  • The first movement of this sonata opens in C major passing beautiful melodic lines between cello and piano. As the music progresses further we hear different modal implications all presented at a very quiet dynamic level. The overall feeling of the piece as a whole and in particular the first and third movements is one of pastoral complacency. The piece was written at a time when Koechlin was seeking rufuge from the war and perhaps he wrote in this way to find inner peace. This piece and his viola sonata both share these similar qualities of calm introspection.
