The Reality Of Surfing Uluwatu, Bali
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 ก.ย. 2024
- Uluwatu has been a crowded wave for over 20 years, but since the post-covid explosion things seem to be worse than ever. There were some farcical moments during yesterday's afternoon session with multiple surfers on waves at the same time, and a complete disregard of safety and etiquette from many in the lineup. Although this made for some entertaining viewing up on the cliff, we have to wonder how much fun most of the surfers are really having out there...
Although it was chaotic, there were still some really nice waves ridden during the session, and some of the best conditions we've seen at Uluwatu in a while.

i only surfed there a couple of times, back in 1988. the evening session was epic with 3 or 4 out,. My board was too short. after I went to Gland, never surfed uluwatu again. when i returned to Bali in 92, 2002. it was a shock and didn't spend much time there other than to catch a plane somewhere else. 2005 to 2010 just a stop on the way to other spots. last trip was 2018. the newest version of the airport turned my stomach. went to another island and surfed for a week by my self, no other surfers around. That was the last one for me............body has said "no more" . Bali, Gland were high points of a 50 + year run of riding waves.
Gland the best in Indo? Deserts & Mentawais look great
@@jimihendrixx11 no more , pay much money for mentawai anda you find 3 full boats on line up
88 would have been an awesome time to surf the Bukit.
I would hate to think what the crowd must be like at Bingin 6 guys. On the take-off spot is crowded
It's not over-crowded, it's under-principled
crowded AF too
The disrespect of a few inconsiderate surfers thinking they can have a wave all to themselves without sharing the ride is mind blowing
Those aren't the disrespectful ones?? It's the guys dropping in
Ulus is crowded and competitive but 9 out of 10 waves do not involve a drop in so this video is making it look worse.
However, at a spot like Ulus, if the only way you can catch a wave is if your boyfriend or a surf guide has to push you in, you should go learn somewhere else.
And if you are unable or unaware to look behind you while paddling for a wave, you should also go learn somewhere else.
I just recently spent the month of June in Bali - I cannot recommend it to anybody. Traffic is insane, the surf is crowded and the surfers are reckless.
Outside of the surf, you are treated as an ATM with legs everywhere you go. Its pretty insane.
True there is so much beauty and all.. but man, the congestion in every sense is real.
I moved from the rat race Sth Bali 2 years ago. Built my first house in Brawa 2003..2-3 people max on the beach. Now l live in Nth Bali, lucky if l see 1 tourist a month..only speak Indo at home. Wouldn't live in the South again.
where in Bali were you? I was in Canggu in 2018 was pretty nice in Aug not that many surfers. But im a beginner so not sure how it is other places
the russians need to be deported immediately.
I was in Bali last October. Never again. I am a Sydney surfer who grew up with crowds. But the constant near every wave drop-ins (I sit deep, I know what I am doing, sometimes it can be a shock to people I am on the wave from inside, but mostly its deliberate/uncaring) became so incredibly frustrating, I gave up. Seemed to be a lot of Spanish/Portuguese speaking surfers responsible. Not to mention snaking groms on mega-short boards, who are out of control with no line-up regulators like back home in Australia. In amongst all that are just plain old kooks who can't look right and paddle.
Thats It. I from Canary Islands ..and im 50 years...only Will surf 40 minutes en peace but its imposible, over all people drop ins, no respect, nobody wait his turn...its crazy ...after 30 minutes im fed Up and have to calle peoples attention...Bali IS like far west
Most likely Brazilians. They have a serious attitude problem in every sport.
Yeah. I used to believe Bali would be a place Id like to live long term when I retire. I'm not so sure anymore. Sad. Are all spots like this?
@@helloitsmehb yes, 90% are full
if they flailed with a herky jerky style most likely Brazzos.
Give me an uncrowded beach break in South Oz any day.
Or a good old west Au slab
@@SurfingwithHaze or a sunny winters day at a South Coast NSW reef.
Or a flat grey mushy wave Christchurch NZ!
Goodbye Bali! Not Island of Gods anymore but Business Industry taken over😢
nobody cares your opinion, just go and never return to Bali. Bali does not need you, either
20 years ago I had a guy paddle over the back of my legs to snake me on to a wave. How his fins did not cut me I dont know, He still maintained he had done nothing wrong, its been a shit show since the 90's
Yah, agreed. I gave Ulu another go earlier this month. As it was small, everyone was happy to drop in on everyone else. There were plenty of waves to go around too, if everyone just chilled a bit. I dunno, maybe I’m getting too old.
50yrs ago Bali only 2 surfer on the beach of uluwatu, I was surprised that time with Bule and never seen person on with wooden board riding the wave. Bali a lot of good wave not just uluwatu. Even all the islands with beautiful wave you have to travel around for surfing. Good luck enjoy surfing not complaining.
Then go to Lombok
A bit of size allways thins out the crowds and egos everywhere
This why I stopped going to Bali years ago and started going to Sumatra
I usually go first light, still quiet before 6:45am, I guess. 😅
Surfed ulus for a few days at the end of May and it was so frustratingly crowded. Only fun super early in the morning before the masses arrive.
Been that way for 25 years😂
Back in mmmmmmyyyyyyy day...
Sounds like you’re one of the shoulder hopping kooks for sure
I feel like early mornings and also looking further than ulu (Padang, nyang...) can guarantee you to catch some peaceful sesh. Arvos are always crowded wherever u go
I was traveling to bali 20 years ago, even paddling throught he cave at first light you might get 30 mins with 10 out then in an hour its 50+, you are lucky if you find a quiet window with respectful surfer there ever!
@@krusher74correct, it's been like that there for longer...except for remote/ secret spots..it's the same everywhere..l spend more time now on my mountain bike ..anytime, any day..no stress
Ive never surfed it and i dont think i want to either, seeing those burns make me feel so aggravated.
Do any surfers go to Bali to help with the trash problem!? Or just come to and add to the traffic and trash problem...
Feel sorry for the locals who are stuck with this and can't go to another country.
Locals have no trouble getting waves and do a lot of drop ins too.
paaaarty wave! man that opening shot is fucking hilarious dude
hahaha 😅
6:04 lol...
man that was crazy. That place should be more strict with kooks. There are many waves non experienced surfers can go to... canggu, batu balong, impossibles, balangan.... Uluwatu is not a wave to mess around with, the power of the wave and the reef can cause some real damage, and with fins hitting you is double the injury
yea was thinking the same, finchop is not fun. Canggu was pretty nice for beginners like myself
Now, Glad to have surfed there since late 70's. Have fun! Get😊😊 to other spots!
no need to travel 1,000's of miles for that. I have that in my backyard at Lowers.
what happened to people paddling really wide back out so they don't impact on the person riding the wave...
Careful kids. Ngoerah Hospital is not where you want to be on vacation.
Nogerah??
It's the entire island, not just uluwatu..... there are other places to go without the crowds. Not worth the airfare & it's not that cheap anymore.
Agreed. I've been there twice . Caught about 2 decent waves i think the entire trip . Every wave is surfed that comes through that island from dusk till dawn . I found it frustrating .
What an absolute nightmare...
I'd just rather not go there anymore. To be fair it looks like a good medium to small day so a crowd would be expected. I'm just lucky to have great memories from the 80s and 90s
Oldmatey at 6.10😂l tried to push of karate waving arms man😂..
My name is bocce. From lombok. Ekas surf..
Not only uluwato many spots 2crowdy with a lot of peoples who don t know the rules and respect.
same guy first few waves
its only like this when its small
Been to Bali twice as an average surfer i had absolutely no chance LOL Wouldn't go back unless i was gonna head straight to Lombok or something ?? I bet thats crowded now as well though ? I'd rather my waves back home where i haven't had to spend a fortune to get there and have my own car to easily get about with my boards :) Surf trips are always a dissapointment it would seem . Crowds , costs , hassle .
Lombok is just as crowded as Bali now. Only difference is the waves aren't as good and the surfers aren't as good...
🏝️🌊Paradise lost again 🙄
I was in El Salvador en may.... supercrowded imposible to surf, 30 brasileans per surfspot
Thank you for no music...nature should all ways be the soundtrack!
OMFG - Just coming back from the Ments and it's no better there!
FFS...
Has it all gone to shit post COVID?
War in Ukraine seems to be a big reason for things going to shit in Bali. off and on land
@@martijnandriessen8073 how does Ukraine have anything to do with crowded surf in Bali?
It's more than that I'm sure.
I tend to see this as a cultural shift.
Generational.
Gen Z...
Last one before Armageddon right?
@@xisotopex loads of Russians coming to Bali to escape the war. I take it you havent been to Bali recently.
@@martijnandriessen8073 oh they are everywhere they can get to, but not so much crowding in the water.... leave that to the brazzos and the aussies, and the Israelis, the seppos and of course the local hot shots...
ive never been there! I would love to go but, what you guys think is Bali overrated??
I surfed ulu for 10 years now i don t go anymore, 95% of bali spots are the same now
the island has been destroyed by rivers of money, and the surfing has been wasted by ton of unidisciplined and disrespecting people from all over the globe. love uluwatu but hate ovecrowd. no more for me ...
The reason I will never go to Bali! You can have it!
Kooks like small waves
Crowded for the last 20 years? Don't kid yourself. It's been crowded since 1977.
I was for 20 years in Uluwatu, was nice, ok... no business, only some locals, 15-20 surfers,, return 2007 was not more so good but...mmmm ok, and in 2016 was horrible.
Much happier in my 5mm wetsuit surfing better waves than that with only a few out ☺️
Idk what all complaints are all about. You can hardly call it crowded
nothing is more annoying than looking at a wave you watch to catch, and than realizing that someone is already in it
really? it's more annoying than catching a wave and then watching a guy make eye contact with you right before he blatantly drops in on you then collides with the guy who dropped in on him - completely fucking up the wave for you when you clearly could have made the section?
When it's half a foot, you should expect it.
Looks like Malibitis has hit Uluwatu
Is that a typical day? Looks stressful
It's whenever it is on. Until it gets big enough to scare people, but then it's scary!
@@Noticeofintentto great - looking forward to when its gnarly big😊
Hi there, where is this beach located? is it padang padang beach?
No, it's Uluwatu 👍
You mean uluwatu beach?
@@chanchikitjustin1610 No, he meant Uluwatu forest. It's a rain forest in the middle of the island of Java. It's known for its cows. They're called cash cows. The most famous of them goes by the name of Milky-White.
Is this uluwatu or dreamland? im a bit confused... trying to workout where best to surf at my level (beggienr-inetrmediate and like 2-4 foot waves (max5)) surfing Bali in november...any tips welcome
I have been on a surf trip here for about 2 months. I'd recommend Dreamland, can get some good size there but its a pretty gentle wave that rolls through and its mostly a sand bottom so you don't have to stress if you do come off! Vibe is a bit more relaxed there in my opinion. Other options are Padang Padang which can be fun. Or Batu Balong in Canggu but I must say that its always a big crowd there due to a lot of surf schools being on the beach
THANKS!
@@bradleygreen8166
Why would you think it might be Dreamland? The video clearly says Uluwatu.
That’s the real zoo mate 😅
🤣👍
All this guys need a crew of BALI’S BLACK SHORT against their disrespect
I would prefer to surf in Italy in our secret spot with three surfers in the water
with four foot waves that this. and I said it all
Kook city, no thanks. This video will make it less crowded again. Ha
infinite kooks
yuk everything
It's time to limit the number of tourists from each country... too many ozzies coming to indo. It's going to crash the tourism...
I see only a lack of respect 🤨 but there are others spots in Indonesia with more surf spirit as Lombok.
Put 3 feet and the blowins get blown In 😆
That is insane. Worse than surfing lower trestles
If it's with your buddies and some yells party wave then yes super fun. If it's a bunch of kooks, then it blows
Wave market 😂
pfff....
Loads of ozzie who think they are local similar to canngu
you spelt Brazilian wrong
Whilst some ozzies and Americans hassle a bit, the worst by far are the Brazilians. They're the ones who turn up for one season and then think they're locals and own the place. I watch them drop in on everyone everyday. Then flip them off if they call them off the wave and continue surfing.
Goofy footer who dropped in on the guy in the white shirt on the first wave is the worst. Funniest thing is he can't even surf. Total kook.
RIP
😭😭😭💔💔💔🤍🤍🤍😭😭😭
We’ve great waves all around Australia . I wouldn’t bother going back to Bali. It was a cheap holiday in the 80’s & 90’s. A culture which was lost to the tourist dollar and a community wanting to get in to your wallet .
Fuck that
BRO HEY SORRY BRO DIDN'T SEE YA BRO🤡
Gerry should have kept his mouth shut
holy shit that aint cool wtf i blame the camera you tubers.. bringing in the kooks...place is ruined
reality is only 5% of them can really surf :D
And only 1% of those have any style.
All cake lighties! WSL wanabies 😂
what happens when foreign investors are allowed to run your country.
The bali locals ‘ coaching’ the kooks in the line up who shouldn’t even be out there. Calling them into waves, high fives after every straight hander and encouraging them to drop in on anyone.
It’s such a cringe. Great the local boys are making money from the industry but I don’t know how they look at themselves in the mirror. It’s embarrassing.
Yup, schools should just be prohibited at Uluwatu, period.
The kook show🤡
just wake up early
Doesn't help.
bali. bye bye. a total zoo in every way unless you want to party then its perfect------surfing is a very sorry state. worldwide --------overcrowded. overly popular dog eat dog. good luck folks. I quit for the most part. 5 years. ago-----I miss it. a lot but the world is wacko and sometimes you just have to walk away
Cold water is where you'll get waves to yaself . I soul surfred in Scotland for years and it gets great waves .
A sad reality.kooks everywhere that are not experienced enough to be out there.constand drop ins at a shallow coral reef break.says it all.
Bahh it's getting crazy to surf out there 🥲🥲
Thats nothing compared to what the Gouverneur of Bali is planning to do with the beach breaks from Kuta until Canggu. They're planning to build kinda toll road or railway on pillars partly over sand and ocean, from airport until canggu. They wanna begin until 25. I just read it yesterday.
Bali is the Disneyland for surfers, everything is there at your fingertips. Incredible food, accessible surf breaks, dance music pulsates while you surf, photographers capturing your perfect ride, cheap or luxurious accommodation. Friendly locals. Grab a ticket, join the line, enjoy the ride, if that's your thing.
