Of all the Ducks Charlie was closest to Bombay in a father son way. Him leaving angered and hurt Charlie which led him to what he did. Not excusing it but that explains it
