The paladin being an overpowered NPC plotrailing the party was the most realistic part of the movie
Hard disagree. The opening was even more in line with the average D&D game

Him walking over the Boulder instead of around and them watching him to see what he did is the most NPC thing and makes total sense now. He is so NPC like that it is genuinely funny.
While shooting he wasn't told when to stop walking, and he didn't hear them yell cut, so he just went ahead and they decided to keep it ^^

The Jarnathan joke will always make me chuckle. They literally get pardoned but somehow screw it up.
It's like they rolled for persuasion, got a low result and decided to go with their absolute bonkers plan... Without letting the DM tell them they actually made it 😂 it's great
Honestly it was one of those jokes you see coming a mile away, but is still done well enough that it makes you laugh
They rolled an 11 for a dc 10 check and assumed they failed and start hi-jinks before the dm could get a word in lol.
Plus the callback at the end. Past the end. Whatever.
To be fair, the ending made the joke worth it EVEN MORE! 😂
that owlbear smashing her into the ground at the end had me laughing in the theater not going to lie.

The staff of hither thither is absolutely something that the DM shoehorned in because the players messed up the puzzle, but in the moment he didn't consider the long-term consequences of handing them such an OP item, and the players proceeded to abuse the crap out of it for the rest of the campaign

I really liked when they were fighting the red wizard woman:
A) The entire party was surrounding the single boss enemy and all attacking her.
B) The party sorcerer fucking missed a spell against a stationary foe at point-blank range.
"The only one without any character development because she's too busy getting sh*t done" is the most d&d thing I've ever heard
Someone in the party has to take the game seriously...
So true in my current campaign. I feel kind of bad leaving one friend to actually take things seriously while the rest of us are goofing off

I'm currently playing a lawful paladin, and my friend is playing an absolute chaos goblin of a rogue.... literally, a goblin 😂 The exasperation my character has constantly at the amount of random, pointless theft that goblin commits could fill an entire cloud with sighs. Which is appropriate, since he's an air genasi 😂
In fairness paladins are a charisma class.
Because they based him on the Old Spice Man
They confuse Lawful with "Obeying the Law" when it actually means something more like "order" (which is what it was called in the original source material, Michael Moorcock's "Elric" saga.)
@@IceMetalPunk I've always had a hard time playing a Paladin. Just doesn't fit my playing style well. However, one exception was a Goblin Paladin of Moradin who sought to free the goblins from their tyrannical god...I call him Moses because "let my people go" was too stupid a gag and I couldn't resist.
The whole movie felt like they watched a group playing D&D, then made a movie out of that. Which was exactly why I enjoyed it so much.
Fun fact, the cast played D&D prior to filming for the movie. No joke. They did.

This movie is so perfectly DnD in its spirit and story that I’m convinced the writing team literally just played DnD and wrote the movie that way
the cast did play dnd before filming actually, one of the people from wotc was their dm
The reason why I enjoyed it so much is that I had so many moments watching the movie where it was like. "Alright the DM gave them that cause they were stuck" "And you just rolled a fucking 1" "OOO CRIT" lmfao it felt like we were watching a group play a D&D campaign, kind of half expected the movie to end with just the actors in real life sitting around a table.
Me and my partner wanted Vin Diesel to be the secret revealed DM wish kinda a Riddick type of vibe to him. Mean he love D&D and him and Michelle were in the Fast and Furious movies together. It would have been perfect.
Also we thought about exactly how we wanted each character to look. Some were the exact opposite of their characters. Some in like Halloween store cosplay. One in a full custom cosplay. Another just in their normal clothes. Last one be a completely different gender.
@@arriannaniv Oh totally, there's several famous D&D enthusiasts that would have loved to have been in that movie I'm sure, but they have a budget so we can't get em all. And totally, if this was a true campaign then you know, there's at least one dude sitting at the table that's perfectly masculine and is...playing an elf girl for some reason. (Not that I can' say anything, my current PC is a male satyr)

This would have rivaled that short "shwarma" Or Schwarma scene from Avengers. Tony Stark made a casual mention of a restaurant, and lo and behold, they all try it.

I love the idea that this is an actual D&D session. Doric is total munchkin, Xenk is an NPC, Edgin is the guy who REALLY likes to RP
Simon is the shy player that the DM has to actively push to do something, Holga is the player that ALWAYS plays the same class.

Too many funny moments to pick a favorite; but the Druid escape from the castle scene was the best action piece in recent memory.
Wasn't she a Tiefling raised by Druids?
@@tammiegriffin5569 Druid is a class, tiefling is bloodline/race. She is a tiefling raised by wood elves who was taught how to be a druid.
The druid escape and the final boss battle for me. They were both so well done.

Financially it only made about 50 million if you subtract the production cost.
I suspect it will gather a cult following in time but still, it was plain stupid to release it at the time they did. It likely cost them a few millions and I'm not sure Hasbo is smart enough to realise it was their fault.
Hell they're doing it again with Transformers in June...
It's surprisingly a good movie, and if they ever want to make a second movie they don't have to use the same characters, they can do a completely different story

Unfortunately given the film's box office performance, a sequel ain't happening. D&DHAT needed to turn in WAY bigger numbers than it did--at least double the take it actually pulled.
I've always thought the "Red Wizards of Thay are going to take over Neverwinter" was the big plot stated at the beginning by the DM, but the players are like "yeah yeah yeah, now lets go rescue my daughter". So in the end they complete the quest they set out for, daughter rescued, on the boat, sailing away. Then the DM is like "Sky tentacles of death gonna turn everyone into zombies, remember that from an exposition 12 sessions ago?"
Players look at each other "Fine, lets go stop the red wizards"
That is how a session can go.

There's so much in this movie that, if you look at it through that lens of "wait, what if this were an actual DnD game", a lot of moments really pop out like that and I'm certain it was intentional considering the creators were themselves DnD players/fans.
@@Lucifronz I mean, that's what makes it work, isn't it? When the makers are genuine fans. If the driving force is accountants, you get the Borderlands movie. If the driving force is fans who are the creators who somehow manage to talk the studio into actually letting them do it correctly, you get stuff like this.

Everytime the Druid was on screen, she was amazing and literally has the best action scene.
The Owlbear fights were awesome but the pursuit in the castle was incredible.

to be fair, while the movie is great, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast did some REALLY shitty things recently that lost them alot of customers.

Because while it appeals greatly to DnD fans, the adventure comedy has been soured in the mainstream audiences mind by over saturation.
When the film is criticized for “putting the MCU into Lord of the Rings” you know that it’s lost the casual audience
I'm really sad it didn't do that well in box office. This movie deserves so much more and I think I can speak for the whole D&D community, we need a sequel.
We need a sequel with the same actors playing different characters. Michelle Rodriguez playing a Bard would be hilarious.

I'd love for the sequel to be an entirely new cast of characters set somewhere else in Faerun considering this one was mostly centralized on the northwest coast of the continent. Maybe 1 or 2 cameos of this party, but they're older and more sedentary since it's been 20-30 years since their adventuring days

It would have to have been a game with some _very_ special house rules. In the actual game, to have the effectively unlimited number of wildshape changes Doric did, she'd have to be level 20 - the maximum.
It would be bonkers of none of them was familiar with D&D. It's 2023, RPGs, even the TT ones, aren't scecret super-nerd territory any more.

I love that Freaks And Geeks basically led to the creation of this movie (John Francis Daley's character played D&D in the show, which led to him falling in love with it IRL, eventually leading to him co--writing/directing this)
I knew I would probably enjoy the movie when it came out. What I didn't expect was how funny it would actually be. The graveyard scene nearly killed me.
I love the way it played out exactly like a real campaign with idiots and unlucky dice. The nat 1 "AI art" had me rolling

The illusionary bard scene had me rolling on the floor
And the comedy is handled really well. Tons of funny moments without becoming a parody.
so agreed.. we went in expecting a bit of fun, hopefully some laughs.. not really expecting much other then a fun popcorn movie... was so much better then we had expected. was so much fun and really entertaining... yes, a lot of it was "predictable" (because, well, only so many ways a D&D campaign can go and still be a "fun" movie..) but it was so fun watching them get there
That thumbnail scene was the funniest scene! The whole theater was crying with laughter. It was the most awesome theater going experience in a long time. Such a good and fun movie!

I have never played D&D, but I saw this in theaters, and it was amazing. I absolutely loved it. One of the best movies of 2023, so far.

And that's a part of what has made it a good movie. It's fun regardless of if you're familiar with the source material.
Highly recommend trying out the game if you get the chance. They captured the vibe of most campaigns in the movie really well.
This film is literally just a D&D session made into a film. Because of that I didn't think it was that good. But now when someone new to D&D and/or tabletop roleplaying asks me what it is, I don't have to try and explain it at all. I can just tell them to watch Honor Among Thieves. :)
I was surprised at how much heart and humor this movie had. At the end I had laughed, cried and was awed at some of the action scenes & scenery. Love it to bits.

I'm so proud of myself. I just realized that the team that gets to the cage before the main characters of this movie are the characters from the animated series.

I watched this movie expecting...well expecting another DnD movie. I came out the other side realizing they actually cared about the movie and the community. We need more of this for sure.

I went in expecting nothing and came out with a new favourite movie. The fact that it was just fun (and wasn't trying to be GoT 2.0, take 72) earned it a special spot in the line-up.

One thing I love about this movie is that you can name nearly every spell they used directly from the dnd spell lists. The ones I caught are (minor spoilers, unsurprisingly):
Fog cloud, prestidigitation, mage hand, time stop, speak with dead, imprisonment, arcane hand, animate object, meteor swarm, magic missile, minor illusion, anti-magic field (via the helm), firebolt, finger of death, counterspell, armour of agathys (guessing that for the tea finger thing), true resurrection (tablet), green flame blade, holy weapon, I’m going to assume beckoning death was an empowered combination of cloudkill and raise dead, disguise self (may actually be alter self, hard to tell here), invisibility, possibly calm emotions, chain lightning, and misty step.
I thought the tea thing was chill touch

The reason this movie works so well, where like Marvel doesn’t, is because (I’d say) it’s so authentic to an actual D&D game/campaign.
The bathos comedy, it feels natural because it’s so authentic to an actual game/session of D&D
whereas Marvel tries to force every movie to be a comedy when, no the characters don't all work that way and the plot doesn't always call for it.
Such an enjoyable movie, wasn't surprised to read that influences included Princess Bride and Monty Python. Really fun and funny, great characters and brilliant lines, and didn't feel like it was just copying something else, or following a formula, but did its own thing.
"Bad dragon! Google it while you're at work!" I actually laughed out loud.

I think it’s because they made fun of how super cliché paladins can be.
The opening gag where they are waiting for someone before they can progress the plot was brilliant and I know almost nothing about DnD.
This is the first movie I’ve seen in a while where I actually want a sequel.
So happy they brought up Game Night. Such a brilliant comedy film from the same team.
I loved that the big dragon sequence in this movie was freaking THEMBERCHAUD...and they still made him dangerous...
He's my favorite thing in the Out Of The Abyss campaign.
I saw the movie with a friend I always play DnD with, and I genuinely didn't expect it to be this good. We had an absolute blast.

A combination of lousy actors and the DnD name specifically. I mean, come on, DnD? Chris Pine? Michelle Rodriguez? It didn't do well because it simply wasn't good enough for people to want to watch.
I love that Michelle just embraced her image. She's so good at it and it's perfect for a frigging barbarian.

My husband and I (both D&D nuts) sat there the entire time going, "Okay, that's XYZ spell, pretty sure that's ninth level...Hm, I'm not sure how the Druid turned into an Owlbear, because Wildshape doesn't work like that, but it's enjoyable anyway...Oh! It's exactly the sort of random weird thing that would happen playing DnD. It's ridiculous and hilarious but at the same time, actually serious and needs dealing with.
Humanity did this movie dirty. Should have been so much more successful.

I loved this movie. My wife loved this movie. My 8 year old daughter loved this movie. That should tell you everything you need to know. Just a damn good time for no purpose other than to be just a damn good time.
I'm glad they reshot this movie. The initial trailer made it look like a soul-less cash in where a random group of people need to save the world. They fortunately pulled things back and gave the movie the charm it really needed. It had comedy, heart, and was overall a good time.
This movie was an unexpected treat! Need more movies like this!

But they missed the golden opportunity to say, “The most unrealistic part was how one character disappeared for a bit without explanation or they stopped midway through and had to reschedule.”
It truly represented a good D&D game, from the snarky characters, shallow plots, and silly cliched backstories. And damn if I didn't love it for that.

Honestly when I looked at the character all I saw was one guy in my roleplay group who is literally only there for battle scenarios then checks out for the rest of the session
Lol my DnD group was the entire writing club at my college. If we started doing dumb things, the GM would just roll with it until the next school year where we'd start a new campaign with the freshmen.
I usually have NPCs come in and say "Hey, I needyour help." Players get the hint quickly.
In my group we have had a lot of people come and go do to scheduling issues. One guy got a job at the game store we meet at. That’s how I viewed the paladin.
I DM and I HEARTILY cosign on this line. Incredibly funny and I'm still laughing at it b/c I have SEVERAL of these NPCs for my knuckleheaded party.
It is kind of an enigma nowadays isn't it. Just a good movie with a well thought out story and good humor
This movie is action-packed, funny, and wholesome. Great CGI, too. I wish it was a tv series, because I need more, alot more. Hopefully more d&d movies in the future, or at least a sequel.
I live action dnd series would do very well. Kinda surprised Netflix hasn't done one yet
Vox Machina is a D&D series. My non D&D playing wife, said the movie reminded her of the series. Our son and I just said "Yes!"
One of the many things that I loved about this movie was the occasions where you can really spot them making rolls for checks, saving throws and even when the players lose concentration.
For example:
- Doric makes a perception check to point Simon where to put the hither thither portal during a chase scene.
- Edgin failing roll after roll of sleight of hand/strength checks to remove his restrains
- Simon losing concentration of his major image of Edgin during the illusion distraction scene.
- Simon making stealth/sleight of hand roll (not sure if he has arcane trickster) when using mage hand (I've forgotten what makes M.H. invisible) when stealing from people during his performance, using presdigitation to make the air smell of 'Fresh Cut Grass'
And so, so much more.
Edgin also was the only one who failed his history check when they were talking with the dead soldiers about Xenk. He’s the only one who didn’t have a clue who he was.
Also, when questioning the skeletons, the “five questions, right?” was probably directed at the DM or the other player but the DM answered it and just rolled with it.

Absolutely loved to watch this movie, and I'm glad it came out alright. Super confused and disappointed to see that it was only in my local theaters for about 3 weeks though, before all the posters got taken down and it was only sent once a day

Went to watch this opening weekend to a rather surprisingly full theatre and believe me when I tell you there was barely a quiet moment throughout the entirety of the film's run time!! 🤣🤣🤣
And I was surprised to see it so full because in my country, Hollywood pretty much means either superhero films and/or fast-paced action films. Everyone of them had shown up for "That Chris Pine film with dragons" lol.
Watched this yesterday. I was so surprised by how good it is! Specially the action sequences. The part where the Druid gets chased around by the palace guards was a single take. Mostly CGI, but still!

It struck a pretty good balance, not relying on game references but the ones it did use were also ones that someone who isn't invested into the game would get.
It was also just a fun movie which is all you can really ask for.
Actually hope there isn't a sequel since it'll probably suck because somehow they'll forget all the things that made this one work.
Laugh, it was so chaulk full of game and Forgotten Realms references!.. In a good way mind you.
It's like, everyone could enjoy the movie... But if you knew DnD stuff and Forgotten Realms lore it was like heaven.

What I think is one of the strongest arguments in favor of this film if you haven't seen it yet is the variety of answers you'll get if you ask people what their favorite scene or bit was. I haven't seen anyone else here mention the whole "Speak with Dead" sequence. Other answers include Edgin narrating his tragic backstory, the illusory Edgin glitching, Themberchonk, any of the action scenes, and more.

Hasbro is losing money because they own Wizards of the Coast (Magic The Gathering) and D&D and have made some poor financial choices recently with both companies. They backed down on it, but they had planned to basically kill all homebrew D&D stuff and literally pushed a ton of people to the competitor, Pathfinder, and have relied heavily on Magic to bring up the loss in revenue and now the quality there is slipping and the price growing. Not the best financial choices, but god-damn did this movie exceed my expectations of it! Hopefully it can help steer them back on track.
A great honest trailer! - This film was fabulous, it had the heart and soul of D&D and at the end you felt like you had just come away from a fun and entertaining D&D session - praise indeed!
I was crying from laughing so hard at the part with Chris Pine & his lute.
The Game Night segment was so accurate. I recommend it every chance I get.

A surprisingly good flick, my only real complaint was they just kinda walked through all the dope fantastical locations instead of letting us soak in the atmosphere and whimsy.
Almost like the players didn't appreciate the DM's worldbuilding...
